I noticed two damaged cards. One uncommon has a scratch on it as if a knife ran over it. The other (Skeletal Courser) is bend on the top.

most paintjobs look great imho, especially some of the (un)commons. look at the hobgoblin marsshall, great stuff for a common.

there are a few duds though, and the Large Gold and Otyugh come to mind,

Large Gold is very bad, on the other hand, Marshall and Kuo-Toa are magnificent.

The uncommons and commons, except for the guard of Mithril Hall, were really well done in this set as a whole. I usually look to the rares for my overall impression of a set, but the quality of the others can't be ignore in the assessment for Night Below, for me anyways.

Like every set so far, there are dogs and there are great paint jobs as well.

Funny enough though, I posted this on the WoTC site as well, anyone notice that a lot of the uncommons are superb paint jobs...better than many of the rares?

Paint I've liked so far (from the 6 boosters I've opened):

Shadow - Ok, ok...less the paint and more the clever use of clear plastic and superb sculpt, but I LOVE this mini.
Brass Golem - doubles as dungeon dressing statues.  Simple but effective paint job.
Asassin - well, its not the best paint, but its OK enough in my book.
Greater Barghest - Well done.
Greenspawn Zealot - great, clean looking mini.  It looks clean enough to be a draconic paladin.
Ice Mephit - great use of clear plastic once again.
Lady Vol - Besides the ridiculous hat this one looks great!
Mind Flayer lich - Fantastic mini, fantastic paint!
Medusa Archer - flimsy mini, but OK paint
Noble Salamander - first impression was that the paint sucked, but it grew on me a bit.
Krenshar - Superb 'fur' on the one I got.
Frost Giant Jarl - looks absolutely wicked with the 'ice' sword, though hilt of the sword kinda looks like icing on a cake.
Kuo-Toa Hunter & Kuo-Toa Whip - totally great paint on both of them.  The hunter looks a bit stoned though.
Chaos beast - a bit sloppy paint in a couple of places, but almost unnoticeable.  Looks great otherwise.

Paint I've disliked (hate is such a strong word! )

Prisoner - what is up with this guy?  could a dark wash to give him some shadows and highlights been too much trouble?
Kobold Trapmaker - great potential spoiled by a sub-par paint.
Delver Sergeant - OK paint overall till you get to the orange sherbert that shes holding...oh wait, thats the torch
Guard of Mithral Hall - I think that this dead horse has been beaten enough...
Guardian Naga - acually this one woulnd't be too bad except for the goatee.  I can see a mod/repaint in the future for this one.
Verdant Reaver - needs better highlighting and a pose that doesn't make him look like he's taking a dump.

I haven't seen all the minis yet, but those are my thoughts on the ones I have seen.  Also, anyone else notice that the bases seem to be more flimsy in this set?

I was thinking the opposite on the bases. I had zero warped ones in the case I got, so I was very happy about that. Do you mean flimsy in that they are more pliable? That may allow them to rebound better. I'll need to check it out, now.

Flimsy meaning they look much thinner to me, and less rigid.  The base on the Giant Eagle seemed especially thin.

I think the overall quality is rather good. Especially the Kuo-Toas are great and so is the Flesh Golem.
But what about the horse of the Valiant Cavalary?
It isn't painted at all.
Hooves, Mane, Tail and the poor animal has no eyes.

I've been lucky in all my minis had eyes! None of them need to pick up blind fighting the next time they can.

I have to say over all I was pretty disappointed with the quality of paint jobs on this set. In my opinion, the selection of monsters was pretty good. The sculpts, for the most part, with a few exceptions, were pretty good. But the paint was a drop in quality almost to Harbinger levels.

I had a dragon with an eye painted in its nostril instead of where it was supposed to be, minis with half the face unpainted, and several minis where the paint job was consistently really bad on every copy of that mini. The dire tiger's stripes were aweful. The gold dragon and white dragon are a disgrace to their beautiful predecesor large dragons from previous sets (bronze, red, blue, green all looked soooo much better than these). The shadow dragon looked o.k. but that was because it depended on clear plastic rather than paint. Most of the human/demihuman minis had pretty bad paint jobs. Most of the faces on such minis were just little blobs of paint with no features or smudged features. Most of the previous sets had better paint jobs on at least some of the human/demi-human minis.

There were a few pleasant surprises, such as the beserk flesh golem, dread wraith and clawborn scorrow, which I thought all looked better in person. But unfortunately these were the exception.

Yeah the Flesh Golem does look much better in person. The Sword on the dread wraith bothers me, it's too small and flimsy for his size.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

I'm very much impressed with the greater basilisk and the mind flayer lich. The paint for the basilisk's eyes, tongue, and teeth is applied very precisely, and it looks gorgeous in person. It does have some seams, but they are less conspicuous when you're holding the mini than when you're looking at it in the gallery. The lich has some delicate detail on its robe, which has a subtle metallic sheen to it that looks lovely.

I'm also pleased with the dread wraith and the shadow both look nice. The are simple in concept, the risk of screwing up in production is probably smaller than with some of the more complex minis. I love clear plastic for incorporeal undead, and I think the size of the dread wraith is just right - it's just large enough to be imposing, but not large enough to be ridiculous.

The trained carrion crawler has some nice detail as well, but the paint is a little thick on the mandibles and legs, and some of mine have gaping seams...

And gaping seams and too thick paint are two of the biggest concerns with this set. Not just the large gold dragon, but also some of the human faces - the assassin looks awful. A thick glob of tan with two black dots for eyes just don't cut it when minis such as the vampire hunter show us just how nicely it can be done!

