| My friend came in second at a Qualifier and won his Gen Con pass. He has now decided to go to Gen Con (yipee).
What does he do about events? He doesn't have his ticket yet and won't for a while. He'd like to sign up for some events but does he have to wait? He may decide to play in the MaxMinis draft with us and I don't want it to get sold out before he can.
any info is appreciated. thanks

| | I'm wondering the same thing, especially since I won my qualifier and WotC'll probably cover most of the plane ticket. But here's the thing; I didn't expect to win, so, uh...I'm caught unprepared. I have no idea what to expect or do about GenCon. Never been to it, never been to anything quite like it either. Any info would definitely be appreciated. | | - Irrationally Fanatical Champion of Pegasus-mounted cavalry - Proud member of Team Low Tier Beasting: I play CG as my main faction! - Garland, TX 2006 Qualifier Champion My trading thread: http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=19725 | |

| Do a search in generally on Gen Con. Lots of threads from a while ago. I went to Origins for the first time last year and had a good time. This should be even better because I've Qualifed and am attending with friends!
Also, just go to www.gencon.com and that has loads of info. Biggest thing probably will be to find a hotel room.

| I've only done GenCon SoCal (both years now), but from what I understand, you want to register in advance. ASAP. Everyone else pre-registers, so events sell out, and quickly. You should pick up some generic event tickets, too. They'll get you into any non-sold out event without registering in advance, and are only a buck each (IIRC).
Very different from SoCal, where nobody pre-registers. I guess we get too much sun, we're all very laid back out here (or maybe that's the medical marijuana talking?). | | Champion of the Entire Monster Manual 1! (Click link to see current progress!) Uncommon Painting Competition 2 Winner

| I believe you will have to buy a badge, then buy your events, then after you recieve your free qualifier badge you return your other badge for a refund.
Prereg ends on june 23 and the badges and event tickets are mailed out in early july so if you want to prereg for events you have to buy them by the 23rd.
to be sure you can shoot an email tocustomerservice@gencon.com
PatEllis asked the same question on the Gencon forums Here and customer service suggested the advice I gave above.

The one thing you want to do above all else is buy your events in advance, assuming you want to do things other than DDM. It a real pain to spend the first 4 hours at gencon waiting in the ticket lines.
Its also a good idea to leave time in your schedule to hit the vendor floor, even if you don't have much money you can clean up on swag.
If you are flying then I would recomend you find a hotel in walking distance (that may be tough at this point) but people drop out and rooms open up.I personally don't thing it would be worth it to rent a car as you will proably spend most of your time at the con, last year I drove to and from my hotel and that was it, I felt the fool for renting a car and got a hotel adjacent to the RCA dome this time.
