4E SRD and OGL

D&D 4th Edition System Reference Document and OGL Designer’s Kit

Wizards of the Coast has developed a new, two-phased release structure for the Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition System Reference Document (SRD) and Open Gaming License (OGL).

Phase One

The first phase of the 4th Edition developer materials release will be marked by the January 2008 availability of the OGL Designer’s Kit. This kit is designed for independent publishers looking to obtain early access to 4th Edition rules in order to develop compatible products to release just after the 4th Edition launch. These publishers will pay a one-time fee of $5,000.00 USD for access to the OGL Designer’s Kit, which includes first looks at the 4th Edition rulebooks, the SRD, final galleys and more.

The OGL Designer’s kit includes:

  • Pre-publication versions of the 4th Edition rulebooks:
  • 4th Edition Player’s Handbook
  • 4th Edition Dungeon Master’s Guide
  • 4th Edition Monster Manual
    • Pre-publication version of the System Reference Document (SRD)
    • Open Gaming License (OGL)
    • License Guide
    • FAQ
    • Registration Card
    • Updated documents as the rules are finessed and finalized
    • Final galleys including typeset text and artwork
    • Advanced copies of the finished core rulebooks

Developers purchasing the OGL Designer’s Kit will receive updated pre-publication versions of the 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons core rules through the time of launch. They will also receive the right to publish OGL products on August 1, 2008, five months earlier than the general public.

Parties interested in the OGL Designer’s Kit must possess a business license and execute a Non-Disclosure Agreement prior to contract communications.

    Phase Two

Wizards of the Coast will release the second phase of the developer materials on June 6th, 2008 with the free, public availability of the Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition SRD and OGL. The SRD will be live immediately upon release. The OGL will go-live on January 1, 2009.

    For further information contact linae.foster@wizards.com.

    FAQ

Q: Why are you charging for the OGL Designer’s Kit?
A: We want to encourage publishers who are serious about the business of OGL publishing to create compelling, quality products to complement the hard work we’ve put into creating 4th Edition material.

In that spirit, the OGL Designer’s Kit helps to establish a minimum bar for early entry into the OGL publishing world. We feel that publishers and developers with a proven track record of creating quality products will be able to cover the cost of the OGL Designer’s Kit and continue to create new material for 4th Edition.

Q: What about new publishers that can’t afford to pay for the kit? Won’t they be left out?
A: All of the material included in the OGL Designer’s Kit will be available for free starting on June 6, 2008. Parties who find the cost prohibitive can begin developing their products at that time.

Q: Can anyone purchase an OGL Designer’s Kit?
A: Interested parties are required to possess a business license. Wizards of the Coast reserves the right to limit participation in this program as appropriate to the business.

Q: When can I start publishing OGL products?
A: Purchasers of the OGL Designer’s Kit can begin publishing their OGL products on August 1, 2008. Other publishers may begin publishing their OGL products on January 01, 2009.

Q: Why do I have to pay to publish an OGL product for 4th Edition?
A: You don’t. Starting in June, the core rulebooks will be available on shelves everywhere, and you can use those books to craft your OGL product for sale on January 01, 2009.

    Q. What about the d20 license? Will that still exist in 4th Edition?
A: We are making the OGL stronger by better defining it. We’re rolling certain elements that used to be in the d20 license into the OGL, things like community standards and other tangible elements of the d20 license.

Since the OGL goes widespread public in Jan 09 I don't image there will be too many devs chomping at the bit to pay $5k for something which will be effectively worthless after 8 months.

In business lots of things that cost $5k can become worthless in 8 months. I admit is may be hard for an RPG producer to make it a winning proposition with that headstart but some will find it worth the cost.

Are there any Non-WotC D20 products that are selling THAT well? Of course, if company isn't small, it may also be thought of as 'gift' for employees, that are itching to get to test 4E.

The editors that pay will be able to sell their products at GenCon and Christmas 2008 with no other competition. I'm 100% certain they will recoup this 5000$ expense.
Moreover they have a possibility to establish their new products (settings, adventures, etc.) before other competitors. Very important too.
Except for the smallest ones who can't afford 5000$, I'm certain that everyone will just go for it.

Goodman Games has announced its 4th Edition plans.
By now you've probably all seen the announcement on EN World: the 4th edition open game license is officially announced! Goodman Games is excited to be on board, and we will be part of 4E from the launch.

It will all start with Free RPG Day, the event that Goodman Games created and which Wizards of the Coast is heavily sponsoring this year. Look for another free DCC -- this time 4th edition -- on June 21 from participating stores.

After that it's going to be a very big Gen Con, for a number of reasons. First, it will be the fifth anniversary of our DCC Open Tournament, and we're making it special. The module is already being crafted and it's a real challenge. The bar for competition will rise as we add more tables and more players than ever before. And of course there will be the fun fact that most people will only have a few months of experience with the game, which will level the playing field.

The second big aspect of Gen Con will be our releases. Of course Dungeon Crawl Classics will be well represented in the first wave of 4E releases. We are having some fun with the concept, and the presentation of the DCC series will change a little. I like to joke that we're upgrading from a 1E look to a 2E look. The same basic concepts will be there, and the adventures will be designed by the same talented writers, but you will be immediately able to distinguish a 4E DCC from a 3E DCC. And I think you'll like the new look.

Aside from the DCC series, we'll have some other fun products, too, but those details will be forthcoming in the future. Many of you know that I often prefer to post about a product only when I have something to show off, so we'll be announcing more details as we get the great cover designs polished up.

For those of you worried about your favorite lines, fear not. Here's a quick run down on what's in the works, some in the near future, some further out...

Xcrawl: Brendan is hard at work on an Xcrawl boxed set. Yes, you heard it right. This new envisioning of the Xcrawl world will include some "non-book elements" and will realize the game's true potential as an action-packed RPG. Look for this late in the year.

Wicked Fantasy Factory: The WFF series has garnered a lot of fans and will move into 4E. More to come on that.

Other products: I'm usually not a big fan of licenses, but there's a great comic book I've been reading lately that would be a perfect fit into our line. This may or may not come about, depending on how the negotiations go, but it will be awesome if it comes together. Enough said on that. Those of you who read the catalogue poster in Castle Whiterock carefully may have noticed the blurb on Spellburn. Look for this game of "western fantasy" to be part of our 4E lineup. And of course the opportunity for a new edition always presents the opportunity for a lot of new products in general, which will be revealed in the time to come.

It would be very unlikely for unlikely events not to occur.

I'm glad they're requiring the $5k fee. I think it'll keep some of the crap out of the offerings. Besides, the companies that have done well, and are positioned to do well in 4e, can afford $5k as a tax write off. But, there are probably a number of gangs of D&D buddies who might have thought "Hey, let's jump on this and get rich!" Those will be out because most of them aren't going to be able to borrow $5k from their moms.

I'm neither here nor there on the topic. Our DM's tend to use mostly core stuff, with smatterings of non-broken stuff from the extended books. But, we've never really used source material outside of WotC.

yeah, don't fret, there will still be crappy OGL stuff. But this should give the serious companies a shot in the arm and a leg up.
