I think it was solid, but nothing to write home about. Yes it was a started set, but it was flooded with PC types. It only had a medium Dragon, the Wyvern, and a Hook Horror for "Big Time" monsters. And there were only about 4 skirmish worthy pieces. No one really hates it, I think its just a universal "meh" for the most part.

I personally rather enjoyed aberrations, but I think aberrations is rather unpopular for a combination of reasons:

(1) There was no signature large dragon or other "chase" rare.

(2) It was a "100 point" set- no mini was worth more than 70 points, and most were much lower. People tend to like beefy kritters.

(3) Lots of nonstandard monsters- Ice Trolls, Taers, that sorta stuff. People tend to like conventional, classical monsters.

I think aberrations is a rather underrated set- nice skirmish pieces (Ryld, FB, HEBI) mixed with some classic monsters (hook horror!) and lots of variety.

i think, like vash said, that the set was underwhelming. nothing that made people say "wow" skirmish wise or rpg wise. it's not hated so much as overlooked. overlooked, mostly, with good reason.

I also love it, it is the set I have the most miniatures from, especially the Dragon Samurai ( Five times as nice as the Dwarf Samurai,IMHO ).

From my armies, I have hordes of Hill Dwarf Warriors, Man-At-Arms, Elf Warriors, Sharn Cuttroaths,Bladebearer Hobgoblins, Dekanter Goblins, Emerald Claw Soldiers, Half-Illithid Lizardfolks, Kobold Champions ( Nicest Kobolds so far...) and Sorcerors, Silent Wolf Goblins, Carrion Tribe Barbarians, Gnolls, Mountain Orcs, Orc Sergeants And Yuan-Ti
Halfbloods. They were cheap back then, all look nice and I bought them in mass [:)]

Completely useless for skirmish, but a great RPG piece (at least for me...)

I know that some people did not like the set as it was a 100 point set. That does not make it a bad set. Others are looking for the monsters, so all the PC type figures were disappointing. I do not have a problem withthe set and personally use several minis in it for skirmish.

I think it was a great set for RPG pieces. Skirmish was a bit iffy though.

c'mon, Hook Horror, Wyvern, Gibbering Mouther?

It seems by posts past and present, it is the skirmishers who really don't like it. It was a set for the RPGers.

Now I fall into both catergories. It is my least liked set. But I dont hate it!

I think a part of it is that after getting more powerful minis in the two previous sets, Archfiends and Giants of Legends, the relatively weaker Aberrations minis were somewhat of a letdown.

There was a fair amount of Eberron and Forgotten Realms content in that set and those settings turn some players off for a number of reasons. Eberron in particular it seems.

Distribution seemed a little poor too. I have tons of some commons and uncommons while getting almost none of others.

I think the set had some nice sculpts and inculdes a few nice minis I use for RPG and skirmish, the Crow Shaman, FB, HEBI, Green Dragon, Silent Wolf Goblin, Ryld etc...

I think there are a lot of small knocks againts the set that people have added together to make it one of the least popular.

It was pretty mediocre. I personally liked a lot of pieces from it, but it lacked some wow monsters.

Hook Horror (althought cool) and that bird/wyvern were nothing to write home about, so when you pull a rare, you're usually let down.

Four words

Fiendish Giant Praying Mantis.

Seriously,
I started collecting to fill in when I couldn't role-play. I could still have my figures and think of good times.
Now that I skirmish, I don't use figs from that set much, but I still like the way they look... except for the FGPM.

Yeah, that might be it. It didn't have that "blow your socks off" type of mini. One large dragon and I think people would be more favorable toward this set.

I didn't mind the set
It had sea-devils, wyverns, flesh golem(I don't like the sculpt but its there), chuuls, hook horrors, green dragons,Acherai, gibbering mouther, choker and another mindflayer. I'm not complaining yes there has been better sets but it had some gems.

It's a matter of personal opinion. I think that people who buy for the rares loved Deathknell, while people like me who want good commons absolutely hated it. Aberrations was the exact opposite. Good commons and useful but boring rares.

I think every set from now on should have a large, evil dragon in it. We still have brown dragons, fang dragons, shadow dragons, the Ratelyr dragon, Scalamagdrions and Rock Wyrms just from the Forgotten Realms. Throw in monsters from the Draconomicon, 2E psionic dragons, Eberron, Dragonlance, etc. and we're good to go.

It's deja vu all over again.

Abberations is a middle of the road set...
some pretty awesome pieces...

Hook Horror, Sahuagin Ranger, Ice Troll, Ryld Argith, Wyvern, Chuul, Yuan-Ti Abomination

Some nice army pieces..
Hill Dwarf Warrior, Gnoll, Elf Warrior, Man-at-Arms

One of my favourite pieces
Valenar Commander, though I use him as a human desert dweller

has some disappointing sculpts that could have been way better:
Ogre Zombie, Choker, Ethereal Filcher, Mountain Orc, Exorcist of the Silver Flame, Flesh Golem

And has some crap bottom end of:
Carrion Tribe Barbarian, Anvil of Thunder, Celestial Black Bear, Mongrelfolk, Iron Cobra

And the trully and total POS...
Aasimar Favored Soul, Achaierai, Rhek, Warforged Hero, Longtooth Barbarian, Mad Slasher, Taer

Well, it was coming off of GoL, which was just fantastic (except for the huge distribution). Great figure selection, great sculpt, great paint. Aberrations just wasn't as sexy. Some good stuff, like the first large uncommon, but the rest... the uncommons were better than many rares (I bought a lot of bladebearer and sahuagin singles on ebay).

Are you judging those by RPG viability, sculpts or skirmish usefulness? I actually really like the Iron Cobra, Achaierai, Warforged Hero and Longtooth Barbarian. Celestial Black Bears are summons, and thus nice even if I wasn't wowed by them.

