Recently due to a friend at work prompting me i decided to get some Minis.
I got a starter Box
2 War of the Dragon Queen Boxes
2 Underdark
1 Night Below
1 Unhallowed.

I am debating however, if I should continue (While i do thinkt he figures are nice, I am most proud of my Bahamut and an Artemis figure yay)

I wonder how best to get involved with this game. Are there any sets i really should get?

What of the new sets i keep reading this Desert of Desolation set is rather sub par because there are new rules comming due to DND4e,

All in all I am rather confused.

Also some of the figures seem amazing, i really want a dracolich and a deep dragon but all in all for this game are there really that many "TIER 1" type minis? Are there critters i NEED to get?

Edited - I have a bad habit of reading too hastily, you seem to know about the new rules... DoD is ok set, but more low-powered than some eariler. It was probably designed new rules in mind - and if you want to test new rules soon, then you'll need this set. I think Blood War and Underdark have been most liked sets.

Dracolich & Artemis are too weak in current rules, hopefully not in 2.0!

With minis from those sets, you'll probably want to stay with older rules until more of the figs you own will be converted. Due to changes, it's hard to say what will be must in 2.0, but I'll say a few words about the game with current rules. There's different combos, I think Large black & shadow dragons are very hot right now, and one really critical piece for Chaotic Evil is Wardrummer. From the last set, there's Eternal blade commander for CG that's very good. You can see list of good pieces from toolkits (here: http://hordelings.com/forums/postView.php?post_id=67815 ), but those files havent' been updated for a few sets.

I hope this helps!

The game is about to change, perhaps dramatically, and it's very likely that some of the "must have" pieces of the past will no longer remain "must have." So, if you're after some advice, I'd give this: for now, collect minis that you like for their sculpts or other value to you. Hold off on major purchases of top-tier skirmish pieces until after the new stats appear.

This will be quite a challenge. In January, we'll only have the Desert of Desolation stats to work with, and so pieces that seem great may turn out to be quite limited compared to what we'll see released later (or, perhaps, the reverse will be true). As such, you'll probably want to wait until we get closer to April before you invest a small fortune. (While the qualifiers for the championship get heated up around then, if you buy early, you might overspend on pieces that don't have much value.)

Both Dracolich and Artemis are more for fun, although the Dracolich can do some damage and he's very playable against living non-dragon enemies.

DoD is a good set for people that missed out on the older sets imo. A 3 point good (either faction) piece is really helpful in making warbands. Merchant guard can fit into most warbands as well. Both those creatures are commons too so you shouldn't have to buy many packs to get both.

It's also the first set that will be converted to 2.0 so if you're interested in that it's a nice pickup. I think a lot of the creatures are made with 2.0 in mind. A lot of the rares are 20-40 points and they should fit really well into the 2.0 game where we will have 10 activations.

Hi Zaqi,

Welcome to the game! The really neat thing about DDMs is that they are not just for one game but for two. I am primarily a Dungeon Master for the RPG game, so the Skirmish stats are not as important. However, I do play the Skirmish game casually with friends. The fun part of that is trying differing pieces to see how effective they are. Sure, you can read here at Maxminis, or at Wizards of the Coast website, or Hordelings, or other sites about strategy and tips. This would give you a good idea which are the most currently effective pieces. The one thing to consider though, is that the current system is not going anywhere. There are fourteen existing DDM sets, totalling well over 800 different figurines. Learn the current game and have fun with it. You can always buy specific piece or boosters on Ebay, as this is usually the least expensive route. And when the new system comes out you will be right there with the rest of us learning it too! So enjoy all the aspects, pun intended, of this wonderful game and hobby.

By the way, you should be able to find booster on Ebay at reasonable prices all the way back to the Deathknell set. You can buy a case of Deathknell booster for around $112 and that includes shipping. That is less than $10 a booster. Buying boosters by the case is the most economical way to collect, and it is a thrill to open a case of boosters. That may seem like quite a lot of money, but it is worth it.

If you have any questions, just post a thread. There are many really good people on this board that is willing to help.

Later,

Mazra

No one knows. There is a huge fluff change happening on the RPG side, so DDM 2.0 may not have classic characters of today's 3.5e.

Something that one of my friends did that worked out really well for him was to go on Ebay and buy lots of minis.  He bought all of the commons and uncommons for the past 10 sets or so.  You can usually find all the commons of a set in one lot, and all the uncommons from a set in a lot as well.  That being said, don't expect most or even many of those figures to be playable, but it will get you a good start on your collection, and you can then easily start grabbing rare singles as you need them.  If it were me, I'b be buying boosters and cases, cause I LOVE opening boosters, but that route costs more in the long run.

Trying to "figure out" what you should do as far as obtaining minis is pointless. You have already started collecting and before long, you will be addicted. By spring you will probably have decided to collect them all even though you won't use most of them. Then you'll be posting here on a regular basis with the rest of us. And every week you'll be checking to see if WotC has put up the sneak preview for the next new set.

So my answer to your question would be: start buying every mini from every set now. Hoard as many as you can get, and collect the entire set as fast as you can. You'll be much happier when you do this! Trust me, I know!

Welcome to the boards and this hobby we call plasticrack.Â

DDM is both a collectors hobby (getting pieces, finishing sets) and a strategy game where you compete against others.  Both of these are huge fun and as others have said very addicting.Â

And as others have said it is going through a major overhaul in a few weeks.  It is something for the good of the game and should really make things interesting a new again.Â

To get a feel for the current game, how its played, and the current pieces being used (many from Desert of Desolation), check out Vassal (see the On Line (Vassal) section here on Maxmini's) where DDMers can get together to play minis for practice, fun, and enjoyment.Â

Good luck and have fun.Â

Good luck. If you want to get serious about it, I recommend trying to get all the oldest pieces first. They have limited supply, and the price will (usually) only go up.

If you're a bit more cautious, I recommend the latest 3 sets, as they will be immediately useful when 2.0 drops.
