So i go to Penny Arcade Expo in seattle, close to where i live for the"OMG first qualifier of '08!" and how many people are there? 10? 20? 30?  nope.  4.  Thats not a typo.  Top 2 qualify.  the other 3 are

Sega Representitive Elliot
Average Minis Player Josh
and Just Learned The Game Yesterday Trevor.

we decided to play round robin,i thought it was going to be a cakewalk. it wasnt so.

My Rares:
Excarh of Tyranny
skeletal Courser

blech

my warband:
Excarch
Champion of Dol Dorn
GCMS (i had no better commanders lol)
Gnoll Claw Fighter
Halfling Tombseeker
Carnage Demon
Prisoner
Skeltal Courser

on the Mushroom Caverns.

First Match:
against Josh
Guardian Naga
Shadowbane Inquisitor
Champion of Dol Dorn
2x GMCS

i won map. i was careful setting up so he couldnt lightning bolt me, and yet he still did.  Excarch took full damage.  To do this he had to put his nga in the front and risk combat against it.  My Champ ended up escorting the prioner and helping sneak atack the shadowbane.  My excarh died early to the death burst of the naga and so it was a close match ending up with Dorn on dorn combbat.  what saved me is i also had the prisoner left.  close match there.

2nd match:
Against Elliot
Lovatier
Vandria
Babau
Digester Prisoner

if you have ever read an of my tournament reports i dont like to talk about times i get slaughtered

3rd match:
Against Trevor
Wulfgar
MFL
Delver Seargent
Gnoll
Krenshar

OMG this was close.  He had what IMHO is the best sealed rare pulls for Night Below.  My Exarch and Dorn went together, both ontinually saving against paralyze, but wulfgar critted three times anyway.  ouch.  i killed off the rest of his band, and eventually it got down to where if i could run i could win.  but i counted my suares wrong and so went the wrong way and SQUISH! i lost.

so i was 1-2.  so was trevor andJosh.  we had all beaten eachother in a sort of triangle while elliot went 3-0.  we were all tied with all the possible tiebreakers.  so we all tied for 2nd place and we all got invites.  crazy huh?

i got some nice swag and had  lot of fun at the con!

see ya guys later,
van.

Wow, sounds like a PAX early qualifier was a bad idea.

Hey Van,

Nice report. This is Elliott (Feathers).

Was talking to Ian earlier about it before the game started. He says Seattle has typically bad tournament turnout. The biggest ever turnout was 16 once, and 14 were out of state. He says people like to play, and some minis guys in the area beg for qualifiers, but then no one shows up.

At the beginning, there was supposed to be 6, with one of the 6 being a WotC person who would join to prevent any byes. But the 5th player didnt show and the WotC guy thus dropped.

I think part of the problem is PAX is known as a videogame con, not a tabletop con. The word probably didn't get out there, so not a lot knew about it. I know that I would not have gone if I wasnt already there for work. As it was, I only managed to steal away the time necessary to play in the qualifier. Unfortunately, I wont be able to play tomorrow for some League or Constructed play. But again, the turnout would probably be like 2-4 guys.

For my troubles, I won a Gargantuan Blue Dragon.

It was great that everyone qualified. I thought that was cool.

Digester was definitely my MVP for the games I played in. Always made up his points and then some. The Spd 9 is insane for grabbing victory points, running around for flanks, and getting into the soft spots of enemy warbands. The breath weapon and the auto acid dmg are awesome. And then throw in 70 hp and you have a real winner. I've pulled it twice before in other Limited events, and decided to run him this time. He was really good.

The Babau is also strong, and Vandria is a nice commander. She didnt do much though in any of my games except a little healing and some searing lights. But the searing lights against Undead were great.

Thanks for the game, and the trades, Van. =D

Actually, the constructed qualifier in Lacy earlier this year had 22 players.

Wow, I think it may have been a bit too close to GenCon, and not very well publicized.

Pax, however, is awesome. I'm hoping to go in the next few years...
