Hello All.

The announcement of 4th Edition is a pretty big event for all RPG fans. It's a huge event for all of us at Wizards of the Coast, including WotC staff and our WizO support team. We understand that this is something many of you are going to feel very passionate about in a number of ways.

We've created this forum for few reasons. We want everyone to have a single discussion forum where they can get answers and information directly from the D&D staff. We also want to prevent the other forums from being overwhelmed with 4E posts to the point that it drowns out any of the natural discussion in those areas. Additionally, I want to have a single forum where our community can post their hopes, fears, concerns, and dreams about 4E. This will make it easier for the D&D staff to read community feedback, and to (hopefully) provide a lot of answers to your questions.

The WizOs will be moderating this forum and others. They are acting on the direction of Wizards of the Coast, so if you're upset with their moderation, please don't take it out on the WizOs. Their goals will be clear: Keep 4th Edition discussion in the 4E forum. This might mean locking threads and/or moving posts.

If you have concerns, questions, or issues about the forum moderation taking place after the 4th Edition announcement, I've created a thread here where you may discuss your concerns.

Finally, please try to be respectful in your posts and comments. Be nice to other posters, the WizOs, and WotC staff. The WizOs will be enforcing all Code of Conduct rules on all forums as usual.

If you have any suggestions or ideas on how I can do a better job of helping to facilitate communication between the D&D Staff and the Community, I've created a thread here.

Thanks!
-Mike
Does this mean 4th edition chamges for minis too, or a more common rule set to rule them all?

Wow!  I'm stunned.  I can't believe that 4E has been announcec, no matter how often I have joked about it.  I knew it would happen eventually, but I thought it would be at least until D&D XP before they announced anything.

Just wow.

Hmmm...I keep thinking that I should feel like sticking my tongue out at everybody who told me I was crazy for preaching the doom and gloom, but in reality, I feel sad. I'll have no new books to look forward to, wouldn't be interested in the digital stuff even if it was 3e and this will likely take away some of the last remaining enthusiasm I had for ever finding a new group.

I am more concerned about the minis. I was fearing the worst when I initially saw the streamlined rules blurb on the new starter announcement. I don't know how much the rules to DDM will change, but hopefully it will be a change for the better. Some stuff has been re-clarified so many times that I doubt anybody knows for sure how they work. I just hope they find a fix without some bannings or set rotation crap and the older pieces remain useable....other than Epic Tordek, Bahamut and Epic Storm Archer....those are welcome to be banned.

initial reaction-uuggh!, I just got the 3.5 books not too long ago...
& this opens the door to the question how often are we going through new additions?
I was always irritated with needing to update software for my computer every couple of years, not generally too interested in doing something that would be similar in my mind for my hobby...

edit: I'll cross my fingers on the mini thing.

I can't see them making too many changes that would make peoples' current minis collections obselete.  I imagine that they will be doing everything that they possibly can to keep the current minis usable under the new format, what ever that is.  At the same time, they will try and make changes to appeal to new gamers.

The minis wont become useless for RPG ever. Don't need 3.5, 4 or any edition for RPG use.

But I could see the rules for skirmish possibily changing. They don't really need too as there are so many differences between the RPG and Skirmish anyway that a different edition wont really matter.

If D&D goes like Star Wars Saga it could be ): If they do a lot of rule change it might seem apt to change the skirmish rules. Would like to know if the "new minis game" is a completly new game (aka Dreamblade II) or if they mean for skirmish to become that new game. They would I imagine have downloads for the changes if so.

As long as they keep producing minis.

The Skirmish game is pretty much seperate from the RPG, so dont see it being effected much.

If you are concerned with your minis not being usable for 4th edition, think about it this way - would they be usable for 1st edition AD&D? 2nd ed AD&D? Basic D&D from the 80s? Heck, yes! I don't foresee any problem at all actually regarding the RPG value of my minis in the future. As I've stated in other threads - I collect these minis primarily because it's what I've been wanting since starting RPGing in '82. Will they be useful in the next 25 years of my gaming life? You bet!

If the minis game does change significantly.  I could see them producing downloadable cards for previously released minis.

And I do understand that the minis will still be useful for RPG in general.  There is the slight possibility that WotC changes the minis scale in the new game so that it is no longer compatible though.  I doubt this is a realistic probabilty though.

Presumably, 4th edition will see a new Monster Manual I (and then II, III, IV etc.), and the list of creatures in it will be slightly different to the 3e MM I - just to validate having a new book. Some creatures won't make the cut. I wonder if that means that some of the current MM I creatures that haven't yet been made will in fact never be made? Perhaps we'll even start to see some new creatures which, at the moment, we don't recognise because they are due to appear in the new MM I.

So far, the minis we know about from Desert of Desolation are pretty much all resculpts - Mummy, Drider, Umber Hulk, Drow 'priestess'. Perhaps the next set won't have a lot of 'new' creatures from 3e MM I, as some of the missing creatures are going to be phased out anyway. I wouldn't be terribly happy about that.

The minis game could be about army battles, like WarCry or Heroes of MM.

I hope it won't ruin my favourite minis game

Like stated lots the minis for RPG will never change , its the books that will (If you want I'm sticking to 3.5, I already skipped 2nd edition and it hurt me none...but bought some the books for info). But I agree this is way to early for 4th Edition...

I am kind of interested in the online game table.  I wonder if there is going to be an online DDM tool as well.

1E : 1979 (or so...)
2E : 1989
3E : 1999

... 2009 ...

frankly, didn't you see it coming (OK, some of you aren't oldschoolers... But some are) ???

DDM : for RPG, I'm not concerned a single bit. I have 2500 minis, and almost anything I'll ever need for RPG. I can't see why I would need new special new 4E minis, and why mine would ever get obsolete. A blue dragon is still a blue dragon, a kobold is still a kobold, a beholder is still a beholder...

Skirmish is another matter. It's easy for wotc to produce larger minis (what they have already more or less begun doing for some time - remember all the size creep threads - with new bases and new rules. This will lead to a split in the skirmish players, with the "oldschoolers" with 3E DD minis and rules, and "newbies" with 4E new minis and rules. Eventually the former group will disappear over the years.

I doubt that the general size of minis will change. Size creep might be an issue, but one inch equaling five feet is pretty industry-standard. If Wizards changed this, not only would DDM be out of scale, but every one of the off-brand 1-inch-grid poly-mats and such would be unusable.

I'm not a specialist at all, but it seems they're not using this scale anymore, they use 28 mm now .

If Wizards changed this, not only would DDM be out of scale,

Seeing the "economical"  size od D&D, do wotc really have to care about the "competition" ? I don't see them threatened by reaper, rackam and others... If wotc decide to use a new scale, it probably will set a new standard.

but every one of the off-brand 1-inch-grid poly-mats and such would be unusable.

But there's nothing to be gained with that. Wizards doesn't manufacture the dry-erase polymats, so what reason would they have to force us to buy new ones? Also, even if the figures themselves are slightly bigger, why would that affect the size of the minis' bases? Moving from 25mm to 28mm should be enough to make everyone confused with a 1.2" = 5 feet mat (or whatever).

Well, the size of the "large" base did change from the wotdq set (from 40 mm to 48 mm), so I suppose they can do it again...

Yes, but the large based was simply adjusted to fit the correct size (10 feet by 10 feet, or two squares by two squares). That really doesn't change the 1 square = 5 feet deal.

Before we cry any more doom and gloom, note that D&D 4th edition was announced (the roleplaying game). There has been no word how (or even if) DDM will be affected.
