Hi Everyone,

I have been tracking Ebay closing auctions for years now.  I do this to find bargains on minis, and to know an approximate worth to the individual minis.  This is what people are willing to pay for a mini at a given time.  The Buy It Nows on Ebay are more like a retail store, and there is a premium paid to buy minis this way.

I have tracked over 800 closed auctions on Ebay for the DeoD set.  I thought I might share some of my findings.  I keep the info on an Excel spreadsheet, and track high bids, low bids, averages, and the mean price.  I have found the mean price (the very middle selling price) to be the best idea of a minis true value.  This is a totally random sampling.  Shipping is included in the pricing.

Here are the tops so far for Desert of Desolation:

1.) G. Cube - High $22.26 - Low $11.20 - Avg. $17.12 - Mean $17.48 (37 auctions)  The prices have been falling on the G Cube.

2.) Umber Hulk Delver - High $24.01 - Low $11.00 - Avg. $16.42 - Mean $16.20 (42 auctions)  Showing some strengthening, may eventually overtake the G Cube.

3.) Drider - High $18.51 - Low $10.60 - Avg. $14.97 - Mean $15.00 (25 auctions)  Closing sell prices have been some of the highest of late.

4.) Capricious Copper Dragon - High $22.48 - Low $10.00 - Avg. $14.62 - Mean $13.77 (22 auctions)  Prices are dropping of late.

5.) Nightmare - High $14.04 - Low $9.38 - Avg. $10.61 - Mean $10.51 (22 auctions)  The last auction I tracked set a new low.

It is not a perfect system, but there is enough sampling to get a good idea.

I track earlier sets too, so if anyone is interested, I can post results from these earlier sets.

Happy Trading,

Mazra

PS  I need to give an honorable mention to the Feral Troll with a mean of $10.24 and growing.  It will likely pass the Nightmare.

Mazra, thanks for the stats. Yes, I am interested to see a "truer" measure of DDM values for earlier sets.

Hi Thenameless,

Sure!  I will do this in parts.  The top five for Night Below are as follows:

1.) Large Shadow Dragon - High $21.51 - Low $14.50 - Avg. $19.91 - Mean $19.68 (21 auctions)  This is a very strong mini, and may go much higher.

2.) Raistlin Majere - High $23.00 - Low $13.05 - Avg. $18.39 - Mean $19.18 (12 auctions)

(Bonus) Black Robed Raistlin Majere (Gencon Promo) - High $46.02 - Low $12.50 - Avg. $21.94 - Mean $19.90 (40 auctions)  If you find one for $15.00 or less get it, this bad boy is going nowhere but up.  That is unless WOTC reissues, then all bets are off.

3.) Large Gold Dragon - High $23.95 - Low $11.75 - Avg. $16.13 - Mean $15.32 (22 auctions)  Showing some weakness and maybe more in the future.

4.) Large White Dragon - High $27.19 (Sucker born every day) - Low $11.87 - Avg. 15.42 - Mean $13.75 (20 auctions) This mini is staying strong,

5.) Frost Giant Jarl - High $17.00 - Low $8.00 - Avg. $13.45 - Mean $13.51 (13 auctions)  The low was hit this weekend, so now is a good time to get him.  He is actually an affordable Frost Giant for those that need a few for RPG.  So what if you have three or four Jarls running around the board.  Your table will look cool!

6.) Skeletal Courser - Mean $11.77  and 7.) Lady Vol - Mean $11.00

OK, so there is the top seven from Night Below.  As time allows, I will add more earlier sets to this thread.

Later,

Mazra

No doubt the Large Shadow Dragon is driven by its tier 1 status in the skirmish game. I suspect that the Large White could out-pace it in the future with 2.0 coming.

Hi Wolfgang,

No problem!  I was keeping up with this any way and thought I should share.  I don't like paying too much for a mini when I buy on Ebay, and this helps.

OK!  How about the top five from Unhallowed:

1.) Beholder Lich - High $34.00 - Low $13.00 - Avg $22.39 - Mean $23.60 (29 auctions0) Last 11 auctions mean $16.78 and dropping like a rock!

2.) Large Black Dragon - High $31.50 - Low $17.25 - Avg $22.60 - Mean $22.25 (15 auctions) This one is going up, and wlll likely past Beholder Lich.

