Ever since Frostburn I've been pretty excited for new Frost Giants. I've also wanted a war elephant with a rider since GoL. The sculpt on the poster looks pretty cool.

Come on, it is a Frost Giant on a Mammoth! You can't beat that kind of cool except with maybe a Ninja AND a Pirate riding on a T-Rex.

Do you like games John?
Absolutely!

I find is so funny to hear about how people were DYING for mounted minis....and then WOTC started actually giving them to us....

Mounted Snig....everyone complains about how they are not the "right" size.
Griffon Cavalry - People hate the side angle view? Why? What a cool sculpt! Sure, you won't see many at 1st level....but man....that is awesome!
Sorcerer on Dragon - how many posts have there been about having people grind off the Sorcerer because they hate it ...oh...and then they add how it would have been o.k. if it was a WIZARD... ARE YOU KIDDING!!?!?!
Frost Giant on a Mammoth!! What is not to like?!?!!?!

In the end, I think we are getting a bit spoiled....5 years ago, each mini you had was as heavy as a PHB (V3.0!), probably half painted (best intensions and all)...and only 5 of those because they took so long to get half-done. Then, you had to carry them in special, Vaccuum sealed carrying canisters made by Nasa to make sure the paint doesn't chip and the metal didn't bend. On top of it all, the selection of minis wasn't really all that great....not very many monsters and really not as close to the MM sourcebooks....

These days, I have over 1000 minis and RPG has never been more intense! The last time our DM pulled the large Red from behind his screen and said "You see THIS."....our expressions were like the plastic itself had fightful aura! It was magical!

On top of it all...now we have a competative game that is like DND, but it is fast and furious....

THANK YOU WIZARDS!!! YOU ROCK!!!

I love the Tundra Scout....and I can't wait to get a herd of them...and you won't be hearing any whining from me about how they didn't make the mini how *I* would make it. In the end, I am NOT making minis, and they are....and I am eternally grateful to have a hobby as excellent as this one!!!!

A wand of silence means never having to say you're sorry.

My ONLY complaint re: the Frosty-Furry: You need to be able to surround him with Frost Giants on foot. Considering that the only other Frost Giant was a rare in GoL, and most people have no more than 1 or 2, I really wish we'd get an uncommon Frost Giant Warrior to use as ground troops next to this gy for high level encounters...

I'm not going to gush quite that much, but I like the Tundra Dude and the Mounted Dragon.* And better yet, from what I've seen they have some pretty interesting skirmish statistics.

* All WotDQ comments are in advance of seeing the actual figure, and can all change based on the quality of the paint jobs.

I think it is fine, although I'm not sure if I'm going to keep one if I get it. I like to have creatures in swarms, and I have no other Frost Giants. And, I like other Huge Rares better.

Snig - great! Griffon - absolutely marvellous! Blackguard - Super! Mounted paladin - Finally got one! [:D]

I think the Tundra Scout is great.

Most of the complaints have to do with how precious huge slots are. If we only get a huge set every 2 years, then we'll be waiting a long time for the hydra, aboleth, huge silver dragon, rhemorahaz, Nalfashee demon, etc... (notice I can't spell to save my life). In a way the frosty on a wooly mammoth (and Big Blue Barney) bumps those highly desired figures out of this set.

As for a Ninja and a Pirate and a Trex... That would only work if the ninja was beating up the pirate while wailing on a guitar. Hard.

But it would be totally sweet...[)]

I WANTED AN UNMOUNTED MAMMOTH, DANG IT!

In fact, as soon as I get this steaming pile, I'm going to file the stoopid Giant right off! Why oh why can't WotC give us plain old Mammoths without unsightly growths on their backs?

It's a great mini...for a frost giant leader. (note to WotC: I still want a Frost Giant Jarl, especially since we've got Snurre and the Hill Giant Chieftan)

Once an uncommon Frost Giant sculpt comes out (perhaps the Frost Giant Mauler from Frostburn?), the mammoth will be awesome.

And a uncommon Frost Giant + rare Jarl is just the thing to take a set from average to awesome. Perhaps in Unhallowed?

I totally agree with teh OP - the Tundra Scout is in the top three of my list of most desirable minis from this set.

