Gary Gygax, one of the co-creators of the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, according to Stephen Chenault, C.E.O. of Troll Lord Games.

Gygax designed the original D&D game with Dave Arneson in 1974, and went on to create the Dangerous Journeys and Lejendary Adventure RPGs, as well as a number of board games. He also wrote several fantasy novels.

Gygax was not directly involved with Dungeons & Dragons after 1985, but he continued to create adventures to be used with it, which were published by Troll Lord Games.

Gygax had been in poor health for some time, according to his wife Gail. Chenault says he will publish more information, including funeral arrangements, on the Troll Lord message board as it becomes available.

I find the news.... inconceviable.  It's a very sad day for me.  I almost feel like a little bit of my childhood has died with him.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

I never got to meet him in person, but am and will remain grateful to him for creating the greatest game ever. He probably already has Tom Moldvay rolling up a character.
Rest in Peace Gary.

I think WOTC should make a mini in his honor.
A "Dungeon Master" mini would be appropriate.

I think he knew that D&D meant to a lot of people.  When it was in its infancy during Chainmail, I don't think he would have ever dreamed that his game would become so big globally.

I didn't always care for the massive amounts of character deaths that would invariably occur when running one of his adventures, but I definitely respect the man that helped make everything from D&D, to World of Warcraft, to Magic: The Gathering possible.

You were a true pioneer in fantasy gaming and we all owe you a debt of gratitute for the countless hours of fun that might not have been possible without you.  Rest in peace Gary.

Very sad news.

Gary Gygax's contributions to the development of popular, collaborative games were immense. I have had so much enjoyment from D&D, and the many RP games that followed, over nearly 30 years of my life.

This news really bumms me out. Gary Gygax had a tremendous infuence on my life. I can't imagine what my life would be like if D&D had not been a part of it. I place him up there with Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, and H.P. Lovecraft when it comes to my current likes and dislikes. Then again, with the somewhat recent passing of Tom Moldvay there is the start to one heck of a gaming group in the afterlife! May all your hits be crits wherever you are Mr. Gygax!!

so that settles it... 2pm Saturday... Let the d20's roll.

I also thought about burying your favorite d20... That seems like a big sacrifice and probably not one he would condone. So roll away sat at 2pm... It has truely been an honor.

Does anyone know where to get a public use photo of Gary Gygax? I created a memorial page on my website for him, but I want to find a photo that I'm OK to use for it without infringing on any legal use issues.

Yeah, I know that I could yank down one of the numerous photos from other folks' sites on the net to use but I really like to get proper permission for this sort of thing.

If anyone is interested in seeing the page so far, the web link to my memorial page is: http://wcbvaults.com/memorials/gygax.php

Try wikipedia. They normally very good about having royalty free images. You often must attriubte the copy right holder and then are free to use.
