| | OK, so we know that the free booster won't be a WODTQ, since it it $13 value. Probably a wardrums or underdark booster? | They got these in at my FLGS today. It is in a box that you could easily mistake for the basic game, except for the Aberrations booster shrinkwrapped to the side. Inside is a softcover version of the Player's Handbook, some character sheets, and a solo adventure. The art on the box shows an Elf Pyromancer, a Half-orc monk, and an Axe Sister fighting a Displacer Beast. | | | |

| I'm going to give this a pass. Even at Amazon's price, it's just too gimmicky this close to WotDQ. I don't need more dice, a soft-covered PHB, or the sheer annoyance of opening an Aberrations booster.
Now, if these show up at HPB a couple years down the line, I might just get one for $10 if it's still sealed (and has the booster). [:P] | | Trade & talk in real time on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis SOFTWARE: PC | PC (free) | MAC

I don't think that the new Basic Game will replace the Player's Kit. The new Basic Game will be a newer version of the old Basic Game, but it won't have a full PHB.

| The players kit is different from the basic game. The players kit was designed to give the new player something to work from at an inexpensive price. So that is why the minis, dice, character sheets, and paper bound PHB.
The basic game was to give new players a way to quickly learn how to DM an adventure. So they gave you some premade characters, mini, dice, and an adventure. The cool thing is that they are redoing it and changing it up slightly. The addition of a large blue to the kit is very cool.
From looking them over, I would say that you really need this product if you have never played D&D before. It is a fantastic entry point. If you have played D&D, then they are good for an introduction for new players or for some specific minis. Personally I like the product and hope they take it a step further. I'd like to see them make some mini adventures and package them with some of the minis you might incounter in the adventure. Something that players could buy and play right out of the box. | | Sean Banks Champion of Elementals Official Organizer Gen Con 05 maxminis Event | Winterfantasy 06 maxminis Event | Gen Con 06 maxminis Event | Winterfantasy 07 Community Event

Hrm.... I never take it as a good sign when they start to recycle artwork. That's said, this particular piece didn't see wide use, and it is pretty sharp!
As stated, this isn't a product that will be pulled when the new basic game comes out...
WotC has a strategy for introducing new players to the game (Basic Set), and then bringing them forward. The Players kit is the next step. I find it interesting (though not surprising) that they are bundling some mini's with the kit, as more and more we are seeing DDM as a central component to the D&D brand, as opposed to a seperate product line.
In any event, WotC would next want those consumers to go buy the core books, and more mini's, and then finally, once the addiction is complete, cases, and a copy of each newly released book....

Shouldn't there be a Harbinger booster then in stead of an Aberrations one? [:p]

Trade paperback isn't the size, it will be the same size as a regular PHB just with a soft cover. The box and the aberations booster are shrinkwrapped together, my FLGS has them instock already. | | Champion of Champions (for all races! even Gnomes ) Reference Thread Winnipeg Gryphon Cavalry Forums

Sorry, but for what it's worth I think it's pretty apparent that the EXACT equivalent of the old "basic game" is the new "basic game". However, my earlier post is absolutely valid. They're limited run, and it's an entry level product for D&D. Very slightly not the same--yet 100% identical in intent and very similar in content as well. Both include gameplay instructions, and minis. . . both are good for people starting out. I'd even hazard that the marketing department gauged how many to make via the criteria that they're sold out by the time the basic game hits so they don't compete with themselves. Someone else mentioned the sales record of Abr., my opinion would be that this is a creative way to deal with a surplus of unsold aberrations boosters--since we "know" that they don't reprint sets. | | *WoTC Delegate (Chicago)* :=: My Trade Thread :=: DISPUTED TRADE WITH TREE DRUID!!!!!!!!

| I'm not sure what your point is, Jedijon. My point was that the Basic Game and the Player's Kit are two different products with different contents, and the new Basic Game won't replace the Player's Kit.
My understanding is that the "limited time" element is for the special promotional bundle (i.e. the free Aberrations booster). Once those are gone, the Player's Kit will continue to be available (without the booster).
As for the differences between the old Basic Game and the new Basic Game, the only thing I know for sure is that the new Basic Game includes a Large Blue Dragon. This change leads me to believe that the adventure in the new Basic Game will be different, too. The box art also indicates that there will be an entirely different set of minis included in the new Basic Game. I agree that the new Basic Game is intended to replace the old one.

Not picky, just pedantic. [)]
My point was that it was the Player's Kit and a booster, something I figured was obvious from the name "D&D Player's Kit with Free Miniatures Booster." I really didn't give a rat's ass what set it was from when I made the post. | | Champion of the Gelatinous Cube. Nemesis of Gnomes and Dinosaurs.
