I've been kicking around the idea of buying some dungeon tiles for the past year, and finally decided to look seriously at purchasing some.  Imagine my surprise when I saw this:

http://www.amazon.com/Dungeon-Tiles-Dungeons-Dragons-Accessory/dp/0786943483/ref=pd_bbs_sr_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1198015207&sr=8-5

Luckily, I found 2 on ebay for 14.99 apiece, and bought them.  I wonder how things will fare for new tiles purchasers, though?  The ones on ebay were the only ones that I could find, other that the amazon ones.  Just how essential is the first set in relation to the others?

Wow!  Obviously these are now out of print.  I certainly paid a whole lot less than that for my 2 packs of the first set.

The first set isn't needed at all. Its nice to have for variety but not essential.

I'm glad I grabbed the last couple of DT1s off the shelf at store though

Wow, considering I have been playing SWRPG for the last 6 months, I have 2 packs of each set unopened... Hmm, cash cow?

If anyone needs them, I'd be willing to let go of one of the DT1's for a decent rate.

To think, they were almost giving them out for free at GenCon last year. I think my friend went home with four sets.

From what I've heard the sets have sold really well.

They were the low end prize at the die throw the last two years, so no matter how bad you rolled you could usually get a set of dungeon tiles, I think a handfull of magic card packs or an old paperback novel were the only lower prizes and on sundays its pretty much the only prize left (apart from the aforementioned magic cards and paper backs).

I picked up DT1 for $10 when amazon first listed it. $60 is a weensy bit over the top (especially since I still prefer to hand-sketch maps onto a dry-erase battlemat (and rarely use dundjinni for something fancier).

Wow, I didn't know they were cruising at around $60 a pop now. I wouldn't want to buy them at that price.

All of those sellers on Amazon are probably high-volume book dealers and/or people reselling from distributer lists, who don't have any idea what Dungeon Tiles are and have all of their prices automatically calculated based off of a price list from a distributer.

We don't know if WotC is going to keep re-printing more of each set as needed, but there are still copies sitting on the shelf in some game stores, and there have been a decent number of the first set put up for auction on eBay (new, and sometimes used or combined with other sets) in the last month that have sold at reasonable prices.
