| Preview 1 DoD2:
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mi/20080131b
I've (Peter Lee) spent the past few weeks settling into life in Seattle, and I've managed to arm-wrestle my first preview out of Stephen's hands. It's an exciting time for me, but that's not why you're reading this preview. This April, the new starter for the D&D Miniatures game will be released. The new rules are already available on our website for everyone to read. This April also has the release of the newest set of D&D Miniatures, Dungeons of Dread. Like Desert of Desolation, this set features more concept art for D&D 4th Edition. "Enough of this," you say? Bring on the miniatures!
| Ascendant Hellsword | The Ascendant Hellsword is an Evil champion for the Civilization faction. This elite brute's Infernal Slash increases positional changes on the battlefield. No longer do we have games of static figures mindlessly swinging at each other. Watch out, Bodyguard! The roleplaying side is a slightly higher-level version of the Cambion Hellsword as seen in the Monster Manual. Instead of a late Heroic-tier enemy, this will be seen more often in early Paragon play. The full roleplaying statistics will need to wait until the set is released. | |
| Fen Hydra | Gone is Dual Activation; bring on Multi-Activation! To mimic the solo nature of the Fen Hydra in the Dungeons & Dragons RPG, this Large creature has the ability to activate twice in a round. The attacks and hit points are dialed down slightly from the Monster Manual, but it does have the ability to increase its number of attacks as it is damaged. With Multi-Activation 2 and New Heads, a bloodied Fen Hydra can dish out a potential 80 damage in one round, not including critical hits! You'll notice some changes from the 3rd Edition Hydra. Gone is the dinosaur body; this is not an unintelligent, wingless dragon with multiple heads. Instead, this Large creature fills its own unique niche. As you fight it, it sprouts new heads. This guy gets more and more dangerous as the fight continues! | |
| Chillborn | | What's better than a mob of zombies? A mob of Chillborn zombies! This common zombie is appropriate for mid-Heroic tier encounters. Rogues are no longer useless against these guys, because there's no immunity to Sneak Attack here. Zombie head-shot, here we come! | |

| Why would a hellsword demon be wielding a halberd?
Aside from that, I like the sculpt. Would make for an interesting BBEG or PC.
The Hydra appears to be tall enough that I could transfer it to a huge base and it won't look too hokey. Can't be any more anemic than the Reaper Hydra.
I'm not sure that I have need of any blue zombies, but the sculpt looks fairly nice and can easily be repainted. Much more zombie-ish than the silly offerings in War Drums.

Ascendant Hellsword: great looking sculpt, nice colors a must have for me
Fen Hydra: Yes, Yes a 1000 times yes, finally a hydra.
Chillborn: meh why not its something a little new.
As for skimish, not sure if the Asendant Hellsword is going to be top tier in 2.0. Its too easy to chew through 105 hps and it costs you nearly half your warband. Same with the Fen Hydra too many points in a 10 activation era with so many things doing so much damage. But what do I know they might have have some fantastic synergy with other things in the set or future sets.
The Chillborn is a nice figure for 18 points even better if you can get mulitiple attacking together.

| I'm working with Shoe; he's the lead Developer as always. There has been several designers for minis the last few years; Rob Heinsoo, Matthew Sernett, Jesse Decker, and most recently Logan Bonner. Rob is now the team leader for RPG R&D mechanical design (my team leader), Matthew has moved to digital games (where original minis Developer Mike Donais is as well), Jesse Decker is running Organized Play (I forget his exact title now) and Logan is still on the design team -- he designed the set list/art order for 18 while they were searching for a replacement for Sernett; that replacement would end up being me.
I get a lot of guidance from Shoe and Rob, so don't think they're not involved on the design side; but the majority of the work will be mine for the near future -- assuming I don't crash and burn, of course... ;)

