For me it's I love to skrimish and DDM offers me a chess like game with completely inter changable pieces the mental effort to try and find the best synergies that work well together aside from this I also collect the sets just to have them because they look cool.

I however don't collect so at some point I can get out and have this cost me nothing IMHO that's a fools game but that being said one of my dreams is to one day open a game store so my collection could be ready made stock items for said store but the enjoyment I get from playing DDM and working out synergies is priceless.

Just my 2cents

I collect so as to have all the critters I want on-hand for D&D games. I also stopped collecting complete sets since the number of miniatures that I need to fill RPG gaps is diminishing exponentially per set (most humanoids are no longer necessary or even very useful--you can have too many "human in plate").

Same here...I collect for rpg use. I play the very occasional skirmish game, and I've been to a prerelease or two, but I only seek out minis that will be useful in my campaigns.

RPG use is the key for me, it's what brought me into the game. I still like painting minis for when I play a PC but as a DM hordes of cheep plastic minis can't be beat.

When I first started collecting years ago it was mostly for the skirmish aspect of it and I found it was a great bonus to be able to have some minis on hand when we needed them for RPG. Now many sets latter I find myself mostly collecting for RPG, not even attempting to complete sets anymore and I've definitely lost touch with the skirmish side. There are just too many choices now for warband selection that I feel like I'm going to have a meltdown if I try to put together a warband.

I still like sealed events and random generated warbands though.

I enjoy collecting in general - hockey cards, stamps, coins, hi-fi equipment, DDM. I like both the skirmish game and RPG. And now I've developed this weird obsession for online trading. I also collect/online trade to help local people finish their sets.

Skirmish and RPG mostly.  I have an addictive personality, so I collect them just for collecting sake too, but it's a lesser reason than Skirmish and RPG.  Fortunately my FLGS has a fairly healthy group of skirmishers so I get to play often.  I haven't not been in or running at least one RPG at any given time for the past decade, so they're really useful in RPG use too!

My motivation for collecting has changed since I started. When I first started it was mostly for skirmish. And some for RPG, but that wasn't as important as skirmishing. Later, I got hooked on collecting. Now, I don't skirmish at all. I collect mostly for RPG and some for just collecting. But skirmish is now irrelevant to me.

I,m a competitive DDM player.I,m always trying to get all the tier 1 warbands in any faction. My favourite faction is LG but I collect all the others too.I rarely play RPG campaings but, when I do that, minis are an absolutely must (harbinger,s main characters are unvaluable).

From the minute the said prepainted minis I was hooked because I needed stuff like that for games. Although I didn't initially think I was going to want to have them all, it quickly also became a collection I wanted to have complete sets of.

I bought my first batch of Harbingers not really expecting much. I knew nothing about the DDM line. When I got them in the mail, I was hooked right away. They were so cool to use for my RPG game. So I started buying more. Then I got the itch and just had to start collecting all the sets. Once I completed every set, I missed the excitement of collecting them so I began collecting whatever quantity an adventure I might run called for, and also whatever quantity the Monster Manuals say the creatures appear in under the organization description.

I started collecting for RPG - now about 5 months later, I have all the RPG monsters and figs I could want with the exception of a few iconic monsters (some giants and dragons). I'm still collecting to get all the ones I think I might have a use for in a game - barely skirmish at all, and I have no plans to ever try to collect an entire set...

RPG for me.  I've played the skirmish game several times and while i enjoy it I always keep thinking "Boy I wonder what the story is behind that warband.".  To me the minis are a part of the RPG experience and have been since I started with D&D - 20something years ago.  I still try to paint on occasion but I am the slowest painter you've never met and it can take me weeks of work to produce even the simplest of painted minis.

I started for RPG purposes and played the skirmish game somewhat. As real life made more demands on my time I've almost entirely stopped playing the skirmish game. For a while there I was really into the collector aspect but that's since waned as I've completed my collection. To be perfectly honest I'm not excited about DDM since I've completed all the sets - I have all I need for RPG, don't skirmish anymore and I no longer have the excitement of hunting down a mini that I need to complete a set. My lack of excitement has manifested itself in not visiting these boards as often and not bothering to complete Night Below yet. I know that it won't be difficult to get the mini's I'm missing.

Basically the reason I collect mini's at this point is that I have all the other ones - I should get the new ones too.

