Yippee!!!

November: Blood War Booster Packs

The eternal war between demons and devils spans across the multiverse, touching countless planes of existences, and now it invades booster packs for the Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures game. In addition to a number of fiendish outsiders, and other extraplanar creatures, you'll also find a healthy number of home-grown heroes and monsters that call the Material Plane home. Back in August, I showed you the Ice Devil, Marilith, and Kobold Monk. Last month, you saw the Fire Giant Forgepriest and the Blood of Vol Cultist. This month, I have two more minis (out of the set's 60) to show off -- one from the expansive world of Eberron (though the mini could be made to feel at home elsewhere easily) and another from the rooftops and decorative niches of every campaign world.

http%3A%2F%2Fi33.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fd82%2Fdjinnwing%2FDDM%2520Spoilers%2Fdx1012iw_NomadCharger.jpg

Valenar Nomad Charger -- Getting from place to place in Eberron can be an adventure in and of itself. And, few minis capture that action-packed element of play quite like this Large, Rare mounted mini. The Valenar Nomad Charger thunders across open plains and treacherous battlefields astride a stout, white and chocolate brown paint horse. The steed is equipped with a decoratively functional bridle, blanket, and saddle, and its tail and mane are bound up, out of the way. The noble simplicity of the mount is complemented by the rider's bright armor and clothing -- billowing red shirt, pants, and headcloth, overlaid with an assortment of golden mail, breastplate, and helmet. Leaning slightly forward in the saddle, for speed and in anticipation of an imminent clash, the rider seems to be clutching the reins of his horse tightly, as if restraining the mount from breaking into an all-out gallop, yet. Held comfortably in his right hand is one of the most iconic Valenar weapons -- an elegant, but deadly, double scimitar. He's holding his weapon with arm extended far behind him, prepared to make a powerful slashing attack.

http%3A%2F%2Fi33.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fd82%2Fdjinnwing%2FDDM%2520Spoilers%2Fdx1012iw_Gargoyle.jpg

Earth Element Gargoyle -- Destined to cause nervousness and paranoia amongst players until revealed to be merely decorative in use, the Earth Element Gargoyle rests comfortably atop a greenish pedestal -- in wait. This Uncommon mini seems to be a depiction of the gargoyle illustrated on page 113 of your Monster Manual, just before it springs into action. Dark red pinpoints of lights in its deep eyesockets are all that warn of a forthcoming ambush, as the rest of the mottled gray stone creature seems to be nothing more than a grotesque piece of statuary. (That's what I like best about the mini -- its ability to serve as a monster as well as dungeon dressing.) Squatting upon its perch, its clawed toes and right hand grip the ledge while its pointed tail curls tightly around the base. Extended, but not fully unfurled, the Earth Element Gargoyle's heavy-looking wings create a menacing backdrop for the "sculpture" while enabling the creature to drop quickly into a swooping attack with minimal effort.

If you check out Steve Schubert's Minis Previews articles over on theD&D Minis page and pick up Dragon magazine every month, you'll get all sorts of other D&D minis

While I'm excited for the new horse-mounted figure (I'm too new a player to have any mounted paladins), I honestly hope I don't pull more than one. It's a complicated sculpt, but compared to some of the other rares (such as the cornugon), it just doesn't hold up. Also, let's not ignore that the horseman has yet *another* double-bladed weapon. When will the madness end?

Well it's about time. Couple more weeks till we're due for November and beyond.

But man that calvary looks cool. I'd been hoping for it to be uncommon, but maybe that was an unrealistic wish.

Well, the Valenar Nomad Charger looks nice, aside from the super-lame double scimitar. If I get one, I'm cutting the back end of that thing off and it will be a human nomad horseman with a standard scimitar. I just really don't like Eberron elves, so I am biased against this mini, but it is a pretty nice sculpt overall.

Double weapons in general just remind me of "sword-chucks" from 8-bit theatre. They are just that impractical.

The charger will also be a good mini to repaint.

Valenar is OK, at last another horse-mounted mini (a tad smaller than the paladin hopefully). I'm still waiting for a more common fighter type (but not necessarily with a heavy armor) on a horse, but make it uncommon please.
Gargoyle rocks !!! Gonna be a sought-after uncommon IMO (not on the same level as the stirge, but could be close).

Meh. I'd much rather have seen a less detailed mounted human bandit as an uncommon. We need some basic mounted soldiers and rogues...

I like the Nomad Charger as a cassock (iirc) type character, I guess my 2 minimum will be enough. No reason to get more. Although maybe another 2 to "modify" that double weapon might be in order... we'll see.

The gargoyle looks great.

