Anyone got advice on how to help make DDM fun to play again. At the rate I'm going I doubt I'll be around the minis scene much longer.
For the past couple of tournies the game hasn't been as fun as it used to be for me. I play competative and fun warbands, but I just can't seem to get that "I'm having fun" feeling.
It used to be win or lose I'd have fun. Then it was only winning was fun. Now it's nothing.

For me, casual games are the most fun. I have close to zero interest in tournaments now. Casual games, where different parameters are set up, and I'm not always using the most competetive bands, are more fun.

How often are you playing? Maybe some time away would help. You might try changing the format you play in, as well. The same game over and over won't help.

Outside the box games with the people you enjoy playing with.

The most fun I've had playing have been in multi-player games where we add rules to help change the look of the teams we'll bring and play against. And don't underestimate the need to play with people you enjoy being around. The scene has changed over the last year where I play and I find my self waiting to see who is going to play in a tournament before I decide if I'm going to play. This is a hobby that we participate in for fun. If the fun is lost so is the reason to show.

And if all else fails - buy a new D20 - just somthing fun about having a new D20.

Heya ShadowLordXT;

You have been around this hobby (DDM) for longer than me, I think. My DDM history is pretty much public knowledge. Even though different to your current problem, the outcome looks like it may end up the same.

All I can say, is step back from the game for a couple months. Not too far back mind you. Stay an active member of the boards. Keep in tune with happenings, and whatnot. But don't play Skirmish. Do you RPG? Put the minis to a different use. If not, then display them. Maybe have 'a' game/session every 2nd week.

Then after a couple of months, come back into the hobby fully. Play some of the 'mat rust' out of your system. Get ready to collect the next set. Get your 'tactics' back through some 'light' gaming. Then upon release of the new set, and all the innevitable tourneys/etc... hit the hobby full on.

Maybe a break is all it will take. But whatever you do... DON'T LEAVE THE HOBBY. You'll be sorry you did. Take it from someone who's been there.

Just my 2 ep.

DF

I try to play a 1000 point 8 figure limit game every now and then on Vassal (when I can find someone who will play that format).  It allows for a wider range of play.  I get tired of facing the same old 200 point Tier 1 bands.

Have you tried one of those campaign games? Where you pick a commander and they advance by winning skirmishes... iirc I think it's an "eternal campaign" or something... man, somebody jump in here, I dunno...

I was going to suggest taking a break from the game for a while, and while that may still be good advice.  But, this post caught my eye.  Teaching a newbie can be a good way to get interested again.  Running a small event with new players can be infectious.

Convince your tournament director to mix it up a little bit and try some different formats.  Try Reverse Constructed, or King of the Hill, or something else that requires you to see the game in a different way.  That always refreshes us.

Good luck!

I don't have any advice on how to make DDM fun again.  However, take a break and play something else.  Sometimes that lets you come back to a game with a new perspective.  DDM miniatures make good Mordheim warbands if you can find a group that isn't anal retentive about GW only.

We have been pretty heavy on the sanctioned events lately Shadowlord. I think that's taken a negative toll on the overall fun level of the events.

Playing Dreamblade has helped keep me energized a bit.

I also have found not paying attention to DCI rankings makes a difference.

Don't force it.

If you don't feel like playing DDM, don't do it.  Your play time is precious.  You shouldn't waste it trying to do something that has lost the new car shine.  I suggest trying something else for a while and seeing if you get the urge to return to DDM.

However, if you really want to stick it out and see if you can make the game fun again, I suggest upping the difficulty setting a bit and using suboptimal warbands that use interesting rules.  I was burning out on DDM for a short bit, but I found that playing my CG Stirge warband was really fun, even when I got creamed by a Cadaver Collector warband (AC 32 CCs are not fun...)

I'll second what Dave said!Â

Plus, definately slow down on the tournament scene for a little while.  Play some fun, casual games and just enjoy the new set, warband building, and play testing.Â

Also, spend some time doing other stuff (with wife & kids if ya got em, role playing games, painting minis, take in a movie, anything else).Â

Worst case scenario, make your cat (or dog, or other pet) play agaisnt you in a game of DDM.  They are the perfect newbie to teach.  Heck, my cat is already learning the game, he moved a Xeph warrior and Wolf right off the table.Â

I almost think the non-epic Valk is better for a Gith heavy band.  If you can get a bunch of Giths it would work better. Here is my shot at 500pt.

Valk

2x LRD

2x GDK

Gith Fighter

Orc Wizard

7 Activations = 500pts.

5 of them get +5 damage.Â

Orc Wiz and Gith Fighter have nice support spells as well as fight power.

O.k. after reading I have things to say.

I have been trying to make a home brew adventure (It rocks) but isn't finished even after a lazy year or so of working on it.
I find modules are slightly boring to play. I played DDM because it was funner for me than D&D. To make D&D fun for me I was making my home brew adventure.
I would rather DM than be a player.

None of my friends are into Dungeons and Dragons. Which means I can't really play against anyone casually. There is one person I can casually play with, but I beat him 95% of the time and we get in 2 games at the most in a normal time period. It gets boring after you keep beating someone.

There aren't really any newbies around to teach. I'm not the best at teaching anyways. Unless I use duct tape on one of my friends and stick them into a seat for 4 hours.

With new friends come new hobbies. While playing Dungeons and Dragons I had no friends who would come over and hang out. I had no one who I could hang around with at school. With anime I have friends. I feel slightly more normal.

What about talking to your local gaming store and organizing a format you'd find fun? It doesn't even have to be a legal tournament. I think the GBD or CRD scenario could be fun, with you being the dragon against any comers. Or a last man standing, just have band after band go against each other with someone else subbing in after one person is eliminated. Variety has kept a weekly Anachronism group going and it might help your malise as well.

Sounds like your problem is more of a social problem.  The friends you want to hang with the most aren't into DDM, so you feel like you would be considered weird for suggesting they play it with you.  It also sounds like most of the people you play DDM with aren't the sort of people that you'd typically hang with.

Truth is, it's most often not what you're doing that generates the most fun, but who you're doing it with.  Spend most of your energy on where you have the most fun.

Keep ballance in mind though.  Sometimes some of your hobbies are just YOUR hobbies.  I'm sure your friends are into some things that you're not into.  When they are doing/enjoying whatever that is, you play DDM.

Also, with your buddy that you beat 95% of the time, try playing bands that give him an advantage, or just handicap the points, your 200 pt warband versus his 220 pt warband.  Eventually you'll come to a ballance where the games will start going about 50-50 and you'll both have more fun (assuming his ego can stand the handicaping).
