While looking for something else, I ran across a link to a gleemax blog by K. Robert Gutschera (Director of Development at Wizards of the Coast).

One of the things he has posted is a transcript of a talk he did at this year's [Computer] Game Developer conference:

It's a very good read if you're interested in the technical details behind how collectable games are designed and developed (or how the same ideas can be applied to computer games).
