For our second preview, we feature three heroes that can be used as player characters. As all are uncommon, it should be relatively easy to get a hold of a copy to represent your favorite PC.

Cleric of Pelor

This champion demonstrates a shift in healing introduced in 4th Edition. While it's still possible to heal an ally directly, the Cleric of Pelor's healing abilities occur as additional benefits of actions. For the D&D Miniatures Game, this Champion grants healing to allies who make high attack rolls. It has a champion ability that can heal an allied creature that ends its turn in a victory area.

The Cleric of Pelor also includes a Radiant energy damage boost for close allies. There are no general rules for Radiant energy like those for Positive energy in the older ruleset. It is typically just as destructive to creatures as Lightning, Fire, or other energies. Individual monster abilities can alter this -- both creatures to be featured in next week's preview will have Vulnerable 10 Radiant.

Cleric of Pelor

Human Fighter

The original D&D Miniatures Game rules contained morale rules that gave you a potential advantage when you reduced an enemy creature to half its starting hit points. Morale rules have been removed in the updated rules, so we need to replace them with something that fills the same niche in the game -- the bloodied state. A target becomes bloodied when it is reduced to one-half of its total hit points, rounded down. For example, the Human Fighter has 55 hit points; when it is reduced to 25 hit points or less, it becomes bloodied.

The Human Fighter has an advantage against Bloodied opponents -- the Death Blow ability can be used only against Bloodied targets. When it works, it deals 30 points of damage. Unlike the Human Sellsword's Killing Blow ability, this guy has the potential to use Death Blow multiple times – whenever the Human Fighter causes a figure to become Bloodied, he recharges his Death Blow.

Human Fighter

Everfrost Ranger

Not every ranger is at home in the forest. Dungeons of Dread includes a ranger dressed for a much colder environment. I can easily see a few Everfrost Rangers being led by Wulfgar in a great winter-themed encounter.

At Speed 8, he'll often get in the first strike. If he doesn't, he has one use of a counterattack to teach a lesson. If he's surrounded, his big attack is a whirlwind of steel attacking all adjacent enemies. The icing (snow?) on the cake with this guy is that it's even easier for him to get a lucky critical hit to finish off an enemy -- against bloodied opponents, he crits on a natural 18 or higher.

Everfrost Ranger
It's our belief that Dungeons of Dread and the new D&D Miniatures Game Starter coming out this April contain some of the best PC miniatures that we've made so far. Next week, we'll peek at two evil champions for them to fight!

They all look decent enough, but I don't really have a use for any of 'em. I'll be amazed if the ones you pull out of a booster are painted 1/2 that well though.

I was really hoping that with the new factions and the lack of the, "We have to have stuff for LG and CG," excuse that we'd see somewhat of a higher monster to PC ratio, but looks like disappointment looming on the Horizon. Ah well, at least it was on time.

Decent enough PC minis I guess.  I like the Ranger the most out of the 3.

Cleric of Pelor, auto heals allies in 5 square for 15 if they make a roll of 16+, and gives +5 Radient damage to all allies within 5 squares, thats a good match for the Angle of Vengence

The Cleric and the Fighter look quite nice. The Ranger looks different from your average human mini, so not bad there either.

I'll have to say that I love this new set. Those look magnificent! During the first few sets I didn't like 'another human warrior' -minis, but now I've started to value variety on them. Great to have more 'against blooded' -effects & see another champion - especially cleric & new healing powers! The only issue is when comparing human fighter to sellsword... 24pts vs 14 with really close abilities. But I'm not going to buy 7 starters :P

It seems you're re-hooking me, WotC!

Wow.  I continued to be impressed with this set.Â

Three decent sculpts.  And from what I can read the stats look usable.  Testing and learning the new rules will tell.Â

More nice looking minis.

I think this is shaping up to be a great set. A little surprised at the Cleric of Pelor since I thought the were going with Forgotten Realms deities as the core gods this time but I'm not complaining.

OK, while I'll admit those are really nice looking minis, a preview with 3 PC/NPC types in it just doesn't do much for me. Being mainly an RPG player I've got more than enough human/elf/dwarf types already. At least these are uncommon and not rare. More monster previews please WoTC!

Of course the Gamer0 web video this week made up for this preveiw by showing us several new monsters. I'm still excited about this set.

And these card images link to a larger image which is resizable and printable. DoD2 Preview 1 cards don't appear to give you that option and the cards are less readable when resized.

WotC has previewed production paintjobs since War Drums. The quality of production-value paintjobs has been (generally) steadily increasing with each new set. There aren't too many "must immediately repaint" minis these days.

10:1 says that most of the Everfrost Rangers' eyes will be off, though.

As to the preview...all three sculpts are actually remarkably well done. They're different enough in stance, equipment, and sartorial accoutrement from previous stock-type PC minis to be refreshing.

I really like these minis. Over the years, I've groused about how many figures had unrealistic armor and clothing more suited to sci-fi; these minis have what IMHO is the proper look for a fantasy figure. My interest in this set is picking up!

I like them all. I was really hoping for a male elven ranger, after I saw the great looking minis. Want one as my PC with a nice look like that.

Still, I already like a ton of minis from that set. If the Large Silver Dragon will be in this set indeed and look good, this might even be my first ever case.

More PC types is always a good thing. And since this is a base set with the new rules, it seems logical that they would try to cover as many bases as possible.

What we don't need now is another theme set with all drow, all warforged or all gnomes. Although if they made a mini of the gnome form the WOTC cartoon thingy, I would dig it! (yeah, Gnome Monster with Minion, yellow simpsons skin, bad teeth, evil black eyes and all.........)

Those are some very nice uncommon pieces.  It is always nice to have more PC types and these guys are great.  I started collecting in Harbinger and one of the dissappointments I had from the early sets were the PC pieces.  These are much better than those in the early sets. I am still stuck in 2e so I really don't know what to expect from this set, but from the little I have seen so far it is off to a positive start.

Unfortunately, this could mean 2 things.
1. The good answer:
You will pull minis that look like these from your booster packs.

2. The bad answer:
We went through hundreds of these to find photogenic ones, but you're more likely to get wet noodle looking swords, chin moustaches and forhead eyes.

Guess we'll find out soon, but I have been very disappointed with PC/NPC types in general for a long time.

I only hope this Pics are similar to the real miniatures.
