| So, what do you think? Comparing this to Harbinger and Aberrations, do you think it's the best of the starters? Do you think it's not? Why?
I'll start. I think it's the best starter. I'd have voted for Harbinger over Aberrations, not for nostalgic reasons either. But, this set gives a lot of great options, has a lot of great, playable pieces, and offers something meaningful to all the factions (if, for instance, you're starting out with this set, you can collect just War Drums and have fun with all the factions).

| | I have to agree. I still love my Harbinger stuff, but I gotta say that this is an exciting time to be getting into DDM. You have some stellar figures from the last 2-3 sets, and some great creatures in WarDrums so that going broke on EBAY is not required to get in, have fun, and be competitive. | | Rhane "The focus is sharp in the city..." | For RPG:
Harbinger is the best. There were too many key monsters in that set. There are a good number of them in War Drums, too ... but there are also a lot of pretty useless RPG figures as well. Arcane Ballista and Orc War Drummer are going to be limited use RPG figures, at best.
RPG Ranking: Harbinger, War Drums, Aberrations
For Skirmish (constructed):
War Drums looks like the best. Aberrations and Harbinger were both full of hit and miss minis, while War Drums has a nice flat plateau of minis wiothout any real losers. We'll have to see if any of the titans in the set can finally supplement the LSD as a tier 1 titan.
Skirmish constructed rankins: War Drums, Aberrations, Harbinger
For Skirmish (limited):
War Drums will be awesome for limited play. I've already generated about 100 limited booster pairs, and I must say that the pulls have been great. Most of the pairs of packs have resulted in viable warbands that have a chance to compete, with only a few being clearly outclassed by the average pull. The only problem: I'm consisntantly having trouble fitting in the 9 to 25 point pieces ... I rarely fit in more than 1, unless my two rares are very cheap. This will reduce the variety we'll see in limited play ... Aberrations was better balanced for limited than Harbinger.
Skirmish (limited) rankings: War Drums, Aberrations, Harbinger
Overall rankings: War Drums first, Aberrations & harbinger tie for second. | | Champion of Meepo _*_ Myztek on the Wizards Boards. _*_ (2206 DDM on 03/06/06) Please note: The use of the indicates an attempt at humor ... often a bad attempt. BAD EBAY SELLERS LIST (CLICK HERE): AVOID AT ALL COSTS

| Comparison...
Harbinger: - better core figures - set of 80
Wardrums: - better balanced DDM - better paints and sculpts - uncommon larges - too much repetition

| It's gonna be hard to beat Harbinger for RPG. It had 80 pieces for one thing. They were able to add 3 or so of certain creature types and still have a lot to offer other places. If there were another 20 figs in Wardrums, I think the set (minus the pile of warforged) would rank right up there.
Harbinger would have ranked right up there in Skirmish too if the game had continued to be a 100 point game. The difficult pieces wouldn't have been abandoned and the newer sets wouldn't have needed to be powered up. Wasn't Aberrations really a 'tweener set. Good for both 100 and 200 play? This is the first starter meant for primarily 200 point play, so it's not a fair comparison due to the evolution of the game. | | Never teach a pig to sing. | | I was about to say something similar to Zoons. Abberations was primarily a 100 point set, because at the time that was the emphasis. Now 200 and 500 is the emphasis, so most of us like WD better for skirmish (since the true norm is 200 point play). | | E-mail | Have/Want List | Reference thread "Whatever you do, don't drop a blade barrier on a troll."

| If we had another 80 pieces for War Drums, I don't think that the Warforged Brigade would even phase us. Twenty pieces can cover a LOT of ground. Imagine the Gnolls and Kuo-Toa that could have been produced!!
Even another TWELVE could have really shifted things.
There might have even been room to squeeze in a Gnome or Halfling.
But, I'm not going to gripe over-much (at least I'm trying not to do so). War Drums still looks to be a very solid set. There may not be a "killer" piece, but with what look to be several very solid pieces, I don't think we can honestly ask for too much more. | | Champion of the Werewolf Lord, Knight of Anything Duergar, and Squire of Things Gnollish List reset with the start of previews for each new set...got Chainmail®? | |

| I'll just echo the recurring sentiment of:
Harbinger: Better RPG set War Drums: Better skirmish set Aberrations: Silly as a starter set