3.) Large Brass Dragon - High $18.50 - Low $8.49 - Avg $13.32 - Mean $12.55 (17 auctions)

4.) Virtuous Charger - High $14.50 - Low $9.70 - Avg $11.71 - Mean $11.60 (13 auctions)

5.) Large Ice Elemental - High $14.10 - Low $7.95 - Avg $10.65 - Mean $10.53 (14 auctions)

More to come!

Hi Thenameless,

You may be right,  But the Shadow Dragon is very popular.  The white is not the better sculpt,  Quite frankly I wish WOTC made the Zombie White  the Large White.  The good skirmish stats for the Shadow Dragon is just a plus.

Thanks,

Thanks Maz. I've always thought that ebay was a truer gauge for after market values. Especially when you look at Paizo's (for instance) ridiculously insane prices on their minis.

Mazra,

just curious, how are you tracking these? Are you just grabbing certain auctions and watching to the end? It's very easy to search for a mini, then do an advanced search and look at the recently ended auctions. I'm not sure how far it will look back, I searched Drider and got many auctions and they went back as far as November 11th. And then I searched Large Ice Elemental and it only went back to November 17th and there were only 4 listings.

The Large Ice Elemental is why I'm asking. The 4 recently ended auctions show as:

$5.00 $2.95 S&H Nov-24 09:56
$3.80 $2.75 S&H Nov-19 18:15
$5.19 $2.75 S&H Nov-18 18:08
$3.26 $2.50 S&H Nov-17 22:16

5.) Large Ice Elemental - High $14.10 - Low $7.95 - Avg $10.65 - Mean $10.53 (14 auctions)

So I was wondering how you came up with a high of $14.10 and a low of $7.95? Of course, you're data probobly goes back much further, so I wasn't trying to poke holes in your work. I was mostly wondering if you were aware of this Ebay feature?

Gary

madda is still doing his automated thing.

EBAY vs Stores are two similar and generally parrell economies. Store pricing will be higher, since you are paying for availability when you want it, not at the whims of someone offering what you want on EBAY. EBAY search is not the best. I used to do something similar to what mazra is now doing. What I found was that the median ebay prices scaled VERY consistently with the median/average STORE prices, so when using the guide for its original intention of setting a market value for RELATIVE value, with the proper scaling modifier you could very closely match the two methods.

The final point, is that the variable costs of EBAY tend to be larger than a store. The mini price might only be a fraction of the purchase cost once you factor in the EBAY related shipping charges from the seller. In my experience, the discount for multiple buys from a store tend to be a LOT better than the discount from many EBAY sellers. So if buying 30 minis, you will save a lot, but if buying just a single one, it is probably cheaper via EBAY even after shipping.

Built the addition for this addiction, now on to the "gaming table" project....

Hi Zenako and to others that post,

First to Zenako, I owe you a great deal of thanks.   By watching your bidding habits I have learned a lot, and have scored some cheap minis along the way.  We lost a good one for a lot of Aberations recently!  But as I have learned losing an auction is not a bad thing.  I strive to buy the mini or multiples at its lowest possible price, and I know you do the same, and maybe even lower.

Basically, all I do is put in my Ebay watch up to the 100 allowed auctions.  When they end I transfer the closing auction price plus shipping to my spread sheet.  Delete those Ebay watch entries and watch some more.  I don't do this every day, except around new set releases.  It is nowhere near a perfect system, but it provides some ideas and trends which are helpful.

I am pretty current with the DeoD set, but an individual mini from an older set may not be as current.  Also, if the auctions are ending Monday - Friday from say 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, I may miss a good number of those due to my tracking limits.  The Large Ice Elemental for instance was selling for a good amount just a couple of months ago, but the trend recently shows a fall off in prices.  My tracking for this is over several months, so price do vary considerably over time, both upwards and downwards.  The Large Ice Elemental will likely drop out of my top five very soon.

Like I named the thread, take this information "For What Its Worth."  If the information is helpful or informative to you that is good.  If not that is fine too!  I just thought I would share the info I collected.

Happy Trading To You Until We Meet Again!

Mazra

Hi Wondergecko,

Are those bids you have won? They are all better than I have tracked. It goes to prove with patience and good timing you can get some deals on Ebay.

BTW- The cheapest Pit Fiend I have tracked was $16.76, and that was soon after release.

Mazra, thanks for this information and for the explanation on how you collect your data. I do much the same thing (especially when tracking the new sets), but I don't do it so formally or look at as long of a history.

