| Raking the minis on a 1-5 scale; 1 is poor, 2 is mediocre, 3 is meh, 4 is cool, 5 is fabulous.
Rank 5, the fabulous
Animated Statue - I can use these in spades, for statues and weaker golems. We've needed a fig like this for quite some time Feral Troll - This cat looks like he just crawled out from under the bridge and wants some billy goat for breakfast. Evocative. Ettercop Websinner - This guy too, reminds me of the brothers grimm or Hans Christian Andersen. Come into my parlor... My Uncommon Runner-up Farmer -- A. He's a farmer. B. He's holding the pig grenade. C. He's about to fight the feral troll to rescue his daughter with a pruning hook. D. He's got a cleaver tucked into his belt. The production mini BETTER have all those colors. He's my common winner in the set. Flame Snake -- Superuseful. It is going to be fun to try and repaint these. Merchant Guard -- A useful actually tought looking common fighter. Ogre Brute -- a lovely mini full of character. Sahuagin -- Nice. Mind your fingers. Sort of cuddly in a slimy, scaly, dangerous way.  My uncommon winner. Sahuagin Baron -- As far as minis go, this guy is a heart breaker. He's my rare winner in the set. I like the trend of giving us a common/uncommon classic and then a leader for them (like with the Kuo-Toa and Whip from the last set. My faves from there...) Snake Tongue Cultist -- I love it. It will be useful and it is evocative. My common runner-up. Sphinx -- A lovely mini and useful to boot. My rare runner up. Umberhulk Delver -- If he blitzes, I am so getting out of the way. The QB can eat that for all I care, rolex for Christmas or not. Gelatinous Cube -- Now, make a mimic for us to put inside of it.
Rank 4, the cool
Blade Spider - If it had been uncommon, it might have been cool Black Woods Dryad -- The reason I haven't rated this figure lower is because the sulpt will be useful even if it isn't the best. This seems to follow in the footsteps of the recent "dryads" and "branch wraiths" released by GW for their Wood Elf army. Yaun-ti Malison -- The coloring is bit off, but I can always use more of these guys. Drider -- Try not to get yourself banned, okay? Demon Web Swarm/Rot Scarab Swarm -- useful. Fire Archon -- If the weapons had been larger, I would have moved it up to Rank 5, as it is they look goofy. Large Fire Elemental -- It has a cool sense of flow, of movement. Human cleric of Bahamut -- I think this is a pretty cool pose, not the typically static pose used by DDM for PC figs. Manticore Sniper -- Nice pose. Useful fig. Nightmare -- Very cool pose. Interesting Armor. 8P Naga -- A useful creature. Unfortunately, right on the heels of the Guardian Naga, the Bone Naga, and the Dark Naga. He normally would have been a three, but my snake themed cult of the possessed warband for Mordheim will find use for him. Rage Drake -- Cool pose. Looks to be useful. Shadow Mastiff -- Nicely executed. Will be a helpful fig for me and many many others. Tiefling Cleric -- Very Menacing. I like it. I'm glad to see the Tieflings starting to get a unified look. Tiefling Rogue -- Fun sculpt. Useful for planar games. Yaun-ti Champion of Zehir -- Cool sculpt. I can't get enough of these guys.Â
Rank 3, the meh
Capricous Copper Dragon -- Static pose on a non-evil dragon. Cyclops -- I would have liked the eye to be bigger. The Frost Giant Jarl, Beholder, and Horned Devil set the bar for the rares, imo, and this guy hasn't hit it. Bruenor Battlehammer -- is just another dwarf warrior. Drow Blade Master -- Meh. Drow Pider Priestess -- Meh meh. Dwarf Brauler -- Might be a good double for a dwarf monk. Dwarf Maulfighter -- When you carry around a hammer that friggin' big, the whole world must look like a nail. Elf Conjurer -- It looks like he is on the worship team. Guardian Mummy -- This is a much better looking mummy than they've ever done. Unfortunately, that's not Macetail Behemoth -- I have a bunch of plastic dinosaurs already. Mercenary General -- Yet another PC rare. Osyluth -- I like the bulbously eyed skull headed version better. Shrieking Harpy -- usful, but not exciting. Bladetusk Boar -- he's fun, but not moving.