Sweet deal. I like the gargoyle more every time I see it. The cavalry looks amazing, but, alas, there prob will only be one, two tops to lead the charge. Id love for an army of light armored mounted bandits, or even more heavy cavalry, as long as it were an uncommon.

Half a dozen valenar nomad chargers bearing down on a party of PC will look rather impressive on the battlemat.
Also good to see WotC killing two birds with one 'stone' (excuse the pun). A skirmish miniature, and a dungeon decoration all in one. Bring on the mimics!!!

Not even remotely close.
Dont get me wrong..Gargoyles rock..and this guy is leages better than the Dragoneye one...
But a DM is only gonna need like 6 or 8 as opposed to the 12 Stirges a DM woul dwant.
Plus there is the Dragoneye Gargoyle so its not a first release like the Stirge was.

The Earth Element Gargoyle will be saught after...But Id put it in the same catagory as the Duergar Champion or any of the Uncommon Drow or the Sahaugin Ranger ect...

Both very nice minis, but I'm getting sick and tired of these silly weapons being used.Double-Swords have got to go!At least make it a Naginata or some other twin-bladed staff weapon.

Valenar Nomad Charger: Not a nice mini at all. Can´t find much use for it in my rpg campaigns.
Earth Elemental Gargoyle: Cool one. I like it a lot and being uncommon I will surely grab a couple of them which can work as normal gargoyles, or is it Large instead of medium?

First let me say the mounted figure looks well made. I do not care for Ebberon myself but that does not diminish the above fact in my eyes.

I wish it was not such a fancy piece though. A more generic mounted figure would have been better in my mind.

I must add my agreement with the disappointment over WoTC making figures with double swords. Even in a world of magic I cannot wrap my mind around someone using this weapon with any effect. The handle is to short to be used in a staff fashion and to swing it in anyway would endanger the user as much as the opponent not to mention the range of motion reduction its use would suffer. In the end it would have to be used as a spear without the length advantage a spear gives. To me even in a fantasy setting this is simply ridiculus.

The gorgoyle on the other hand is an exceptional piece all around. I have a bunch of the original but this version is so much more appealing. Unlike the Stirge though I can handle only getting 3 or 4 so I don't see this figure being chased as much as the Stirge. It is quite a bit better looking though.

Gotta agree 100%. It looks very cool but its pretty much RPG worthless. Its to fancy and exotic to be a standard soldier or bandit...and even if it did look the part its to impractical to collect them in big groups because of the rarity.

Nice.

I like mounted minis and this one is no exception. I'd have preferred a mounted human man-at-arms but I am sure one is coming at some poitn and there is no vallue in responding to this mini for what it isn't rather than what it is. I wish it was an uncommon, though, so I could get a dozern or so and excise the rider from a few.

I love the gargoyle. I love all gargoyles. They've always been one of my favourite critters. No idea why. My only complaint is that I wish it was stylistically closer to the Wayne Reynolds artwork, but that's cos I'm, a huge Wayne Reynolds fan.

I agree with Count on this... it will be in my trade bin... I'm happy people love it!

Both minis look great. Valenar minis are just cool-looking. I don't do much with Eberron, but I love the 'exotic' feel. They work very well as Silk Road traders for my OA campaign. I agree with the sentiment that something other than a double-bladed sword would be nice. Especially since wielding a double-bladed weapon from horseback isn't terribly practical. Would have been much better off with a short bow or lance.

I look forward to owning gargoyles that don't constantly tip over

But gargoyles are a lot more common encounter than a stirge aren't they? never heard of stirges before the mini came out, and have seen a lot of gargoyle encounters over the pas 8 years of D&D experience.

Very happy with both of them....

The Valenar is extremely useful for any desert tribe (I think I have like 6 of the other ones). So, I'll be going for 3+ of these. 9/10
The gargoyle, while I'm not 100% loving the sculpt.. I do appreciated the decorating aspect of it... and the uncommonness gives it a boost to ... so 8/10 for it.

It's really surprising that we're down to 5 unknown rares now.... 8 uncommons and 6 commons...
normally it's the other way around if I remember correctly.

Set is still ranking at the top for me, I'm OK if the last 5 rares suck... but the UC and C can still kill the set (or make it incredible.....) Anybody got the poster yet? :-)

But gargoyles are a lot more common encounter than a stirge aren't they? never heard of stirges before the mini came out, and have seen a lot of gargoyle encounters over the pas 8 years of D&D experience.

D.
Everyone's RPG experiances vary...But not encountering Stirges in your 8 years is a rare case indeed.
Stirges are VERY common in D&D when players are low level. They are an almost guaranteed encounter at least once for PCs between levels 1 and 3.
