Okay, so I registered for GenCon and signed up. My question at this point is: "Now what? I do not recognize half of the games listed on these event catalogues."

So I turn to you guys for advice. What all would be fun? Is anyone looking to do some events together with a crazy like me? My schedule is as follows:

Thursday (August 10): Completely open at this time, but I have to fly in from west Texas, I will not arrive at any early hour and expect to be there in the evening instead.

Friday (August 11): Assuming my entire day will be consumed by the DDM 200-point constructed championship rounds. Is this accurate, or will I have time for other stuff?

Saturday (August 12): Super Smash Bros. videogame tournament at 10 AM, DDM 200 point constructed at 1 PM, MaxMinis Dinner at "After the Grinder" -- when does that end, roughly? Of note, is this 200 point event considered "casual play", i.e. a chance to practice before the tournament? Or is there something else going on? Also, is it even worthwhile to look into D&D RPG on this day? I haven't played it before but want to, so I'm awful curious if GenCon is a worthwhile time to do so.

Schedule Conflict on August 12: I also want to play Epic Constructed at 10 AM on this day, but that conflicts with Smash Bros. Is there any way to reconcile this, or will I just need to drop Epic from my plans?

Sunday (August 13): Finals, presuming I make it. I'm reluctant to schedule events in light of that.

August 14: Fly home immediately; I will have a long drive back to my hometown.

So in other words, I'm looking for stuff to do on the evening of the 10th, and all day on the 12th. For that matter, how is DDM casual play set up? Are there halls set aside for it? Sorry if this sounds obvious, but the event catalog doesn't answer these questions and this will be my first GenCon, so I'm trying to figure out what to do.

Of note, I am perfectly fine with "Wander the floor, trying random stuff that doesn't require registration" if such things exist. But my current understanding is all events at GenCon require registration.

Thanks in advance for any information on all this stuff.

Try to do the True Dungeon, if there are any slots left.

What is the True Dungeon, anyway? Like, a detailed analysis. I checked the event catalog and it describes itself as "NOT a LARP", yet mentions things that I would indeed put in the 'LARP' classification...although I'm probably not the best person to ask about what LARP specifically is or is not, in hindsight.

Well... I only saw it in 2003 (its first year, I believe) on a special press-only "behind the scenes" preview, but...

As I understand it, you participate in what is essentially a live-action dungeon with a small group of people (your adventuring party) and you try to make it through.

Each person takes up a role in the group (fighter, rogue, etc.) and encounters are resolved in unique ways (to disarm a trap or pick a lock, the rogue player must do a dextrous manual task, moving a bar between electrified plates -- not unlike the game of Operation). The fighter resolves attacks on a little "shuffleboard"-like setup (so people aren't actually wielding swords and LARP-ing.

It has been a great success since 2003, and I believe usually sells out (though tickets can usually still be gotten somehow).

My H/W list is not current...

Ahh, I see. So the LARP distinction refers to the use of prop weapons and 'actual combat' (or a lack thereof in True Dungeon's case)?

Wizards and clerics are given charm bead necklases each charm represents something. In the training session when the fighters are learning how to do combat the wizards learn the name of each bead then in the dungeon when they want to cast a spell the DM asks for a certain bead and the player has to present it.Depending on how close he or she gets the the actually bead determines if and how well the spell goes off for example hitting th ebead exactly makes a cure spell maximized.

You have about a 20 minute orientation where you pick your characters assign any weapons and armor, trade tokens if you have them and get to know the people in your party. Then the you are taken to the training area everyone gets a free armor and weapon token and you figure out how to do things in the dungeon. then your party is given your quest and your let loose in the 'town' to hunt for rumors, information, buy things if you have gold sell thing if you don't. Then your party enters the dungeon proper, 7 rooms each room usually has a puzzle and a monster sometimes if you solve the puzzle you don't have to fight the monster. You wear you character around your neck, a card that has all the stats and like Kithmaker said battles take place on a table top shuffle board you place your weapn token into a shuddlecock and slide it to the outline of the monster, where it lands determinds your 'to hit' roll and the number on the token facing a certain spot on the outline determines your damage.

If you die a death comes to escort you away, this year they are letting lyou stay with the party,if you want,as a ghost but you can't interfere in any way just observe.

Its tough to get tickets but if you buy generics and show up theres a small chance you will get in. The last two years, despite being sold out, there was an opening in both my parties and a generic ticket holder got in.

Hmm. Apparently sold out or nearly so, costs about 30 bucks, I'm going to have to pass on True Dungeon even though it does sound cool. Any other events folks are wanting to check out and/or recommend?

They're doing a Super Smash Brother tournament?!! Is that the original N64 version or the newer one? If it's the original version then I am definately going to have to get in on that. My friends and I have been playing that game consistently (about 30 min. average every day) since it came out. I'd love to test my skills against some others. Does it say anything about prize support?

From what I understand, True Dungeon is already fully booked. My friend wanted to partake, and said that all slots were already filled. Too bad, 'cause it sounds cool.

P-K:

I think your schedule is a bit mixed up.

Doubtofbuddha's MaxMini's dinner is Thursday night (at 9:00 pm), the MaxMinis 3rd annual Draft is Saturday night starting at 8:00. Not sure which you were intending to go too!

Until you have 3 losses you have a "chance" to make teh finals. So, that means you'll be in the championship for not less than 3 rounds. Of course, no one will make you drop, so certainly if you don't want to drop, you'll be in the championship for the majority of hte day. Last year, I dropped after 5 rounds (2-3) knowing I was toast, and wanting to get onto the floor.

I don't have anything specific to recommend, but you can keep your self DARN busy on the floor demoing games...

You'll need to have some thing scheduled, or league play, to keep busy in the evenings though.

Ain't that the truth. I swear you could spend most of your time just demoing games in the exhibition hall.

Drakkengi: It's the Gamecube version, "Super Smash Bros. Melee." I'm decidedly mid-tier at the game, but feel compelled to enter. If nothing else, to show them a thing or two about the proper use of Roy; Fire Emblem represent, dawg! ...Or however they say that stuff these days.

Pat Ellis: Huh. I knew something didn't sound right about my MaxMinis-related schedule. As far as the MaxMinis draft goes, sure, I'll stop by. Saturday evening looks open. I just need to bring two Angelfire boxes (or other similar boosters) and some sort of prize-offering, right?

Thank you for clearing that up, however; it means I can go to both.

Hmm. I think I'll have a decent schedule now. MaxMinis dinner when I arrive, Smash the next day, DDM tourney the next day, DDM casuals throughout, random exploring, and stopping by the WotC booth. I think I've got everything I need, then.

I suppose my last question is this: Where would I go for DDM casuals? I presume the events WotC lets us sign up for are mini-tournaments of some sort? I joined one of the 200-point constructed events that was six bucks. Would've joined Epic Constructed too, but it conflicts with my Smash tournament and I want some variety while I'm there, so Smash won out.

Thanks for all your input, fellas. This has been a big help!

You can always find someone to play a casual game in the Mini's hall, but of course, it will be easier to do so if your signed up for DDM League.

MaxMinis Draft: Review the 10 page thread (you can really start with the first message...) in the tournaments page: Yes, bring two 200 or 500 pt legal boosters to draft from (we are recommending no more than on WotDQ), and some kind of prize. People get all worked up about the prize, but you really shouldn't. Got a rare you don't care about? A spare Pegasus that you've repainted?!

People have just tossed a 2nd booster into the pot, or just a fist full of figures. The last two times we've done this, everyone has received at least 2, if not 3 or 4 prizes. So, if you put in a booster, your sure to get the equivalent back, if not more.

See you at Indy!