Rank 2, the mediocre
Astrak Stalker -- Unattractive and bland. Angel of Vengeance -- Odd.  Is this a refugee from a dreamblade set yet to be announced? Shard Skeleton -- uninspired. Cliff Walk Archer -- After the Ranger from Bloodwar, do we ever need to see another archer ever again? Eternal Blade -- Yay. Another random fighter in shiny random armor. Halfling Rogue -- Triple Meh. Militia Archer -- After the Ranger from Bloodwar, do we really need a set with two archers in it? Ravenous Ghoul -- Nah. They've done better. Spined Devil -- Looks like something from pokemon. Warhorse -- I just don't think we needed this.Â
Rank 1, the poor
Bar=lgura -- Simply put, I cannot believe this is a rare. The sculpt looks much less interesting and complex than the Hill Giant Barbarian from WD. The textures look about as complex as the Dire Bear's.  Don't like it at all. Blood of Vol Fanatic -- The principle problem here is that he is a really ugly common. I am going to get mounds of these and not want them. If the weapon were normal, he might find more utility. Visejaw Croc. -- Twenty-five cents. Toy store.  'Nough said.   Halfling Enchanter -- no no no. Shaddar Kai Assassin -- No use for a goofy looking humanoid with a goofy looking weapon. Werewolf Champion -- Seriously. Was this guy a gnoll common at one point? Like "Gnoll Mercenary" or something?Â
Picking my top 5's were fun. In each category, two were similar enough that they seemed to merit a tie.

| The set is OK, not as good as BW but better than many others (WD, Dragoneye, DK come to mind). What saves it is the commons : almost all of them are excellent. Best commons set ever IMO. The rares are OK, the uncommons are so-so.

| It's cool to see where we agree on the best and worst:
Best: Animated Statue Farmer Sphinx Demonweb Swarm Snake Tongue Cultist
On second thought I would move the Large Fire Elemental and the Shadow Mastiff to 5 as well.
Worst:
Shadar-kai ASsassin.
I wonder what other people think. Hint hint. | | Champion of the Froghemoth Knight of Beholder-Kin Squire of Low-Level uniques | |

| Rating as you did and keeping in mind, that I will only order two rares and buy 3-5 boosters; hoping to trade for the Sahuagin Baron:
5: *Bruenor Battlehammer - The sculpt could have been better, but to get him at all is great for me. Nice stats as well. *Elf Conjurer - Wow. If the actual mini will be looking close that good in detail, this is going to be a top choice for PCs.
4: *Sahuagin Baron - Looks imposing and has chieftain written all over him. I love the combination of Sahuagin and the Baron in one set - just like the Kuo Toas in Night Below. Keep this going, Wizards!!! *Sahuagin - See above. Just wish they were common. Will be hard to afford more than 4 or 5 of them for me. *Warhorse - Much better looking than the repaint. Wish they came in different colours. Very nice for every RPG campaign. *Farmer - Like Bruenor: The sculpt could have been better (Pig?), but to get one at all is great. *Merchant Guard - This is how I envision the city guard of any civilized medieval fantasy city. *Dwarf Mauler - One of our players plays a hammer-wielding dwarf. Might like him. Nice stats as well. *Ogre Brute - Just looks mean and ... like an ogre. *Large Fire Elemental - So many possibilities to use them.
3: *Drow Blademaster - Looks good. Wish he was uncommon and the Sahuagin common, though. *Drow Spider Priestess - Nice. Never could have afforded the Drow Cleric. Sculpt looks ok. *Nightmare - Very good looking. Not sure if useful, but very nice looking. *Astral Stalker - Scary looking. Will find use for him. *Guardian Mummy - Just belongs with all those zombies and skeletons. Nice. *Thundertusk Boar - Very useful for dwarven PCs. *Halfling Enchanter - Nice PC if you like to play a halfling wizard/sorcerer. *Sphinx - Looks all right. *Gelatinous Cube - Wish it was uncommon. *Drider - Don't have one. Wouldn't mind to pull it. *Snaketongue Cultist - I have a couple of Blood of Vol Cultists, but this mini is still good looking and useful. *Animated Statue - I use all that stuff from Hero Quest, but this statue will find some roles in dungeons. *Dwarf Brawler - Useful but disappointing sculpt/paint.
