You would be surprised at the number of encounters with Tiamat/Takisis in printed material since 1st edition. Strickly from printed material our group would have used the figure as the dragon queen herself four times.

We still play 1e/3e so all four encounter are pre 3rd edition. We ran through the 1st two series of Dragonlance modules. | | Thailfi's Have/Want List Thailfi's References

As has already been pointed out, if you need dragons of that size, there are plenty of other dragons on the market (McFarlane for example) that work perfectly fine for RPG. Using DDM for RPG is just convient, not necessary. I used minis before DDM, and I am still using non-DDM minis in the games now.
True for dragons and other classic monsters (trolls, skeletons...) But DDM is irreplaceable for the other D&D specific monsters like sahuagin, hook horrors, achaierai and many many others. | | Vindicated Champion of the PSEUDODRAGON (Unhappy) vindicated champion of the DRYAD Against the giants called shot : huge cloud giant female Demonweb called shot : ghost

Me too but - and I know how foolish this is - I prefer not to. Even though it is silly, and sometimes possibly even counterproductive, I prefer to use DDM only wherever possible cos I like the unified look and feel of the minis on the map. | | Champion of the Gelatinous Cube. I would rather not use the McFarlane dragons and others, as I prefer to have minis that look like the typical "D&D monsters". I just like having the right minis for the job. You are not foolish. I completly agree. Any time someone says "I dont need XXXX as a mini. I can get plenty of those at a toy store." I cringe. | | Champion of the Skulk Vindicated Champion of the Twig Blight

| I agree with Sulaco, the Count and Dordledum. I also want my minis to look consistent. On the one hand it's fussy, I realise (some would say "anal" [:D]), but on the other hand there are also some practicalities. You get the players used to one set of bases and rules about size categories, and then you start to throw in a whole load of other base shapes and sizes, and out-of-scale creatures. What do you get? You get:
"I measure to the edge of the round base, but how do I measure to the edge of that square base?"
"How many of my summoned creatures can I fit around that base?"
"I want to cast an area effect spell, but I need to know how big the opponents are. That Giant is supposed to be 10ft tall, but how about that toy dinosaur? How about the rubber centipede? How long are the McFarlane Dragon and the Gargantuan Black you are using to proxy as a merely Huge Black? And I know you've told me twenty times already, but how tall is the Action Man covered in red crepe paper that you are using to represent Imix, Prince of Elemental Fire?" [:p]

| | Now that there are increasing numbers of published adventures for mid- to high- levels, there are significant numbers of times when one needs huge dragons, correctly sized for the size rules in D&D. I need those huge dragons as much as I need the large and medium miniatures of DDM for my D&D game. Huge black dragons so far show up in each of the two Dungeon Adventure Paths. | | | |