When Harbinger was first announced I quickly realised that this was what I had been waiting for since 1982 when I started RPGing... I collect foremost for RPG purposes, but also because I like "having one of everything"... This has started to apply to all promos, repaints and special give-aways etc as well, which quickly is becoming very costly...

If voting could really change things, it would be illegal.

I first started collecting around the time of Dragoneye/Archfiends, and did so for RPG purposes. There was a point before Angelfire when I was just a few from having complete sets, but it was just too expensive for me to do this AND have multiples of rares for RPG. I'm at the point now where I have plenty of minis to represent most situations, but I'll keep buying as long as there are MM1 minis yet to be made (and townsfolk!).

As a DM, I only collect the pieces I need for RPG at the time. I've never felt compelled to collect an entire set just because it's there. The joy that others feel from simply collecting continues to elude me. My wallet and I thank god for that.
Also, I'm not laboring under the illusion that these toys are an investment of any kind. As far as I'm concerned, all the minis in my closet are worth exactly what I payed for them. Probably much less than that, now that I think about it.

Nicely put. This sums up how I felt about DDM. I wish I could have bought them as a kid.

I buy only for RPG, and I don't feel the need to buy every mini. I buy singles, and only the minis I think I might actually use.

At the height of my collecting I was a 2-3 case per set addict. I loved the plasticrack and couldn't get enough. That monkey was firmly attached to my back. Couldn't wait to get my next fix.

Boy, times they sure do change....

Blood War was the last set I bought and that was only because Buy.com had that fantastic deal with google checkout. I was getting boosters shipped to me for something like $6 and change per booster.

I was a closet skirmishers and bought mainly for RPG purposes.

There's lots of reasons why I don't buy anymore. Reasons that range from less desirable (for me) set composition to diminishing desire for the product to a desire to put the money formally spent on minis towards other hobbies to real life concerns.

It was a fun rise for me but I'm done now. Ironically I can't quit the community though. Still addicted in one way I guess.

I started for RPG and after a while figured I may as well learn the skirmish game. When I found Maxminis aroud Underdark, I became the worst type...Skimisher/RPGer/collector hybrid...That quickly went away as I began to question why I would want a Dromite or Phoelarch. I had completed several sets, but at present I don't think I have any complete. My interest has waxed and waned some here and there, with UH being the low and BW being the high. Currently resting somewhere in the middle, and wondering which way DoD will push me.

The year: 1994. From out of space comes a runaway planet, hurtling between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction! Man's civilization is cast in ruin!
Two thousand years later, Earth is reborn...
A strange new world rises from the old: a world of savagery, super science, and sorcery. But one man bursts his bonds to fight for justice! With his companions Ookla the Mok and Princess Ariel, he pits his strength, his courage, and his fabulous Sunsword against the forces of evil.
He is Thundarr, the Barbarian!

I pretty much collect for rpg use.  Both DDM and SWM have found their way into Exalted, Call of Cthulhu, Runequest and D&D games I've played in or run.

We collect because part of the WotC production process is to spray a light coating of crack cocaine on the miniatures and their stat cards. Even if you keep the miniature bagged, you pick up some of the crack off the stat card and experience a high. Then, after a couple of day (sometimes less), you body demands MORE MINIS.

It's elementary. We hardly needed 32 posts to figure this out. Sheesh.

I purchased my first Harbinger with no expectations, thinking of it as another board like game for the guys and I to play on ocasion.  So skirmish only dabbler soon became collector with Archfiends as I strove to get my Drizzt and was filling in the set.  By Abberations I realized the line wasn't going away and strove to get multiples for future RPG games.  Haven't roleplayed much since minis inception, but I'll be ready.

I collect Star Wars miniatures mainly, playing both the skirish game and RPG. I picked up a few Harbinger boosters, but just packed them away until a few moths back. I got interested again at the same time my group decided to play the D&D RPG. So I bought more minis even buying a case of Unhallowed & Dragon Queen.

I've only ever played the DDM game once, so I am just buying the minis for RPG use.

I've not completed any DDM sets, and don't really have any interest in doing so. I just buy the minis I like and ones I think will fit into our RPG. I've only bought a couple of Night Below because there is nothing else there that I want. I have been buying the gargatuan Dragons, they look great!
