I don't know if someone has pointed this before, if so I would like to apologize in advance. Well, here is.
Considering that mounted minis are object of discussion, some like some don't; I think it could be great if some humanoid minis were made without its base or with a detachable base, so you could use it as a rider on proper one or as a footman mini given the need. In this way, we would use some basic lines like the typical dwarf fighter, elf ranger, human paladin,... that could ride some larger minis (ie, gryphon, dragon,...) when necessary.

While I would very much like minis with interchangeable parts (weapons, shields, etc. in addition to riders and mounts), I doubt very much that we'll see it introduced with this same line of DDM figures.

Don't you think they could work as a good sailing strategy?

This sounds too complicated. Remember that stat cards are involved, and minis are supposed to look a certain way (i.e. a mini with a ranged attack should have a ranged weapon on its person).

That makes sense. I have to admit I was only thinking of rpg rather than skirmisher.

Buried deep in my old toolbox of often overlooked metal miniatures (That was all we had for 2 decades before DDM showed up) I have a fighter type mini on a horse, and standing separately as well. It was a 3 figure set. Fighter, Horse, Fighter that sits on horse (he was bow legged and could slip off the miniature if I just wanted to put a horse out on the table). It was cool because I had a blue dragon, and the bowlegged fighter could sit on that, or a large wolf miniature too. Back in those days it looked alot better than the ju-jubes we used for orcs.

Could DDM do this? Doubt it. But it would be cool if they made some mounted miniatures with detachable riders (or better yet - interchangeable riders!).

Imagine.........WOTC goes back in time to fix this........ we got a Gith on a red dragon coming out, and your campaign has your party running into a dragon mounted goblin highlord, simply detach the gith and snap on good old snig. Or put snig on the huge Black Dragon. Or Monted Drow patrol and Human Blackguard on Nightmare switch mounts (actually the nightmare would be decent without the rider). Voila! Cool! Versatile! Another marketing stratgy to get me to buy more minis!

Take it one step further, you could rebate by mail one standing figure (reposed collector's item) when you buy a case as a promo item. Send in 12 box tops and get a free figure (Gith dragon rider standing pose with separate stats). Monthly tournament kits could have cards for just the dragon by itself (like the epic cards, just non-epic).

For RPG, we only need a representation of rider on beast. I would like to see mountable figures such as horse, griffon or dragon with a round indentation on its large base, so you could slot any medium figure into the creature's space to indicate it's mounted.  The creature would have to be positioned slightly off-centre to allow room for the rider piece to stand to one side.

Admittedly, if some other company (I doubt Wizards would invest in a second line of RPG-only minis) were to come out with interchangeable-parts minis, and specifically did not attempt to compete with Wizards in the skirmish area (where they would undoubtedly lose), it might work.

I have seen these before, or at least, minis that were removable that worked size wise for the RPG even if they weren't specifically designed for it. The probalem most of them have is stability of the rider when not on the horse. Without a base, they fall over pretty easily and can be somewhat annoying. Now, if you don't care, they are great to have.

Perhaps WOTC would consider an Icon Mini for this such as the GBD or the CRD. It would be possible to mass produce a single mini with stats for the mount and rider seperatly as well as together. Something like the dragon riders from dragonlance would be an awesome choice for just such an adventure.

I can visualize a gargantuan gold dragon with a mounted paladin and a gargantuan blue dragon with a mounted blackguard. Have stats for each dragon and their respective riders and make it so that the riders can detach and be used normally. It would be amazing as an iconic box set.

Fate must have a sense of humor. Why else would you have so easily been delivered into my hands?