I've also noted (and am curious if you have noticed the same) that the mini selling price, during a fixed time period, is usually pretty flat, regardless of the shipping price. In other words, if a certain mini is selling for ~$7, it will be in that range regardless of what the S&H price is. So I tend to focus on the sellers that have reasonable S&H charges.

And, like you said, the biggest thing is to be patient.

Gary

Wondergecko,

Those are great deals you got!  However, I noticed that the link to the Lg White Dragon has a photo of the Lg White, but the text of the auction states that "you are bidding on 1 Dire Tiger".Â

Did they ship you the Dragon, or the Tiger?  $7.50 for the tiger wouldn't be such a good deal, lol.Â

Zenako,

Great to see your name on the board again!  Where have you been?  Lurking or took some time away from the game/board?

Mazra,

I'm curious how you select which auctions of a figure to watch.  Do you select auctions finishing soon to be able to watch many more quickly?  About how many can/do you track in a month?

Oh, and another great thanks to both of you for all you have added to the community by making trading more easily accomplished by us, the less avid collector/users.

Hi Kat_Dawg 33,

You know it is really all over the board.  Some sellers seem to bring higher closing bids than others.  The time of day or week makes a huge difference.  I have seen the Osyluth have several closing bids in the $13.00 range and at the same time have several closing bids around $7.00 to $8.00.

The highest bids for single mini auctions usually are when the bids end on a Sunday evening.  The lowest bids are typically during the middle of the day during the week.  It makes sense.   When people are home they are more likely to be watching Ebay and making bids.  I have found that bids ending on Saturday night to be a good value, but Saturday morning not so much.

I have found that sellers with a reasonable shipping rate and high score can often bring the highest closing bid price.

And finally some times I just shake my head at what a mini will sell for.  Hands down watching Archfiends Drzzt auctions were the most interesting.  That is until WOTC decided to put him with an Icon.  He has gone from $70 to $80 at the first of the year to upper $30's to low $40's recently.  It is still an incredible price for a tiny piece of plastic. :)

Thanks,

Mazra

Hi Zoons,

When time permits, I do a search "D&D"  all related items show up.  I scan for auctions ending soon and within the next 24 hours and put watches on them.  Then I come back and post the ending bids in my Excel spreadsheet, delete the ended bids, search and watch some more.Â

I don't do this all the time, so I miss plenty of auctions.  But over time I get a really good sampling that helps me determine what I am willing to pay for a mini, and to see the value of my collection.  Usually when I bid, I do not bid above the auction low prices.  Often I get a bargain.  Sometimes if I had waited a little longer, I could have gotten an even better bargain.  And sometimes I have one mini to complete a set and I just get it, and later cry and say, "Why did I pay so much for that mini!"  :(

That sounds right. I also try to spread out my shipping costs by purchasing multiple minis from a single seller. . . and that's where I get bit once in a while. I'll figure out what a good purchase price is based on recent sales, and then find a seller that has a good combined shipping rate and multiple mins from my want list for sale. I sometimes will bid just a little over my guesstimate of the "low" (thinking my average will be lower due to the combined shipping) and then I'll loose all but one of the auctions... :( dang it!

Hey, do you notice older minis can be had a little cheaper right before and just after a new set comes out? From my account, it seems that an average mini will take a pretty good dip in price during this time, and even the popular, high end minis will dip a noticable amount. Most everyone's resources are going toward purchasing the new stuff.

Kyrin, I hunt on holidays too. When my nephew played Magic, he used to monitor auctions ending during Pre-release events. I've not tried that for minis... yet.

Hi Again Kat_Dawg33,

Yes!  The very best time to get deals on older set minis is just before the next set is released.  I am guilty of this too, as after a set is released that is when I am the busiest at keeping up with auctions.  I need to start out a few weeks before the sets are released for even better bargain hunting.

I too have been burned by trying to get discounts on shipping.  It is a bummer! :(

I hope to post another top five from an earlier set a little later.

Hi Everyone,

OK! This is one of my favorite sets. I have bought more boosters for Blood War than any set to date. The problem is with this set I have not tracked as many auctions, but here goes any way, and of course, for what it's worth.

1.) Pit Fiend - High $25.00 - Low $16.76 - Avg. $19.91 - Mean $20.56 (17 auctions)

2.) Horned Devil - High $28.95 - Low $13.50 - Avg. $18.68 - Mean $19.50 (18 auctions) The low was just this month (Nov. 2007).

3.) Ice Devil - High $25.00 - Low $11.00 - Avg. $15.96 - Mean $15.35 (19 auctions) The low was this month too!

