War of the Dragon Queen Preview 7 Ride-Along Program by Stephen Schubert
Since the first set of D&D Miniatures, players and fans have been asking for mounted figures. In War of the Dragon Queen, we deliver. This week we'll look at three rare mounted minis from July's upcoming set. Clawfoot RiderClawfoot Rider
In the world of Eberron, nomadic halfling tribes follow herds of dinosaurs across the Talenta Plains and use the flesh-eating Clawfoots as mounts. The clawfoot dinosaur is related to the carver, known to many of us as deinonychus. It is the preferred battle mount for the Talenta tribes.
The Clawfoot Rider (with Clawfoot) provides the Chaotic Good faction with an interesting piece of highly mobile ranged fire. While its AC 18 and 65 hit points are enough to let it stick around to use its two melee attacks, the Clawfoot Rider is best used in a run-and-shoot-and-run attack. The premier ability for the Rider is its Mounted Ranged Attack, which allows it to move up to 16 squares and make a ranged attack (at +14 for 10 magic damage) anywhere along the way. Of course, sometimes it would rather just sit in place and shoot twice, instead. It doesn't have the ranged damage output of something like Aberration's Half-Elf Bow Initiate, but it has much more maneuverability for only a few points more. Blackguard on NightmareBlackguard on Nightmare
I mentioned in an earlier article that I'd highlight more of the transparent plastic minis included in the set, so as follow-through I give you the mounted Nightmare, a beast of clear plastic and perhaps more black paint than we've ever used on a single mini. The Blackguard on Nightmare makes a great recurring villain in your D&D game, and fans of the Forgotten Realms might use this mini to represent a certain High Captain and Castellan of Zhentil Keep, even if the nightmare isn't white like hers.
Fans of the D&D Miniatures Game will recognize a few of the abilities of the Lawful Evil Blackguard, including Sneak Attack, Smite Good, and Tyrannical Morale (+6, this time). The Nightmare adds a few features of its own. To capture the flavor of flaming hooves, this mini's damage gets boosted to 10 magic + 5 fire. Inspired by the at-will etherealness ability of the Monster Manual nightmare, we also gave this mini the ability to Blink Out for a round, which turns it incorporeal as a swift action. With these abilities and Mounted Melee Attack, in the right situation, the Blackguard can lay down 30 damage on a good-aligned foe from nearly anywhere on the board (or at least 20 squares away). All this from a mini that can take two hits from a Hill Giant Barbarian and keep ticking. Tundra Scout (not to scale)Tundra Scout
One of two Huge mounted figures in War of the Dragon Queen, the Tundra Scout is in fact a frost giant on a mastodon. I'm not sure that more needs to be said.
The Tundra Scout defines 'large and in charge'. During the development cycle, this guy was simply fun to play because of his combination of abilities. It starts with running over a Large or smaller enemy to deal 25 damage (DC 22) with Trample. Then, stop in a square adjacent to the target and follow up the trample with a melee attack at +19 for 25 damage. Pushback from the attack throws your target back a square. You still aren't done, because Strike in the Air says that if you use Pushback against an adjacent foe, you can attack that target one more time, so you get another attack at +19 for 25 damage. For a little more fun, throw in an orc Cleric of Gruumsh. His commander effect gives you Cleave which can be used with Melee Reach 3. In case you haven't guessed, this Huge mini is for Epic play only, as his 166-point cost will attest. Now if only someone could block those Fomorians!
Next week: Something to do with Scarlet, but not the Brotherhood, and something to do with Bane, but not Xvim. I'll applaud those who figure out this one.

| So, my opinion ...
WOW!
Lots of juicy goodness there to my mind. I like all three.
The Clawfoot Rider may be my least favourite, but I am still impressed.
The Nightmare looks pretty good with the clear plastic and the skirmish stats sound nifty.
Tundra Scout, we have seen, but up close this time and more infor on skirmish. Excellent from what I can tell. Watch out Fomorians.

| | I'm pleased with the variety of mounted minis in this preview. Even though I may never use the Halfling figure, it still looks neat. | Yeah, with at least four mounted minis in this set I think we can count on at least one mounted mini in each set to come, provided they have a good concept.