2: *Feral Troll - I prefer the Troll Slasher. *Rage Drake - Sounds ok for the skirmish game. That's about it. *Ravenous Ghoul - Don't really need another. *Umber Hulk Delver - If I could more than one - ok. But since it's a rare, I can't afford it. *Shadow Mastif - Will find use for him. But nothing I would miss in exchange for a rust monster or others. *Mercenary General - Sounds very interesting skirmish stats wise. No reason to get him from a RPG perspective. *Eternal Blade - I love elves. This one's stats are amazing. *Human Cleric of Bahamut - If he had a different weapon, I'd put him to 3 or even 4.
1: *Rot Scarab Swarm - Could use one or two, but I'd rather pull some other uncommon. *Demonweb Swarm - See above. *Angel of Vengeance - Is this thing D&D? *Macetail Behemoth - This was my brother's favourite dino. No use for me in D&D though. *Militia Archer - Just doesn't look good to me. *Black Woods Dryad - Don't no what to say exactly. *Cliffwalk Archer - Don't like those shapeshifters. Very strange sculpt. Anyone ever fired a bow like that? *Halfling Rogue - Just enough halflings for me to use as rogues. *Visejaw Crocodile - Working in a zoo, I'm looking at crocs daily. This is by far the ugliest ever seen. *Capricious Copper Dragon - Telling by his massive head he must be related to the Guard of Mithral Hall. Just nothing compared to the "old" Copper Dragon. *Tiefling Cleric - Yuck! *Tiefling Rogue - Yuck and yuck. *Blood of Vol Fanatic - I wonder if this is the worst looking mini ever made in D&D. *Manticore Sniper - Just don't like the sculpt and won't find any use for him. *Osyluth - I'm just afraid to pull him out of my boosters, while someone next to me gets the Sahuagin Baron. *Shadar-Kai Assassin - In direct competition of the award mentioned for the Blood of Vol Fanatic. *Spined Devil - Like him for providing a 4th Edition stat card as promo. *Blade Spider - Simply don't need it. *Boneshard Skeleton - So many skeletons already. This just doesn't say "I'm special." to me. *Cyclops - Iconic? Yes. Good looking? No. *Flame Snake - Just no use for a medium sized snake. *Naga - This is another one mini I hope so much not to pull. Don't like the sculpt, don't like nagas. *Bar-Lgura - My warape is enough for me. *Ettercap Webspinner - Anyone want one? *Shrieking Harpy - Absolutely no use for him. And the old female harpy just looks better in my opinion. *Wer Wolf Champion - Please. Don't hide in one of my boosters! *Yuan-Ti Malison - Red yuan-ti? No thanks. *Yuan-Ti Champion of Zehir - Wouldn't mind to miss on him. *Fire Archon - The worst mini in the whole set. Just like the Aspect of Loviatar in Night Below. Pulled two of those....

| Hi Everyone,
This is always a fun exercise!
(Again 5 best to 1 worst)
5
Cyclops R Yeah! Sure! The eye could have been more pronounced, but it is a Cyclops in armor too. He will look good on my gaming table. Drider R A bit different look for one of the classic monster of the Underdark. Drow Blademaster C I can not believe they made him a Common. I will get a ton of these. This is great! Feral Troll R It is a great looking fig. I don't think I would have called him Feral though, maybe a Terrible Troll or something. Farmer C This is already a classic in my book. The meat cleaver is such a plus. I still want to see the stats on the Pig Toss. Guardian Mummy U The best Mummy sculpt yet and an Uncommon to boot. Human Cleric of Bahamut U What a great pose! If a player don't pick this for a character, then I will design a great NPC behind this DDM. Osyluth R It took me a while, but I am beginning to like this menacing looking devil. Sahuagin U I need more of these! The party spends a lot of time at sea in my campaign. Sahuagin Baron R Wow! I get a Sahuagin leader too! I can't wait to set up this encounter. Sphinx R Finally, another MM classic has made it to the DDMs. Umber Hulk Devler R The real prize in the set. It is a better sculpt than the Harbinger and it was time for a resculpt.
