Hello all!

Well, time for my regular feature, checking in on how well WotC is doing at providing minis for those of us who play conjurors.  Remember, being a conjuror lets you play with minis like a DM, but you get to loot like a PC!  Okay, here we go:

Critters in bold have a mini for them
Critters in italics have a reasonable proxy (proxy in parentheses -- suggestions welcome)
Aquatic critters have been omitted

SM I

S Celestial dog                                   Â

T Celestial owl

S Celestial giant fire beetle

S Celestial badger

T Celestial monkey

S Fiendish dire rat

T Fiendish raven

M Fiendish monstrous centipede

S Fiendish monstrous scorpion

T Fiendish hawk

S Fiendish monstrous spider

S Fiendish snake, viper

Comment:  This is a rough category, since most of the monsters are tiny or small.  But a glaring omission is, and has been for years, the Medium Monstrous Centipede.  C'mon, guys, 1st level characters have been plagued by these critters since the Gygaxian era!  We need this mini!

SM II

M Celestial giant bee

M Celestial giant bombardier beetle

M Celestial riding dog (HA Wolf)

S Celestial eagle

Lemure

Fiendish wolf Â(Timber Wolf)

L Fiendish monstrous centipedeÂ(Carrion Crawler)

M Fiendish monstrous scorpion

M Fiendish monstrous spider (Spider of Lolth)

M Fiendish snake, viper

Comment:  Lots of OK proxies here.  I would like to see the Bombardier Beetle made into a mini, if anything to see the description of the "special attack" on the card.  Maybe the Medium Monstrous Scorpion would be more apropos for Desert of Desolation.

SM III

Celestial black bear

Celestial bison

Celestial dire badger

Celestial hippogriff

Elemental, Small

          ÂAir (Air Mephit)

          ÂEarth (Earth Mephit)

          ÂFire

          ÂWater (Ice Mephit)

Fiendish ape (Dire Ape)

Fiendish dire weasel

Hell hound

M Fiendish snake, constrictor

Fiendish boar

Fiendish dire bat

H Fiendish monstrous centipede (Purple Worm)

Fiendish crocodile (Monitor Lizard)

Dretch

Fiendish snake, Large viper (Bright Naga, Dark Naga)

M Fiendish wolverine

Comment:  This list is nicely filled out, but geez Marie, where's the Celestial Bison?  That is Meat Shield Numero Uno for mid-level conjurors, although I prefer the Huge Centipede for impressing the rubes.  When you really need a door knocked down or a bad guy trampled, you call 1-800-GO-BISON.  We've found some toy proxies, but it's always nice to find the actual mini.

More to come.

Couldn't the following proxys also be used:

Celestial dog: wolf or hyena
Celestial owl: giant owl
Celestail badger: dire badger
...

The way i see it, if a purple worm can proxy for a fiendish monstrous centipede, why couldn't "other" versions of a same animal be used to proxy too? I'm curious as to why you don't believe those to be suitable proxies.

It's a size issue. A size L Giant Owl just doesn't look right standing in for a Tiny owl. A Stirge or Quasit would work better. One could use the Dire Badger, I suppose, for a regular badger, and still only take up one square, but it messes with my Feng Shui. As always, your mileage may vary. I think the Purple Worm conveys the "holy crap!" factor the Huge Centipede should invoke. :-)

It seems entirely logical to me to use a Gorgon in place of the Bison. Both are large, both have similar construction.

I agree. Size is important in the game mechanics, so I find it helpful for the mini to be the right size. Next, I want it to have some basic features in common - e.g. winged, or humanoid, etc. I'd certainly use a stirge for an owl.... but I'd much rather have an owl . Personally, I'd find a quasit much less satisfactory as an owl proxy - but at least it would indicate the right size. It would do a fair job as a monkey. Yep.

Oh - and nice work on the thread. Great to see how the Monster Summoning lists are doing.

The real disappointment is list I. When you start to play your brand new character, and cast your very first summons, it'd be great to actually put some of the right minis out on the table. It's disappointing to hear "Oh, I don't have anything that looks like that - hmm, not in the right size. But wait until you are much higher level - then you can use minis that really do represent the creatures you're summoning". That's a downer.

i personally see these list getting re-vamped in 4.0

i would like to summon "monsters" with Summon Monster I-IX spells instead of just Outsiders

we have Summon Undead, why not Summon Outsider I-IX, Summon Giant I-IX, Summon Aberration I-IX, Summon Magical Beast I-IX, etc.