So, I am not up on FR, but I assume that the female Blackguard on the nightmare is a close approximation to the Scylla or someother?

The painting on the blackguard is very blaise which leads me to suspect it's probably a production-value image. I only count about 7 colors of paint which is low for a master, about normal for a rare production piece. If it looks close to that sweet I'll be happy [:D] | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. | hehehe, can't wait for Dooku's reply. [}:)] No new minis this time, only a picture of the Blackguard on Nightmare. I actually like most of 'em.
I hate dinos but the halfling on deinonychus concept is kind of cute. Won't need more than one though.
I think the Mounted Nightmare is a production figure, judging from the Blackguard on its back. I am not sure about the clear plastic use here. I think it'll look great in hand, but on the picture its kind of weird. all in all: ok figure.
The Tundra Scout is the highlight of the preview. Obviously a paint master (check the runes on the mammoths tusks!), but I think the production figure will still be awesome! I would like to have two at least and three if possible when the set 'll be released.

| WORST PREVIEW EVER!!!
Blech..Why are there like 5 mounted minis in this set?
I have wanted a Deinonychus for a while now. I still want one. The Eberron halfling rider is OK I guess. This is my favorite of the three. It only makes me vomit in my mouth a little bit.
The Nightmare is beautiful. I dont see anything cartoony about it. And once again WotC changes my view on clear plastic. It can look really awsome if done right. The horrible tumor on its back however really ruins it though.
I hear there is a Frost Giant on a Mastadon in Shackled City. That is this minis only saving grace. Except who ever heard of a beardless Frost Giant? The only thing that really impressed me was all the runes carved into the tusk. I never noticed that looking at the Green Spoiler pic and the Preview X pic. | | Champion of the Skulk Vindicated Champion of the Twig Blight | |

It was worth joining maxminis just to read that - it brings new meaning to the expression 'damning with faint praise'. Even so, it's an unpleasant image that I wish you hadn't put in my head, Count [}:)]. I only like the Nightmare. Even though it is mounted, I can accept that a Nightmare might actually appear mounted in adventures reasonably often. The other two I simply wouldn't ever use, so I won't buy them.
Not the absolute worst preview ever for me - but it's not setting WotDQ alight either [)]. | | Champion of the Bodak.Knight of the Aboleth.Squire of Gnomes. Friend of (Non-Ugly) Fey. Nightmare - beautiful mini, I think they may have gone a bit overkill with the clear plastic on this one though. It looks like it's sitting on a blob of Fire..

| | Well Amurayi, I would have preferred an invisible blackguard on my nightmare. I really dislike the notion of mounted minis and this set is chock full of them. They look nice, but I will never use them. The black dragon and the mastadon have the added disadvantage of taking up a ton of space on top of being pigeon holed for RPG by their rider. No way they end up in my collection, but they look nice. | | Thailfi's Have/Want List Thailfi's References | |

I don't use dinos or play eberron, but the sculpt looks good and the skirmish stats might have possibilities.
Nightmare and Rider, very nice. This will be great for RPG and skirmish (depending on cost). I look forward to owning one. I also expect a repaint to come out with a white nightmare, if you catch my meaning; and later on a nightmare without a rider. [:)]
The Tundra Scout is cool (no pun intended). I don't mind the mastadon and rider, this can serve as a frost giant king until a different one comes out. | I'm excited about all three figures. I think the Halfling is great for RPGers in Eberron, and can be a harrowing piece for the CG faction...except the cost seems quite high.
The Frost Giant/Mastodon seems like it would be great, and since I tend to run cold-based campaigns will see action at my gaming table regardless of his Epic prowess.

Halfling on Dino: B cool for Eberron lovers, and not so terrible as the fiendish T-rex
Nightmare: B would have been better without the rider but still pretty sweet with it, the clear plastic looks good, but needs a closer inspection to be sure.

A halfling on a dinosaur... hey, as a DM I come up with some weird stuff too. Doesn't mean I turn them into minis. [:p]