Why do I dislike Aberrations?

Let me count the ways:

1) Flesh Golem
2) Fiendish Dire Chicken (Acherai)
3) Fiendish Preying Mantis
4) Alusair Obarskyr
5) Exorcist of the Silver Flame
6) Skullsplitter
7) Ice Troll
8) Ogre Zombie

There were some good pieces, Frenzied, Crow Shaman, Ryld, but many many boring and underwhelming minis.

I think it was a mediocre set overall, for me. There were some good RPG pieces but there were also some eyesores as well.

The Fiendish Giant Praying Mantis was the worse of them all, followed by the Ogre Zombie, Adventuring Wizard and Flesh Golem.

To me, there are really no BAD sets as you cannot please everyone, but balance-wise Aberrations was hurting. In my opinion of course.

Why do I love Abberations:

1)Sahuagin Ranger

2)Bladebearer Hobgoblin

The two minis that I still have an uncontrollable urge to snatch up and collect as many as I possibly can. It's kinda unhealthy and weird, actually, now that I think about it.

4) Skullsplitter ( Just a pitiful male or female common barbarian...)
5) Ice Troll ( He looks small and pathetic...)
6) Alusair Obarskyr ( Nothing to write to mom about...)
7) Crow Shaman ( What in blazes ??? )
8) Ogre Zombie ( Not how I picture an Ogre or a Zombie or a large...)
9) Gibberish Mouther ( Just odd...)

One area where it really struggled was with its commons. While it didn't have a WTF, it did have a Taer, Mongrelfolk, Weasel, and 5 non-"monster" humanoids.

The uncommons were a mixed bag, with alot of "weird" stuff. Probably what you want from uncommons, but there wasn't much there to wow you.

There were some good rares, but there was also alot of questionable entries, and what seemed like a BUNCH of PC/character types.

Finally, a quick glance at the Aberrations gallery doesn't show very many creatures that are Skirmish worthy. Only 2 commanders from this set make it into the "toolkits", and one of these is the Kobold Sorcerer, who's probably a dubious choice at best.

One of the worst sets (ony ldragoneye was worse IMHO). Far to many pc characters and too many awful rares. It probably didn't help that it followed GoL which had a ton of great figures, but would any of the top rares in Aberrations even crack the top 5 in any set since?

DK - Couatl, Beholder, Blue Dragon, Zombie White Dragon, Gold Dragon (plus Ettin and Death Knight for RPG).

Angelfire - Stone Giant, Mounted Pally, Large Copper, Ogre Mage, Efreet, Celestial Peg, Hezrou, Troll Slasher even, (+ Djinn, Red Slaad, Barbed Devil for RPG)

UD - Marut, Iron Golem, Balor, Helmed Horror, Mounted Drow, Deep Dragon, Aspect of Kord (plus Roper and 1/2 Fiend Ogre for RPG).

Would you take a Yuan Ti abomination, Hook Horror, Ice Troll or whatever other rare from Aberrations over any of these figures? You might be able to make an argument over one or two of them (and maybe if you are looking at skirmish only, because then you would probably want a Frenzied Berserker and Ryld which are pretty bland sculpts). The large rares were mostly awful - Ogre Zombie, Wyvern (I don't like the new version), FGPM, Acherai. I also do not like the green dragon sculpt, but all will be forgiven if they do a great job on the large green.

The set was without a must have figure. Harbinger had the core monsters of D&D. Dragoneye had dragons. Archfiends had demons and devils. Giants of Legend had giants and dragons.

Aberrations had nothing great. There were a bunch of good figures, but nothing great, so it lacked that figurehead piece that is so key. If people listed their top 20 rare pieces for RPG from all of DDM, very few people would put even 1 aberrations creature on that list. In fact, you'd have to go into the 50s on my list of RPG rares before you hit my first Aberrations creature, the Yuan-ti Abomination.

Had it contained a beholder, a large chromatic dragon, a powerful demon, a powerful devil, an awesome golem, or some other highly demanded piece for RPG, it may very well have been sen as a good set. Without that central piece ... the good pieces couldn't make up for the lack of greatness.

You know it didn't even have any hard-core unique minis. Alusair who? Ryld - k... ooo, a named drow... whooptie-doo.

I think alot of the great figures were the uncommons and commons. Hill Dwarf Warrior, Elf Warrior, Emerald Claw Soldier, Sahuagin Ranger...

And yes, the fatalness of no Beholder or even a beholder-kin...

I don't dislike Abberations, really. It had a lot of good stuff. Personally, I like getting a fair number of PC types with my monsters. I would be sorely dissapointed by a 90% monster set.

I think the problem with Abberations is that it had some really really bad rares. Rares that have bad skirmish stats are one thing. Rares that have bad skirmish stats, sub-par sculpt quality, and its a bizarre, obscure or silly concept in the first place - that's another thing entirely. (Archaieri, Mantis, Half-Illithid Lizardfolk)

Also, look at the Flesh Golem. Its a just plain bad representation of a Flesh Golem.

For RPG I would take the Yuan-ti Abomination over the Helmed Horror, Marut, Iron Golem, Aspect of Kord, Celestial Pegasus, Djinn, Efreet, Large Copper, Mounted Paladin, Beholder, Gold Dragon, and Couatl since I am far more likely to use a Yuan-ti Abomination than any of those.

I am not gone.

From a skirmish standpoint, Aberrations was pretty dissapointing, since the only relly good skirmish peices from that set were the Frenzied Berserker, Crow Shaman, Ryld, HEBI, Elf Warrior, and maybe one or two others.

I started playing when Aberrations came out, so it's always been kind of special. *sigh* How come I didn't start playing when Archfiends came out? [B)]