Indeed, I'm a fan of mounted minis in general. I got a kick the other night when I looked at our gaming table and realized that of the four mounted minis that are currently released, we were using three of them. (Of course, the 1/2-ling outrider was a Gnome Hooked-Hammer wielding fighter and Snig was a 1/2-ling Druid on his large-sized wolf animal companion, but still. Mounted minis are quite useful in my book.

Actually IMHO the Tundra Scout is the best looking Huge Rare we got this set next to the Dracolich, as as a collector that's all that matters to me.

Now as far as functionality goes... we need more Frost Giant footsoldiers

The Tundra Scout is pretty darn cool ... but just because its mounted doesn't mean its what people were clamoring for.

People wanted horses and other humanoids mounted on horses, precisely because being mounted on a horse is incredibly common in medieval fantasy settings. I don't think people that wanted mounts said "mounted horses" because it more or less understood. (After all, in RL, not too many people use wooly mammoths, griffons or lizards as mounts.)

Whether or not you like the Tundra Scount (and I do), is a little irrelevant to whether you were clamoring for *humanoids mounted on horses*.

Folks around here seem to think it's pretty cool. I like it, myself, and will eventually end up with two or three. (Hopefully one of these days my players can avoid TPKing themselves and will get to a level where such an encounter is appropriate.)

The Tundra Scout is indeed a beautiful figure and it is cool (no pun) my dislike of it is only in the fact that it was chosen to be in the second Huge Set taking up a valuable Huge Slot. There are far better choices to be picked as Huges, right now, than a Frost Giant on a Mammoth.

I think most of the people who were "dying" for mounted minis wanted PC types and NPC types mounted on horses, plus maybe a goblin mounted on a worg (but the right size) and maybe PC types mounted on griffons or hippogriffs (but not doing acrobatics). But I think that because that is what I want as a DM, and I run pretty typical campaigns similar that that of many other DMs, I think.

I'm a big fan of the Tundra Scout myself... Granted, it would have been cool to have a Remorhaz or a Nalfeshnee before we got a mounted frost giant, but It's a MUCH better sculpt than the fomorian and will be a fun skirmish piece, so I'll enjoy playing it and will buy 3 more cases of the huge set that comes out in '08 to get the huges we dont have yet

Yeah, I think when people said they wanted "mounted minis," I think most of them meant "dudes on horses." Those occur a little more frequently in yer basic D&D game than frost giants on mammoths...

People may say they want a mephit, for example. I'm sure that they would be less than pleased if the first mephit figure (or even the second or third) were "Mephit Juggler on Unicycle" or perhaps "Warforged Ninja Mephit with Frickin' Laser." A lot of people want a succubus, but that whole Succubus Paladin on Vrock stuff is likely not going to make them happy. So the current crop of mounted minis is not actually what most people had in mind when they made the request, I'm betting. Cool they may be, but not what a lot of people were asking for. Thus, disappointment. Capiche?

I also agree that people would be a little more sanguine about Frostie and Horton if we had more "footsoldier" frosties to surround him with. I was pretty pumped about Snurre, but I may have been less so if there hadn't been a Fire Giant in GoL to go with him.

Hey, I *like* the Worgrider Snig -- I got more than a half-dozen. Oversized goblins on oversized worgs: The Elite Mounted Troops of the Great Khan! But I can see how many would think that some normal goblins on normal worgs would be nice.

'Learn Patience'? Ya, ya, ya how long will that take? [:D]

I like the Tundra Scout, it's just I don't want more then 1...maybe 2 it is a 'Scout' after all. If Blood War or Unhallowed gives us UC Fire/Frost Giants, the complaints will dry up somewhat. There still is the issue of other HUGEs ppl really wanted to see more then BlueBarney or Giant-riding-furball.

I do love the Huge Black it's Awesome I want it! In the end if I do end up with a bunch of them [highly unlikely] then I can always file off a couple of them to go hardcore Dragon.

What's wrong with a Mephit on a unicycle? [)]

Tundra Scout looks spiffy. I want two. An uncommon walking Frost Giant would be even better (granted, they'll have to go some to top the GoL sculpt--that sculpt is sweet!). Sadly, it'll likely be substantially less expensive to field an army of tundra scouts than the cost to obtain several GoL Frost Giants [:(]

As to Snig? A medium-sized goblin mounted on a large worg is problematic as a representation of worg riders (small goblins mounted on medium worgs). Fortunately, this problem is easy to remedy (silent wolf gobbos + timber wolves/hyenas/hunting cougars/etc).