I'm pretty happy, I just realized that in one case and two boosters, I have 4 ice mephits. This is like when I pulled 6 stirges out of 2 cases and 9 loose boosters...

I noticed this in the last 2 sets.  It's very strange.  Like in order to get quality product the uncommons are treated much better than the rares... but the price is supposed to be in the rares.  I'm personally torn between wanting better done rares or keeping the uncommons at top-notch.  One you get many of, but the other is supposed to be your prize piece from the booster.

I'm wondering if we wouldn't be as happy with the jobs if the uncommons were rares. As I'm doing a mental once over, a lot of them have very simple paint jobs, usually with few colors. Would people complain about the Brass Golem if it was a rare, or be even less wowed by it? Does being an uncommon lower our expectations so we're happier when we se good results? Hmm....

I wasn't disapointed with the paint quality in this set - but I wasn't blown away by it either. As always some pieces are better quality than others. I would consider inconsistency to be one of DDM's biggest problems - unfortunately it's one that we've gotten used to.

Funny, I tend to disagree with most people here.  I think some of the minis here have great paint jobs compared to previous sets.  The 2 Kuo-Toas are fantastic, especially for Commons and Uncommons.  Overall I found the paint jobs on the Commons and Uncommons to be pretty good.  Maybe I just got lucky with my minis.

I was a little unsure about the Large White Dragon after seeing it in the gallery but in person it looked a lot better to me.  On the other hand, the Large Shadow Dragon that I saw didn't seem to be as good as the gallery shot (not enough paint).  I haven't seen the Gold so I can't comment on that one.

Overall I am happy with the paint standard.  On a slightly related note, I even managed to get a Maralith today that's eyes and mouth were painted in the right spots.  :-)

goofiest paint job I got was my 'Cockeyed Naga'.  The rest of him was painted quite neatly, and everything was as it should.  He was just looking up and to the right as well as looking straight forward.  And I like to look at that as talent as opposed to bad paint.  I did really like the exarch's armor.  That was a really cool effect, similar to the hexblade's.  Kind of an oxblood leather color.  Horribly impressed with Raistlin.  Liked Vol a lot, not much problem there.  Hierophant's face....  Well, it could stand to improve (something I plan to remedy, or attempt to, before I can outwardly mock the faces.  If I can't do a better job than wizards, what's the point of complaining, right?  The entity of WotC would then be allowed to walk up to me and say "better than you can do!" and slap me with a wrackspawn.)  I really liked kalashtar's paint job, and sculpt, they did a great job on her.  Earth mephit (for being a pile of rocks) was pretty good, and I liked it a whole bunch.  The drow came out different in a few sculpts, and the spider wasn't quite on the shield right on all of them, but the one that was looked awesome.  Gold dragon had a couple splotches, but none were big enough to deem a full-on repaint, in my eyes.  I personally like the otyugh, due to the lowered tentacle count.  But that one's understandable, with more tentacles, it wouldn't have fit in the box, or would have been easy to pick out of the shelves (I avoided quite a bit of maugs, even after they took off his "sword").  Loviatar was really cool, though they set her "feminine features" a bit low on her chest.  Kind of akwardly low if you ask me.  Jarl was a great sculpt, I didn't get any defect whatsoever that most people seem to be complaining about, and I love the piece all around.  Wulfgar had a weird blotch of flesh tone on his cloak, but I'm not too worried with the better paint job coming out in september in a set I'm buying if nothing else for the garg white.  Mind flayer lich turned out to be an awesome paint job, and I plan on getting a 2nd one.  I never got a valiant or a skeletal courser, so I can't really comment on those, as I haven't even played against them (I did see an awesome mod of a rearing courser, made me want like 8 of them).  I did pick up a shadowbane at my FLGS, and it looked great.  Just what I'd want from a humanoid in full plate with a helmet   I really dug the banebreak, enough that I went and got 2.  I like the noble salamander, to an extent.  The salamander's paint job wasn't horrible, and I kind of liked it.  Just thought I'd throw my thoughts on the set out.  On a side note, however: as far as faces went, at least comparatively to other sets, this was not my favorite.  The wild mage's face wasn't HORRIBLE, it just didn't strike me as good as like dragonmark heir or kalashtar bodyguard.  I'm not sure what pressed the mush-faces out, but like I said, if I can't resculpt/repaint something, I have zero grounds to complain.  I hope at least one person found that interesting

By the way, as far as the shadow goes, I did something kind of cool for once.  I had a bunch extra, so I decided to fiddle with a shadow.  I bent the long arm back at the "elbow" completely, and pinched it backward.  When I let it go, it bent to where it was reaching out instead of cradling himself.  Did the same thing with the other arm and it worked to an extent.  Don't know if anyone's interested, but if you have a shadow on its way to the waste bin, try it out (or the safer route of warm water bending the arm, this way was instant gratification for me).  It's not anything super amazing, but it improved the quality of the sculpt overall for me, and I thought it looked kind of cool for just bending an arm a bit.  Maybe I'm just proud I didn't break something for once!

no, not shadow dragons.  And I'm up to over 8 shadows, so they're getting retired to RPG.  However, if someone doesn't play RPG, I'm not sure what they would have done with their overs.

The more I get of the set the happier I am. I did just get a gold dragon, and in that one I can see what some are saying although it looks okay to me. I've been wowed by the scorrow for the color and shading. The purple just stands out and looks great.

I think just the range of color in this set has been great. Even if the execution on some individual pieces have had problems, the set as a whole has been very vibrant.

The only bad thing I have found in my Night Below paint jobs so far is it looks like a seagull was flying over Wulfgar recently.  My mini of him has a white splat mark on his shoe!Â
