OK, I'm a sucker for dice. I love em. I cannot resist the allure of a few new, shiny dice to wield in my games. I often 'forget my dice' (or so I claim), just to get some knew ones.

Am I slightly mad, or is anyone else like me?

Most gamers are like that. While I love dice, I know I don't need any more (I have something like 7-8 sets), and I haven't bought any dice in 3-4 years.

You're not slightly mad, you're completely nuts.

I know, I'm the same way. I started out with about
nine 20 sided dice on Saturday morning. before Saturday
was over, I owned 12. I saw 3 that looked cool.

Not all gamers are like that.
I have 2 sets of dice. I have the set I like to use and the set that gathers dust in my D&D breifcase.
Owning a set of dice is like owning paper and a pencil...Its necessary to play the game..but they hold no allure for me.

You are not alone however. I have gamers constantly say things like "You can never have to many dice" or "I bought another dice set. I loved the look of them...I own like 200 dice now".

I dont get it...But its not just you :)

I used to be like that, but I quit buying dice. After a while, I had so many different colored dice, I didn't knew which were mine anymore. So I accidently took dice of the players, nearly every session. Well... I guess enough is enough. At least my players know where to look if they are missing a dice.[:D]

There are some many nice sets out there now I find a set to match the color scheme, or background of my character.

Yes, you're mad. [:p] However, you're not alone. I have more dice than I could ever use but I'm always looking for more. New colors primarily. Can't wait to go to Gencon to see what's available.

I haven't bought new dice in like 10 years. Not that I haven't been tempted when something particularly fun crosses my path. However, I am very attached to the two sets I have now, and use them loyally (really hurts my game enjoyment if I forget mine, and have to use others).

I haven't bought new dice in years. My first set was a black set w/ white numbers, and rolled like crap. So I picked up a second set. Blue with gold numbers. These dice roll well. They roll very well. They roll so well that when I DM, I'm not allowed to use them. My players actually bought me a new set to use and informed me of this group decision. Now whenever my dice grow hot, and I score a near TPK, I can almost expect a replacement set of dice given to me, with the "evil DM dice" they gave me last time forced into retirement.

I blame Chessex. [:D] Some of the patterns they've released in the past few years have been, well, irresistable. I've got about five pairs of d6's (which I use for rpg) that rotate in and out while I'm playing, depending on what's rolling well and what isn't. I'm also the unofficial dice-loaner whenever someone else in the group forgets their dice.

And don't even get me started on q-workshop; I'm on a budget these days, so I have to strictly limit my visits to their website.

Cheers,

I second laying the blame on Chessex. I've got a Crown Royal bag full of dice, a second dice bag roughly the same size also full, and still manage to pick up a set or two of the new chessex lines when they come out. Right now, I'm really liking the gold/blue Geminis and the blue Festives I picked up over the last couple of months. The d20s have rolled me 3 confirmed crits with my 1st level illusionist's light crossbow in Living Greyhawk games over the past 3 weeks.

I love dice, I have a few dozens of them. I have a wizard and everytime she raised in levels I bought a new d4 for magic missile [:D] . No problem for the fireballs, because I had already grabbed every d6 there was in my house...
Recently I bought a d100 made of a large hollow transparent d10, containing a small red d10. Pretty cute, and almost impossible to cheat with this one... Bought a d24 too, very few uses but happy to have one anyway. Like my d30...

Yeh, I keep buying d20s even though I don't need em, but they come with the starters!

I do hate mismatched dice though. I like sets, I had to replace a white d20 with black numbers, and a few smokey grey d6s after they got lost... ok, I'm a different kinda dice nut.

Yeah, for D&D I have to have a set of dice. I only have a couple sets. One I used for a long time. I did get the whole "oh, gotta match my dice with my character" bug one time and got a new set for him...and lasted I think 4 sessions before the DM went crazy and I left the game.

For DDM, when I went to the Deathknell pre-release, our location did not get any Aberration Starters in, and so my wife and I had to buy new dice (we hadn't brought anything with us). I've used that die for DDM ever since.

I used to play Shadowrun though which just uses d6...and handfuls at that. I must have a bucket of close to 100 d6s from that. ha

I bought a lot of extra dice when I went flom Player to DM. Now I only add the occasional D20 from starter sets or fat packs to my collection.

I'd much rather use my money on books than dice. I end up buying new books every month or so, but I almost never buy new dice. I do try to grab any free dice at cons or anything though.

I've collected a sizable amount of d6 (used to play Star Wars RPG/Shadowrun which require a LOT of d6) and d20s over the years. I haven't actively picked up any new dice for a number of years (got a bunch of d20s in a case of Harbinger starters and one from War Drums--no spindown [:D]). If I see a dice set that is attractive, easy to read, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg I'll consider picking it up.

I've gamed with people who literally have thousands and thousands of dice. I also game with people who don't own any (and must borrow dice every time they game).

I think most gamers like buying dice because most gamers suffer from shiny-object-syndrome (SOS). "Ooh, look, shiny object....." It's a corellary to the easily-distracted-syndrome (EDS). "Shiny...object...what was I doing? ? ?"

I also have a dice addicition. However, I've learned some contstraint, and have recently cut my dice 'traveling pack' down to the following dice:

5 d4s (Magic Missiles)
10 d6s (Fireballs.... I can reroll for those effects requiring more than 10 d6s)
5 d8s (There are a few spells that use up to 5d8)
4 d10s (You rarely need more than 2)
4 d12s (See d10s)
4 d20s (See d10s... although they are useful as counters, too.)
1 d30 (Just because)
1 d3 (just because)
a few novelty dice ("Friend or Foe", 6 colors, no pips, etc...)

I buy a new set or three every year at GenCon. Other than that, I don't buy dice at game stores or on the web or anything.

But, I've been to about 15 or 20 GenCons, so I have a ton of dice. Back before minis, we used dice to represent baddies, and, well, when my players were fighting an army, I needed a ton of dice.

Today, I just have too many dice, but, by the middle of August, I'll have another dozen or two more.

A couple of friends and I went in on a Pound'o'dice around when Harbinger first came out and I haven't bought dice since (other than those that came in starter sets). Although I have had one set given to me.

I keep 4 complete "sets" in my chainmail dice bag. Sets is a loose term though, as there are only two actual sets, and the rest look good together. They're all in various colours of red and yellow (very fiery). Then because I DM frequently, or have characters with multi-energy weapons, I've also added in 4 more d20's of various colours.

I then keep another three or four sets in my back up bag, and the last 20 or 30 dice I own in a plastic baggie.

I did have my 4 skirmish d20s in a special case, but I think my 3-year old got into it so I'm going to have to search the house to find these missing dice. Must find them, because the replacement die I used rolled 8 1's and no 20's in the single skirmish game I used it in. [B)]

In terms of the number of dice I own... I currently own about 1000... This is in spite of:

1.) I gave away about 500 in 1990, and
2.) I have a hammer and steel plate that I use to permanently punish bad dice.

I have tons of dice. I never set out to buy more its always an impulse buy. I just wander through a store and see an unusual die and have to buy it or a die just calls out to me whispering my name over and over.... yes I am the dice whisperer, unfortunatly they never listen to me.

so to answer your question yes you are slightly mad no one else is quite like you, we are all slightly mad in our own strange, differrent little ways. [:D]

One, double-bottle wine box FULL of dice for PC RPG use.

One Cologne designer set box of dice for DM use.

And a bag of 20-siders for skirmish use, although a few of them are now in "Forced Retirement" in the PC box and one is somewhere under a rack at the old Outpost 2000 location.