| Wow!! First, Congradulations Pete!!!!! You deserve it! I'm glad all of the time (including volunteer) time you put into the minis game has finally paid off!! I'm really looking forward to your artistic insight into the sculpting and painting of the upcoming minis line. And don't worry about 'crashing and burning'. It won't happen, I have FAITH in you. I mean hey, you came this far, right?
Now, on to the minis:
1) It's an early preview! 2) Your preview contains 3 minis! 3) Your preview contains stat cards! 4) Nice touch with the aesome and insightful flavor text 1st! 5) Yeah, when it comes to Pete, I'm kind of biased, but I feel-Justifiably so! At the very least you've all seen his work on the trofies if not heard his words on the forums :)
Ascedant Hellsword--nice sculpt, even better pose, and the Champion Ability that lets you activate one extra creature during your 1st round is killer. Picture this, it's down to the last round in the tournament, both opponents know victory can go either way. Opponent with the hellsword uses his champion ability and activates two figs in a row. His opponents heavy hitters have just been destroyed...
Fen Hydra-- finally, a hydra! Yeah, yeah, I hear all of the complaints about the paint job and I agree, bad paint job for a rare. Sculpt wise though, I have to vote against the nay-sayers and say I like it. It looks like something out of the original Jason and the Argonauts. And judging by the sculpting difficulty of it's multiple heads and its skirmish stats, the rarity can be justified.
It's DDM stats, it has the potential to get 4 attacks/round with reach of 3, thats killer. And , according to the card text it says, "Multi-Action 2: Activates twice/round". So, am I reading this right, I can activate twice with the Hydra and NOT have it count as 2 Activations? Because if so, that makes the Hydra even better.
And who ever said we are not getting a Huge Hydra? This is a 'Fen' Hydra after all. Plus, plain 'ol H*Y*D*R*A fits the five word huge for Against the Giants, so there is still hope!!!!!
Chillborn--Coolness all around!! A common, even better. Sculpt-awesome. Pose-awesome. Paint job-awesome. Ability to stack +5 cold effects-killer.
So Pete, I'm assuming you had very little to no imput on this set since WoTC is already into or past set 18?
P.S. - Gleemax doesn't like me, so I couldn't post there, :(Â I could months ago though, hmm...Â

| Posted By Temperance on 01/31/2008 9:23 PM Yup, I've moved to Seattle for good. Wisconsin has unfortunately lost two tournament organizers between Chris Tulach and I; I hope some people step up and take our place! I spent 4 years going to college in northern Wisconsin and its a great state to live in and or visit. So yes, Wiscinsin has lost some very cool folks and DDMers.Â
The Hellsword definately looks cool, but for a cost of 96 points one gets 20 damage, low HP, and poor AC & save. He will not last too long for the cost.Â
The same for the Hydra. An ok sculpt that I like, but it costs 93 pts. I will reserve judgement until I can try it out, but the multi activation sounds interesting.Â
The Chillborn just looks very cool (pun intended). A new Zombie type that might just be more than the walking dead.Â

| Hmm. Not much to get excited about here - but then I think it's going to be hard to generate excitement about 4e creatures when we don't have the 4e Monster Manual, or any adventures or other material. I can imagine how I might use them, but not whether I really will use them - it's a bit like looking at dreamblade miniatures.
On the bright side, the review is on time, nicely written and actually features three minis - not just a measly two.
Chillborn zombie - OK I guess, but specialised zombies don't do very much for me.
Cambion - I don't think we're exactly short on medium demonic creatures, especially not now we are getting loads of tieflings.
Fen Hydra - Yuck. It should have been huge. A big disappointment after all this wait that another classic creature has been so radically changed.
I hear the argument that there may still be a huge hydra, but it seems highly unlikely to me. We have already been told that the Monster Manual is a monster club - if a creature doesn't offer something new, then it doesn't get in. This mini-hydra already has snake heads and grows new heads. That's a hydra. It wouldn't fit the new MM ethos for there to be a creature that is exactly the same, but bigger. But who knows.
I don't like the new cartoony look, and I'm increasingly fed up with pointless changes to the sizes and/or looks of creatures (Dryad, Ogre, Troll, Dragons and now the Hydra). I'd like to see a few minis of creatures that haven't changed, and will actually be compatible with both 3e and 4e. | | Champion of the Bodak.Knight of the Aboleth.Squire of Gnomes. | Yeah, I'm really not loving DDM 2.0 and 4th Edition. The 2.0 cards still look ridiculous and childish (why even bother printing "Champion" on the card when another pictograph for the feebs would take up less space?), definitely a downward step from the previous look. And the 4th Edition look for monsters...Â
Okay, in all honesty, while I miss the Hydra having legs, I can deal with it being more snake-like given the distinction of "Fen" where it makes more sense that legs wouldn't be all that useful to the creature. And, all in all, the new look isn't unbearable. However, this particular mini looks like crap. It might not look as horrid if it had been previewed with just the Chillborn, but standing along the intricately detailed and beautifully painted Ascendant Hellborn it looks like a factory reject, or something dumped out of a 99-cent bag of plastic kiddie toys. I mean, that's it? Seriously? The thing is a freakin' rare and they couldn't bother to do some color shading or give it a slightly mottled appearance? They couldn't do anything to tone down that glossy, fresh coat o' wax look? Shiny green, bright yellow, and a little black and white for eyes and mouth. Yeah, I couldn't have painted that myself.

