Worlds and Monsters: Possible Minis

I received an advance copy of Wizards Presents: Worlds and Monsters. I enjoyed the book. I think the art in Races and Classes was a bit more impressive, but both books have a lot of good information.

There are a bunch of sketches in W&M that instantly spoke to me as future minis. Here are some scans. There are a few possibilities missing, and I may do some more scanning later (if I'm not in jail ).

Okay, this is already a mini, but the artwork is sooo much better than the execution.

I'm pretty sure that this Vrock will be a new mini. Aside from the pose, Shoe dropped a hint about "a better Vrock" in one of his blogs.

Shoe also hinted about a new turquoise-colored mini. Water Archon?

Is this the fellow on the Dungeons of Dread booster?

Against the Giants?

Nice to see a Wyvern that doesn't look like a "Feindish Chicken-Dog".  I couldn't help but notice that the Blink Dog got overlooked though.

I like this sketches, the Vrock demon and the Archons are the best. But I like to ask: WHat is this alien Quicklin?

Oh, and the blink dog is near the death knight, but is Invisible!!! :)

Hi Vrecknidj,

Thanks much for the images. The Fire Archon I thought was silly at first. But now I am beginning to like it, so the other elemental Archons will be welcome.

I am really looking forward to the new minis made from these images. :)

Thanks again,

The Angel and Archons are poo but I really love all the other stuff.

My fears are being lifted a little since the rest looks like 3rd edition art. The Vrock looks especially cool.

The Mountain Giant will make a fine Earth Elemental.

The Hydra not having legs is dissapointing but I can live with it.

The Quickling has a new look to it...But Im sure I can use them in my 3.5 games.

WTF happened to the Hydra's legs?!?
We'll finally get a Hydra mini in AtG and I won't want it. Bleh.
The Death Knight, Mind Flayer, Wyvern and Oni look cool and with Shoe hinting at a new Vrock soon, I'm glad they didn't turn it into a pile of poo.
Still think the Archons stink, the Quickling looks terrible and the Mountain Giant looks more like the offspring of a Fomorian and an Earth Elemental than any sort of Giant.

This new learning amazes me Sir Bedevere. Explain again how sheep's bladders may be employed to prevent earthquakes.

I really like the vrock, and hope they give us a mini of this one soon, preferably uncommon so we can get enough. Vrock are often supposed to be found in numbers. The legless hydra is o.k., though I probably liked them better with legs. The archons still seem a bit silly to me. The angel artwork looks a lot better than the crappy mini we got for angel of vengeance. I still prefer more "human" looking angels that the one in this artwork, but at least the artwork looks humanoid, whereas the mini looked like a blob of clear plastic with spaceship-like wings.

Archons are silly. Wyvern is pretty good. I could care less about vrocks. The hydra looks bizarre without legs. I don't need an Oni. The death knight looks like a cool bad dude. Quicklings? I don't know what they are. I don't mind quicklings. Zero interest in another mind flayer. Mountain giant--that's supposed to be a giant? Lame. Looks like a good earth elemental, but I am overflowing with large earth elementals (loyal earth elemental, elemental wall, and one large earth elemental already). If the mountain giant is a huge, then it would make a fine huge earth elemental.

That Hydra will take a little bit of getting used to. I won't say that it looks bad, but it is definitely a departure from my standard mental image of one.

I gotta say.  I think the Hydra makes more sense now that it doesn't have legs.  It's more snake-like than the old multi-headed brontosaurous of past generations.  I have an old pewter Ral-Partha hydra that this looks more like (though beefed up a bit).  I like it.

I would sooner have a hydra with legs, love the vrock and the wyvern and mindflayer. Dislike the idea of the angel looks and the elemental archons. Not sure how I feell about the mountain giant but think Wraith nailed it.Quickling are suppose to be little fairy type creatures with bows.

I like the classic looks of the Hydra, Oni and Wyvern.

The Archons I still don't like.

The Angel looks better, but still 3 fingers and a little odd.

Quickling and Mountain Giant suck.

Vrock, Death Knight and Mind Flayer look fine.

Agreed the armor just looks stupid and I'll add the probability that I'll never get a nice clear plastic Medium Water, Fire or Air Elemental or a Medium Earth Elemental that doesn't look like the Thing.

Yea, but there'll never be a better elemental than Runelord's Neopolitan Elemental that he made out of a medium water.  Too funny for words.

I still don't like the fire archon but I do like the look of lthe earth and air archons the sketches gives me hope for the future archon minis.

To answer doubtofbudda I think I dislike the fire archon becuase of its pose, straight up and static, it looks like its standing at attention whereas the other archon have action type poses. Even with that i'm not thrilled with the water archon we'll see how it looks in color in hand

Quicklings? I don't know what they are.
Converted Quickling

A monster from before 3e.

Check out the speed.  Hence the name.

