| Posted By Dordledum on 10/13/2006 6:53 AM But gargoyles are a lot more common encounter than a stirge aren't they? never heard of stirges before the mini came out, and have seen a lot of gargoyle encounters over the pas 8 years of D&D experience.
D.
That may just be a preference, or lack there of, of your DM. They are a classic monster that appeared in several modules as well as the D&D comic book from years back. Not more so then a Gargoyle IMO though.
Its not really the fact that everyone would use the stirges more then the gargoyle, although some may, but the shear number of Stirges you need for an encounter. Even for a low level encounter you would probably need a dozen stirges. Thats why the flurry of people trying to pick them up to get the numbers they need for an encounter. | | | |

| Love the gargoyle. Like the Valenar Nomad Charger. I just worry thats its weapon will be all bent up like most thin weapons. Hey maybe WOTC could take some of the profit from the price increase and use it to fix that problem. Like make the weapons (spears, etc.) out of hard plastic. Also agree with everyone else double weapons are lame. | | 270+ Trades Completed (194 maxminis | 50 wizards | 29 hordelings) References: http://www.maxminis.com/Forums/tabid/104/view/topic/forumid/53/postid/435268/Default.aspx H/W List: http://www.maxminis.com/hwlist.asp?user=gausse Bad Trades: Chaotic Good (Strongbow Lone Eagle), dndonuts, Allard, ScottWallace Email: gausse2@yahoo.com

D. Everyone's RPG experiances vary...But not encountering Stirges in your 8 years is a rare case indeed. Stirges are VERY common in D&D when players are low level. They are an almost guaranteed encounter at least once for PCs between levels 1 and 3.
aha! that explains. Have played very few low level characters like that, none in a foresty environment. Most of the times, IF we start a campaign at level one, the starting location is somewhere urban.
Most of the times, our campaigns start at level 3/4 or we advance to those levels very quickly.

| | I am glad to get another horse-mounted human (well, close enough to pass). Definitely the next mounted mini I most want is a lightly armored or non-armored horse mounted human male or female (actually both, one of each) that can pass for a rogue, bard or wizard mounted on a horse. | | | |

| Love the gargoyle! Great sculpt.
Yet another mounted mini. Where do they all come from?
When I first read about this mini coming up, I did think that I might actually buy one . If I am ever to buy a mounted mini, it'll be a humanoid PC-type on a horse. But now that I have seen it, I agree with many posters here - it's just too fancy! It's a bit rubbish for RPG, IMO, so I'll give it a miss.
Still a great set, but I really hope that's the last mounted mini for a while. | | Champion of the Bodak.Knight of the Aboleth.Squire of Gnomes. Friend of (Non-Ugly) Fey. | Something to keep in mind when modifying a weapon on a mini - there are tournament rules relating to converting figures:
Conversions Conversions (customization of models) are allowed in Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures DCI-sanctioned tournaments, but must adhere to the following rules: - • The base model (the model being converted) must be a Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures model.
- • Base models must remain easily identifiable. A player must be able to tell what each model is on first glance at the battlefield.
- • Additional equipment (including weaponry) may not be added to a model if that equipment is not represented on the model’s stat card. For example, a player may not add a crossbow to a model that doesn’t have a ranged attack.
Rule 3 above says that additional equipment may not be added to a model if that equipment is not represented on the model's stat card. If you cut off part of the weapon, it is not an addition, so that modification should be fine. However, if you were to add a lance, a bow, a two handed weapon, or some other weapon, a judge might have room to disqualify you for using such a figure in a tourney setting.
This is a minor issue, but something to consider.Â

| Posted By jgsugden on 10/12/2006 3:27 PM Meh. I'd much rather have seen a less detailed mounted human bandit as an uncommon. We need some basic mounted soldiers and rogues...
I agree with wanting plainer (umm uncommon) mounted dudes/dudettes.
I like the Gargloyle.