I like all three. Very cool.
Chillborn Zombies would be great for winter campaigns, or frozen north stuff.
Hydra, not keen on the no legs idea, but this is only a FEN Hydra. Still cool though. It does need a black wash. looks like it wasn't finished being painted.
I love the demon. Can't wait to use him in a sealed tourney. If I pull him AND the hydra in sealed.... WOW.

| Previews!!! WooT!!! :)
It's been a looooong wait it seems since the last few weekly previews before DoD release happened. Toss in the teasing pictures of Snowball the Beholder-I'll-Never-Get and I'm quite happy to see some new plastic!
Ascendant Hellsword: Very cool looking bad guy. I'm not sure if he'll see a whole lot of use in my RPG campaign though. I still haven't had much time to digest the changes to skirmish so I can't really say if he'll be of use to me there.
Fen Hydra: I don't mind the snake-body look. I think the paint could be better but it isn't the worst paint on a rare that I've seen...and the mini could look a whole lot better in-hand as so many minis seem to do. I am kinda dissapointed that it isn't a huge though. A large size hydra is cool though as I like having different sized variants of monsters anyways. I may try and mod one of these on to a huge base if it doesn't look like it would be too silly-looking.
Chillborn: Undead are always cool(pun intended), and it is nice to see variants but I just hope this guy is uncommon or common...if it winds up being a rare I'd be a bit dissapointed *EDIT - just noticed it's a common*. On a side note to any WoTC designers that are listening - MORE MONSTER (NON-HUMANOID) UNDEAD PLEASE! While I don't mind having a new zombie to add to my undead horde I'd rather it had been a zombie that wasn't human...heck, even make a few undead goblins or something but lets have the next common/uncommon undead be something other than human/elf/dwarf/etc... | |

| Well it's a Fen Hydra. Maybe it's not meant to be the popular Hydra version. We may still see a real Huge sized Hydra in the future. This Hydra mini looks like it's made out of Playdoh. And it is cartoony looking...sorta like an 80's cartoon drawing.
It's nice to have a Cambion figure but I'm not liking this one either. It also looks cartoony (the face) and the paint looks really muddy, as if I had painted it!
The zombie is ok though. Looks like a zombie from Michael Jackson's Thriller. It's always nice having horde monsters as commons!

No, but honestly, I wish it was a halberd....double swords are just silly. Mine will likely end up wielding a long sword.

| If that's a double bladed sword, my enthusiasm for that mini just dropped. It'll get modded in to a glaive or cut to be a sword.
Maybe they are trying to make World of Warcraft? This seems very similar...

| | Well, as double swords go, there are worse. I mean, at least *this* demon dude isn't trying to dual weild the stupid things... | | Call me: W.N. Gobo! originally posted by grim: While he is clearly insane, he does have a point. | |

| Temperance,
I just wanted to let you know that there are several of us in the DDM world who aren't interested in fourth edition at all. Please keep us in mind when designing minis, and don't forget about us completely. There are still several 3.5 basic things that weren't done, like the rust monster. And I sure hope the art isn't drastically changed nearly every single time. I could get out of collecting DDM, and I spend hundreds of dollars each set at this point. | | "Look to God and live."