4
Blade Spider R It looks larger than the Dragoneye Large Spider. It will be useful. Capricious Copper Dragon R I like the look! And a menacing metallic is a nice change of pace. Angel of Vengeance R It has a clean sharp look about it. I like it! Bruenor Battlehammer R I applaud WOTC for releasing figs of the characters from the adventure novels. It is a good looking fig too! Demonweb Swarm and Rot Scarab Swarm C Both very useful! Dwarf Brawler U Wow! A humanoid without a weapon in its hand. It could be useful in many settings from the Taverns to the City Streets. Fire Archon R I like him! I know he looks like a reject from a Disney movie, but I applaud the effort for somethng a little different. Elf Conjurer R I could see a player pick him as their character. Gelatinous Cube R Finally again! If I did not already have a clear resin one, then this may have been a five. Now where is the Rust Monster? Large Fire Elemental U This is by far the best look for the large elementals. Flame Snake C This could be very useful. Halfling Enchanter U Again something different. I like the colors. Merchant Guard C It is a good guard pose. Well done! Manitcore Sniper R Just when I am getting use to the 3rd edition Manticore, they go back to a more classic design. I could use another Manticore. Militia Archer C I like the Green! Again a different look and I could use her as that certain look for a specific town in my campaign. She works for me. Ogre Brute R Great pose for an Ogre. It will get some use. Naga R Yeah! Another one that will get some use. Rage Drake R Good looking mount. I would have preferred it to be Uncommon though. Shadow Mastiif U We needed him! Another first MM figurine that has not previously been produced. Spined Devil U I can use more Devils to throw at my party. Tiefling Cleric U It is a good looking figurine. Warhorse U Very useful! I will need some repaints too!
3
Animated Statue C It will make for good dungeon dressing. Astral Stalker U This may have been a four except for the oversized fist. What is it with the oversized fist in this set? Visejaw Crocodile U True, I could pick up a cheap toy one, but this is a better sculpt than those, and will likely see my gaming table. Yuan-Ti Malison U and Champion of Zehir R Can always use more of these, but after the Yuan-Ti Abmonination everything else pales by comparison. Drow Spider Priestess U It is just not dressed like Drow Priestess! Dwarf Maulfighter U It is a good looking fig. Do you really think anyone could fight well with a weapon that unbalanced? Macetail Behemoth R Sure here is another that could have been had with a cheap toy, but the sculpt is better. Halfling Rogue U Meh! Nightmare R I may have preferred it without the armor. Ravenous Ghoul U I can use more Ghouls. Shrieking Harpy U I always liked my Harpies female. But it may see some use. Snaketongue Cultist C I can probably find some use for it. Thundertusk Boar U Didn't we get something like this a couple of sets ago? Werewolf Champion R I thought this was a Gnoll.
2
Blood of Vol Fanatic C I could use a few of these for a encounter with a menacing dark cult that needs eradicated. Bonehard Skeleton C I can always use more skeletons. Ettercap Webspinner U It may go higher when I get one. I may have to adjust to this completely different take on the Ettercap. Mercenary General R I have a problem with men in dresses. Shakar-Kai Assassin U You think you may see him coming? Tiefling Rogue U What is it with the granny bun look?
1
Bar-Lgura R I am sorry, but it is just not doing it for me. THE OVERSIZED FIST! I am sure more regular sized fist would have done a lot of damage too. It is just an ugly fig to me. Black Woods Dryad C We finally get a Dryad and it's a what? WHAT IS THIS? Dryads are suppose to be sexy and alluring. WOTC could have made it that way in a discreet way; but NO, let's just make it plain UGLY. And I am going to end up with a dozen of these. Oi Veh! Cliffwalk Archer U Maybe it has good Skirmish stats! Did we need another elf with a bow? Eternal Blade U What is it with the hair?
12 Fives 23 Fours 15 Threes 6 Twos 4 Ones
Overall not a bad set.
Thanks,
Mazra | | | |