4.) Githyanki Dragon Knight - High $25.80 - Low $9.59 - Avg. $14.91 - Mean $15.31 (20 auctions) This one is all over the map in closing auction prices.

5.) Fire Giant Forgepreist - High $18.99 - Low $8.00 - Avg. $13.90 - Mean $14.00 (14 auctions) The high was tracked this month (November 2007).

Honorable mentions to 6.) Marilith - mean $11.45 7.) Succubus - mean $11.38

I did not track as many of these when the set was released because after buying 2 cases plus six boosters, I had much of the set. I have recently began to track them again. The Fire Giant is really starting to go up in price, while the devils and demons are now going the other way.

As a caveat. This is just sharing my tracking, so your results may vary. :)

Sorry for the late reply, guys. I got these about 2 weeks ago, and it was a large white, not a dire tiger :P (However, the guy did accidentally ship me a GDK rather than a pit fiend at first lol :P The reason the prices were so low is because the seller forgot to put 'D&D' in the auction names, and as such, few people found them. I didn't list it, but I also got 3 asuras for $1 each, and a total of $5 shipping on all of this :D

Yes, I do commissions. Except the only currency I accept is souls, and you can't send them on Paypal yet.

Hi Wondergecko,

If D&D was not in the name, then how did you find them?

Did they just put miniatures of something? I used to search D&D Miniatures and DDM, but found by just searching D&D I got the same things and more.

Great find! Way to go. I may have to test some other search options. :)

Thanks,

Mazra

I think I looked for 'Large White Dragon', found the dragon, and then looked at his other items

You can find a few things off the beaten path sometimes. I found an LSD two years ago by doing the same.

Hi Teflon Jeff,

Curious?  What did you end up paying for the Large Silver?Â

Thanks,

Mazra

Zoons, mostly just swing by and skim/lurk these days, with an occasional post.  Most of my posting is on DDO forums this past year (Zenako there too).  IIRC about 1500 in the past year.  Still massively collecting and working EBAY for deals.

Hi Everyone,

For what it is worth, here is my tracking info from War of the Dragon Queen.

1.)Aspect of Tiamat - High $40.07 - Low $22.27 - Avg. $28.68 - Mean $29.05 -(21 auctions) No surprise here!

2.)Dracolich - Hgh $24.45 - Low $14.16 - Avg. $18.91 - Mean $19.32 - (14 auctions) Most recent auction tracked $16.07

3.)Aspect of Bahamut - Hight $20.00 - Low $11.50 - Avg. $15.72 - Mean $18.25 - (8 auctions) I did not track as many auctions of these, so the results may be off. The most recent auction was the low of $11.50, so this item may be tracking much lower now than previously.

4.)Large Green Dragon - High $23.49 - Low $11.01 - Avg. $16.51 - Mean $16.35 (13 auctions) Sell prices most recently are higher than Bahamut. This fig can easily make it to number 3 in the list.

5.)Sorcerer on Black Dragon - Hight $34.96 - Low $8.25 - Avg. $16.83 - Mean $15.50 (15 auctions) All over the map. The low was the most recently tracked auction. But I have seen some closing bids over the mean too in the last month (Nov. 2007).

Honorable Mentions: 6.) Eldritch Giant- mean $12.69 (This mini is falling like a Thaskor) 7.) Tundra Scout - mean $11.47

The set in general, save Tiamat and the Large Green Dragon, have been dropping in recent auctions from previously.

As I track any significant changes, I will update the individual set post or repost my results as an update.

Your thoughts are alway appreciated. And as always, your results may vary, so bid at your own risk.

Regards,

Mazra

I think that with huge rares in particular, they are hot when first released. In the following year or so, they taper off to decent buying levels. Long term though, I expect that they will outrun most rares (i.e. choice huge rares will go up more than choice large and smaller rares, crappy huge rares will go up more than crappy large and smaller rares).

Over 270 successful online DDM trades.

Hi Thenameless,

I agree with your assessment.  At present though only Tiamat is holding some value.  The other WoDQ huge rares are suffering.  The one that surpises me is Bahamut.  It has really fallen off.  When you can no longer find WoDQ on store shelves, I believe you will begin to see a real increase in after market prices.  The same thing happened with GoL.

For those on this board, right now may be the best time to pick up some of these huge WoDQ rares.  Well maybe right after Christmas may be better still. :)

Mazra
