Umass Amherst Baby!

11/10/2007 12:48 PM
I'm planning on getting most of the mins I want from DoD through the secondary market.  On impulse today I picked up five boosters of the new set.  Here's my impressions on the fellas gals I pulled.

Rares
Angel of Vengeance- It's not a bad looking dreamblade mini, but a pretty awfull D&D Angel mini.  I don;t like it at all.
Cyclops- I didn't like the look of the cyclops in the preview... having it in hand doesn't help things.  It's a pretty fugly looking mini, not at all what I'd envision a cyclops.
Drider- Not a bad looking mini, the paint job on mine is okay too.  What I don;t like about the drider is the Drow half clearly not being to scale with the other drow in the set.  It looks like they turned a female halfling into a Drider!
Osyluth- This guy is an improvment over the original sculpt.  I kinda dig the pumpkinhead look to him.
Naga- The quality of the Naga turned out to be a big suprise for me, I thought it would look terrible; it's actually pretty good looking.

Uncommons
Astral Stalker - This guy has got some rediculously huge fists, overall the mini looks like a mummified hulk with that tiny head of his.  Oddly enough I kinda did the look of this guy, I've a feeling he's going to be used as some sort of demon-mummy thing.
Yuan-Ti Malison - I was not impressed by the look of this figure in the previews... in hand it's a pretty nice figure.  I do wish they had gone with a more subdued tone for the skin, the red makes it look more like a demonic snake man.
Dwarf Brawler - Why this guy wasn't included in the barfight scenario I don't know.  It's a cool looking model.  With a hammer in his hand he'd make a nice blacksmith too.
Dwarf Maulfighter - Speaking of hammers... this guy needs a little less of one.  I'm feeling a little dwarfed out as far as hammer wielders go.  But hey at least his head isn't as big as hi8s hammer.
Eternal Blade - I can't say I was that enthused over this mini... I'd have to say it's largely the hair.  With just a short cropped doo or even a ponytail this mini would be improved.
Ettercap Webspinner - What an unlovely piece of $%&#@ this mini is.  The gallery art doesn;t do justice to the fugly and overinked bugman this one is.  The original ettercaps were creepy in all their purple glory, this fellow looks like a Brian Froud reject.
Large Fire Elemental - Mmmmm... clear plastic fire elemental...awesome.  I'd kinda like to get a few more of these for fire markers, it's nice how it looks less humanoid and more natural.
Guardian Mummy - I'd like to trade in my Ettercaps for more of these please. .  I'm psyced over the Uncommon mummy, it looks much better than his Harbringer cousin.
Ravenous Ghoul- I like the sculpt on this figure quite a bit, in fact I'd like a few more.  The size does bother me a bit, he's clearly the Bugbear footpad of the Ghoul world.
Shakar-Kai Assassin- Spiked chain fella... meh.  The milky white skin paintjob is pretty un-inspiring too.
Shadow Mastiff - I like evil little doggies, so I'm a little biased on this one.  This one is less about the translucent plastic and more the shiny paintjob.  I do dig the sculpt quite a bit.
Tiefling Cleric & Tiefling Rogue - I'm not sure about the red skin and horns on these guys.  It gives them more of a cartoony look to them.  I prefer the previous Tieflings we've gotten before.  The only good thing I can say about these two, they make a nice Brother and Sister pair.

Commons
Animated Statue- an awsome figure.  With just a little drybrushing to lighten up the paint job you have a stellar spectere or ghost.  The gallery picture makes it seems larger than it actually is.
Black Woods Dryad- My friend at the FLGS said Wotc is ripping off GW with this Dryad.  Aparently they were the first to have shapechanging Dryads with a "War form".  I'm just going to use these as plant monsters or primitive golems.
Blood of Vol Fanatic- How can I say no to Cultists.  I don't care for the green hilted dagger, but otherwise I'm happy with the figure.
Boneshard Skeleton- This one is not too bad either, I don't think I'd want to many of them.  There have been plently of better skeleton figures before hand, having some banged up ones with thier hands replaced with knives is nice.
Demonweb Swarm - Are these fiendish ants or spiders here?
Drow Blademaster- A pretty nice looking drow, I'm just not sure he should be a common.
Farmer- This is a pretty awsome looking mini actually.  People were crowding around me just to verify that he was indeed holding a pig.  It's just too bad the pig can;t do anything in the skirmish game.
Flame Snake- Yeah I don't like that black spot behind it's hood either.  The coils on this mini ought to have been tighter.
Merchant Guard- A pretty nice looking common with a very static pose.  It makes for a nice chess piece.
Militia Archer- Seeing this figure in the flesh(plastic?) made me change my mind on it.  I was pretty dedicated to hating the lime green paintjob they had given it.  Mine has a nice wash that darkened the keylime pie green into a more subdued appropriate color.
Rot Scarab Swarm- I love running pulp games, partcularly where part of the action happens in Egypt.  This is likely going to be my most used common of the set.  It looks real nice too in all it's shiny chitinous glory.
Snaketongue Cultist- Mmmmm Cultist.  Nom Nom Nom.  Some dark brown robes would have been nicer, but hey the green works well for a Dark sect of Druids.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.