The thing I find funniest about DQ is the number of people who loudly decried Blue Barney, who now (after seeing skirmish stats)want 2-3 Blue Barneys [:D]

I like that we're getting more and more mounted minis, as cavalry combat has been a topic of interest to me lately. I like the Sorcerer on Black Dragon (ordered a Paizo one, in fact), I think the Tundra Scout looks neat and should hopefully play well for Evil. My only complaint is the Griffon Cavalry. The pose is fine, I just hate that it's, well...an overgrown bird-lion-thing instead of a Pegasus. But with the current stats, it's not so bad; I can always hope for a good Pegasus Cavalry piece when they get around to making it.

and Bingo was his nameo

When we asked for mounted minis we didn't want all these Niche mounts. We wanted generic soldier mounted on generic horse so we could have a calavary. Tundra Scout, Talenta Halfing, Mounted blackguard, SoBD, while all cool, are too niche for the general RPG populace. And I think that's the problem.

That's even if Huge Sets survive that long [:p] Seriously, this one has left me a bit disappointed; I rather see the Huge Miniatures to become part of the Icons program and they be released one every month (which gives you the 12 of a set per year) or for those of us who voted for a Huge Set every 18-24 months then adjust accordingly to 1 every 45 days or 1 every 2 months.

Dunno how practical this would be for production costs but I think it could be a good seller ($9.99 as the SoBD Rare-mounted-better-paint-job has taght us they cost) and help the Icons line survive longer than what I am afraid it will.

edited for typos (those that I realized)

Don't get me wrong. I don't hate the Tundra Scout. I much prefer it to the Blue Dragonspawn thingie. But it is certainly not what I was thinking of when I was among those asking for mounted minis. Still, it may have it's use, though probably only one single time in a campaign.

This is something I don't understand either. The ONLY way I'm going to be mad about getting 2-3 of these guys is if I get NO Tiamats or Bahamuts.

Honestly, I'd love about 6 of this guy--but that's a bit more than I can really justify. The thought of making a Frost Giant army and having those for cavalry is enough to make a person absolutely giddy.

And I'm not someone who has been calling for mounted minis--I just happen to really like this one. I'm "ok" with the Sorcerer on the Black Dragon, and "alright" with Snig (although medium sized is certainly preferable), I could live without the Blackguard and the Halfling (but I'm not going to spend all my time griping about them) and I'm still somewhat unsure of the Griffon Rider (if only the pose were a little less dramatic), but this one is GREAT.

There are even people who have no GoL frost giant...
[:(]

LoL! Yeah I'm one of em', an uncommon frosty would make me smile all the time, even if I had not brushed my teeth in two-three months, the world would just have to suffer. [:)]

I like the Tundra Scout, and I wasn't aware that anyone hated it. UC Frost and Fire Giants would have been nice though.

My biggest problem with the mounted miniatures is how few of them have saddles. It just looks silly for them to be all or mostly all riding bareback.

I think an uncommon mounted fighter and an uncommon medium goblin worg rider were the two greatest wants for me (and definitely in that order). Now, I think I could do without any mounted figures rather than having saddleless ones and missing the most desired (uncommon armored fighter type riding a saddled horse). The proportions have been goofy on several of the mounted figures (especially the Mounted Paladin and Nightmare).

Who is a fan of the frost giant onna mammoth? I am. I'll take a hobgoblin and impale the little beast on one of those tusks.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but Frostburn and Sandstorm are two of my favorite supplemental books. Someday I hope for a cold themed set and a hot/ desert themed set. And in that cold themed set I will relish at least 2 different frost giants.

I hope the Tundra Scout is a massively hated, undesirable mini, because I'd love to pick up a six-pack of those bad boys from eBay at $10 a pop.

Why the thread title? I think the TS has received more praise than most huge rares in WoDQ. It is not something controversial, liek a mounted dragon or something [:)]

The Tundra Scout is already my favourite piece from the upcoming set. I know the highest value will probably go to the Aspect of Tiamat, but a Frost Giant on a Mammoth is my cup of tea.
