I know this is an old figure, but tonight was the first time I had attempted to use Motivate on a figure that wasn't the nearest.

We couldn't find an errata on the Motivate special ability.

We later found this article, but it is just an article.
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mi/20070607a

The card reads something like:
Motivate replaces attacks; 1 ally within 6 squares can immediately move up to its Speed.

So, by the special abilities, ranged targeting and spells definition, this should probably target only the nearest ally.

I tried to search Wizards site and Maxminis for hobgoblin Marshal and only found an errata about the Marshal's commander effect.

Can anyone point me to an errata that explains that he can or cannot motivate "any" figure within 6 squares?Â

The card does not contain the word "any" for this ability.

Thanks,

I can not point to any errata on this, but you can target any ally within 6 squares, they do not have to be closest. I believe it's based on the drider sorcerer's transposition.
Champion of a Medium Dog & then a Darkenbeast , Raistlin Majere, Nightmare WDQ25/60, Warduke WD60/60,
Anti-Champion of Guns, "Knight of Bugbears", and Joke Champion of Venger.

Only "ranged spells and special abilities" need to target the nearest enemy or ally. The explicit definition of a "ranged spell or special ability" is in the Eratta/FAQ document, starting at the very bottom of page 4:

Some rules refer to "ranged" spells and special abilities. Ranged spells and special abilities are those that target the nearest enemy or ally. A spell or special ability is ranged if it has one of the following range keywords: range 6, cone, line 12, and sight. All other spells and special abilities do not count as ranged (those with the range keywords self, touch, your warband, and any warband).

Since the Hobgoblin Marshall's Motivate ability doesn't use one of the relevant range keywords, it isn't a "ranged special ability" and therefore doesn't require the nearest enemy or ally to be the target.

LCS,

Thanks, we just couldn't find the specific rule that would allow the Motivate to work. We checked the definition of "any" and we checked the Hobgoblin Marshal's errata.
Now the judges and I will know where to look.

As it turned out it wasn't a make or break for the match, it just delayed the inevitable.

Thanks,
