| I was so happy when he was reishued in Dragon. It brough back so many memories. A DM during a FR game later ran that Critical Threat and man was he a deadly encounter.
Then one of our fellow adventurers thought it would be neat to put on the helmet.

| Why no love for Warduke? 1. He's a unique, so skirmishers don't need more than one. 2. He has lousy skirmish stats, so skirmishers really don't need more than zero. 3. He's a PC/NPC type created as a rare mini, which equates to low demand from RPG players as having one is nice, but no reason to have more. 4. He isn't a popular character like Elminster, so no demand boost over #3. 5. He has a poor paint job.

| Maybe I'm bias, but I love the Duke. That said, there's a difference between liking something and it having universal appeal.
He is difficult to use and costly in skirmish. He is a unique looking figure for RPG. Needing more than 1 of him is just crazy. Many were produced. But I agree with others. I love the piece as is, but although it is classic, it doesn't have the legion of new fans. Other than Drizzt, does any other unique humanoid figure sell well? I think that Drizzt's incredibly high market value actually has as much to do with it's availability as it's popularity. There weren't as many Archfiends mini's made - making them more rare than mini's in recent sets. It's the low supply coupled with the high demand that drove the price up.
Wether the Warduke or Raistlin or whatever is more popular than Drizzt is a subjective debate. Everyone has their favorites. But Drizzt's high market value alone is not indicative of popularity. If they were to rerelease another Drizzt mini it's price would not be anywhere near the original - because the supply would be greater to meet the demand.

| Like others have said...
It has limited use in rpg, and apparently isn't that good a skirmish piece. So nobody needs more than one of them. Thus a bit of oversupply, and thus the fall in pricing. Look at the Valorous Prince dude, same problem. Nobody needs more than 1, and it's a crap piece for skirmishing.
I'm personally a pretty big fan of Warduke, glad to have him, plan on using him in a rpg eventually. | | Champion of the Aspect of Gruumsh Nemesis of Gnomes and Warforged

Probably for these reasons.
from wikipedia Warduke originated as a character for the Dungeons & Dragons toy line in the 1980s. Warduke originally appeared as a D&D action figure along with such other characters as Strongheart the paladin, Elkhorn the dwarf fighter, and Zarak the half-orc assassin.
He often was seen teamed with the villanous sorcerer Kelek, and even once appeared on the Dungeons & Dragons animated TV series. In 2003, the staff of Dungeon magazine retconned Warduke into Greyhawk continuity.
First appeared as a toy Once featured in the hideous animated series retconned into Greyhawk in 2003
THE classic D&D character? I hardly think so. Lame, Lame, Lame

| Without knowing his history the only thing to love about Warduke is his sculpt which could be a little better done and painted.
The reasons he is inexpensive are already stated: a unique without outstanding skirmish qualities kills skirmish demand, being a rare humanoid N/PC type fighter lower RPG value because it can easily be substituted for, and a relatively obscure history keeps him away from fanboy collectors.
I personnally like the fellow. Although not great in skirmish he does present some option. For RPG the mini almost screams BBEG. Inspite of all of that I still wouldn't pay much for him as he is a cool mini but definitely NOT an essencial one.

I think he's a pretty good and interesting sculpt, but he's not very good in skirmish, and though I go way back with D&D ('84-5, I think), I apparently don't go back far enough to have any history with the Warduke. | | "Before God we are all equally wise - and equally foolish." - Albert Einstein Champion of Myopic Half-Orcs Winner, WBC X | |

| Naturally I completely disagree. Warduke is an awesome name. If I heard a man named Warduke was coming to waste me i'd head for the hills. The sculpt is very good. The toy is exactly why he was a classic. Coalitions against D&D had a lot to do with almost underground status in the 80's. That stupid movie with those jackasses climbing around in buildings in a trance didn't help either. If anyone knows what I'm talking about chime in. I don't know it's name.

| That would be an early Tom Hanks film, Mazes and Monster. That was one of the classic rants against D&D of the time. Alos classic around that time are the Pulling report (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BADD) and the reaction by Michael Stackpole (http://www.rpgstudies.net/stackpole/pulling_report.html).
I'm not sure about the ages of people reading this, but to put the whole thing in perspective for the younger folks out there, Pulling was the Jack Thomson of the time and D&D was blamed for everything like Grand Theft Auto is today. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| | I honestly think it was worse. I remember the rumor was back then that the D&D cartoon was pulled because Venger looked like Satan. I remember my mom being about four years behind on that one and taking my books from me in like 87. She told me i was in love with the devil and other various stupid things. Funny thing was when I was 10 my mom and my aunt bought me and my cousins the D&D basic game. They were 9 and 8 years old. We had no idea what we were doing but it was great and the toys were awesome! Then when I turned 15 I was Satan. D&D kept me out of trouble. | | Champion of Grape Juice. Its delicious. | |