Dave

QUICKLING

Small Fey

Hit Dice: 1d6 (3 hp)

Initiative:+8 (Dex)

Speed: 240 ft

AC: 23 (+1 size, +8 Dex, +4 haste)

Attacks: Dagger +9 melee

Damage: Dagger 1d4-1

Face/Reach: 5 ft by 5 ft/5 ft

Special Attacks: Spell-like abilities, haste, special daggers

Special Qualities: Natural invisibility, low-light vision

Saves: Fort +0, Ref +10, Will +4

Abilities: Str 8, Dex 27, Con 11, Int 15, Wis 15, Cha 14

Skills: Animal Empathy +5, Bluff +6, Concentration +4, Craft (any one) +3, Escape Artist +12, Hide +16, Jump +12, Listen +6, Move Silently +12, Sense Motive +5, Spot +6, Wilderness Lore +6

Feats: Dodge, Mobility, Spring Attack, Weapon Finesse (dagger)

Climate/Terrain: Temperate forest

Organization: Gang (2-4) or band (6-11)
Challenge Rating:
3

Treasure: No coins; 50% goods; 50% items

Alignment: Usually chaotic evil

Advancement: 2-3 HD (Small)

Quicklings are relatives of the brownie (q.v.) that dabbled in dark and sinister faerie magic many ages ago. Legend relates that they were transformed into creatures of evil as punishment. Quicklings have an intense hatred of all races (especially the other fey creatures) except their own kind.

Quicklings are small and slender, resembling miniature elves with very sharp, feral features. Their ears are unusually large and rise to points above their heads. Their skin ranges from pale to blue-white. Their hair is silver or white. Quicklings dress in fine clothes of bright colors. They are fond of silver and black, and often wear or adorn their clothes with these colors. Quicklings never wear any form of armor or cumbersome clothes.

   They speak Common and Sylvan.

COMBAT

A quickling will attack by rushing in, stabbing a foe with its daggers, and then moving out of melee range before the opponent can react.

ÂSpell-Like Abilities: 1/day—dancing lights, daze, levitate, shatter, and ventriloquism. These abilities are as the spells cast by a 6th-level sorcerer (save DC 12 + spell level).

ÂHaste (Su): A quickling is affected by a permanent haste spell. This grants the quickling one extra partial action, either before or after its regular action. It also grants the quickling a +4 bonus to its AC (already included in the statistics block). The quickling loses the +4 AC bonus anytime it would lose a dodge bonus. The quickling can jump one and one half times as far as normal.

This is an inherent bonus and cannot be dispelled or negated.

ÂNatural Invisibility (Ex): A quickling is effectively invisible when in its natural climate or when not moving. It loses this invisibility when it attacks.

ÂSpecial Daggers (Ex): Quicklings sometimes employ special daggers that, in addition to dealing normal weapon damage, cause a creature struck to fall asleep.

ÂSleep: Any opponent struck by the dagger, regardless of Hit Dice, must succeed at a Fortitude save (DC 15) or be affected as though by a sleep spell cast by a 6th-level sorcerer.

Skills: Quicklings receive a +8 racial bonus to Jump checks.

ÂFeats: Quicklings gain the Spring Attack feat as a bonus feat.

The Quickling first appeared in the 1e MM II (Gary Gygax, 1983).

well I've got to say, if the death knight is better than the first one I'll be really happy. I loved the first scupt and this one is a little cooler...If you can't guess, DK is one of my favorite monsters of all time.

I like the archons, but as i suspect...not at the cost of replacing the elementals as we know them.
New wyvern and vrock would be awesome...my old vrocks, Tilty and Weeble the Vrock need some friends. (no i haven't named all my minis yet...just a few - I would really need some extra time on my hands).

I guess I'm just a shameless yes-man because I actually don't have an issue with any of the new takes on creatures. Different is not automatically bad.

I think that the alien representation of perfection that is the angel is appropriately awe-inspiring and inscrutable. I even like the mini, although of course like most of them the paint job isn’t as good as it could be and the face could certainly use the small level of definition that the artwork has.

The Vrock and Wyvern are clearly improvements.

I didn't like the fire archon when it was released in DoD but having read the ecology article I find the new take much more interesting than the old elementals which were just globs of an element that varied only by size.

The quickling has certainly become much more monstorus since the AD&D Monster Manual II.

The mountain giant is the least appealing to me but as long as the truly classic giants aren't changed quite so much even as they are tied closer the elements I'll be okay with it.

Oh, and it looks like now I'll get a Hydra! The serpentine body was a shock at first but it didn’t take long for me to prefer it over the old form, quite appropriately described by Zoons as a "multi-headed brontosaurus".

I just hope the archons don't replace the elementals.

Based on the "Out With the Old" section of the Ecology of the Fire Archon article I'm pretty sure that they indeed do replace the "old school" elementals and in my opinion the reasons given for doing this are pretty compelling.

Scott,
you could prolly get ahold of a sorc on hug black dragon for the "base" of the miniature.

I personally like the brontosaurus style hydra but i think that the legless one makes more sense from a mythological perspective. I thought that it was more of a serpent-like creature.
