| This past weekend, hordes of Dungeons & Dragons fans got a taste of 4th Edition at D&D Experience. Lucky DDM skirmishers also got to play in the first official miniature tournaments involving the new D&D Miniatures rules. The upcoming expansion, Dungeons of Dread, will be released in about a month, adding 60 new creatures to your collection. Bulette The land shark is a popular D&D icon that has already been updated for the new edition. The first thing people notice with this Bulette is its size. This 9th-level elite skirmisher is back to the Large size that it had in the 1st edition Monster Manual. This doesn't make your old Bulette from Giants of Legend useless, however, becasue the dire incarnation of this creature is a Huge, 18th-level monster. Skirmishers are a type of monster that should benefit from frequent battlefield movement, and the Bulette is a great example of this. This creature has two powers that involve burrowing. Earth Furrow allows it to burrow under enemies and knock them to the ground. It also has a 2-square burst attack to use when it surfaces, spraying rocks and dirt in every direction. As you would expect, the Bulette has the ability to burrow under opponents in the skirmish game as well. When it surfaces, it can use the Earthcrest attack to shower rocks on all creatures within 2 squares. Every round. Yeah. Dire Wolf A Dire Wolf is a creature that people want in numbers, and Dungeons of Dread delivers! This set has the 5th-level skirmisher as an uncommon figure, so you won't have any problems putting together a Dire Wolfpack to threaten your players. The Dire Wolf is a pack fighter that benefits when it has other wolf allies around. In the role-playing game, the Dire Wolf has the ability to bring prey down into a prone condition. The miniatures battle game reflects this with the immobilized condition. Once a foe is down, the Dire Wolf packs additional damage onto it. That's it for this week. Be sure to join us next week for more peeks into Dungeons of Dread! | | The year: 1994. | The dire wolf looked better slightly blurry. I much prefer the UH one. The Bulette looks much better than any of the pics I'd seen thus far, but it's still not enough to make me want a representation for a baby Bulette. Another pointless size change just to be changing something.

| | Okay, I'm giving WotC 2-for-2 on this one. Both look very nice, at least in pictures anyway. The new Bulette's colours are good, and the Dire Wolf doesn't seem to have any bones sticking out of it (I didn't like the bones sticking out of the old one). I like the statement about the old, huge Bulette not becoming an orphan. | | Over 270 successful online DDM trades. | |

| I suspect a lot of creatures were reduced from huge to large to make them more available as minis. Think about it. We only get huges once if a blue moon, so result would be a lot of creatures perhaps never getting made.
Also, the shift from huge to large doesn't seem as big as a shift from large to medium, and very few creatures conceptually depend on being huge rather than large.
Oh, and both of these minis look great from here. The bulette has a far better colour scheme than its predecessor, and the wolf has a very pleasing sculpt. | | Champion of the Catoblepas | |

Indeed. I much prefer the earthy look of the new landshark over the mithril shell of the old one.

I was really hoping we'd get DoD cards tonight, but alas.
To be fair, given the size of the new large bases and the overhang, this Bulette probably isn't much smaller physically than the old one.
And a Large Bulette (maybe Dungeonbred?) would be a frightening encounter. Smaller and more mobile, maybe faster...think Ghost and the Darkness.
Personally, whil I don't want to upgrade to 4th, the size change seems a positive thing. Large was such a goofy category in terms of scale...I'd rather see Large figs be large, and huge and bigger figs a rarity...
Both get a big thumbs up from me.

| I understand this set is
the Rehash of Dread set, but man, throw us veteran collectors a
bone. There's still classic monsters that we don't have that could be
very good for a first time set. Three Dire Wolves and not a single Rust
Monster?
The dire wolf looks like
he's taking a crap. When I needed 12 Dire Wolves, my only option was to
spend a fortune for GOL dire wolves. Then right after I finally ran the
encounter in my campaign, they release the cooler looking Unhallowed
version. I could have saved myself about $100 bucks. Now we get a third
Dire Wolf and this fella is marking his territory.
The Bullete looks great...it's not something I wish I had, but it's a nice looking mini to find in a booster.

| I think they're both nice looking minis but I'm still not that thrilled about having them in the set. A Dire Wolf was released only a few sets ago in Unhallowed. While it is nice to have a different sculpt I would have preferred to see a Bearded Devil or something like that in the slot instead.
As for the Bulette, I'm not happy with the size change. I can understand some of the reasons for it, but I still think it was fine as a Huge mini.

All encounters have to be the same? Must fight orcs, goblins, dire wolves, and dragon type monsters. Can't ever have a fight with a creature the scares the poor melee warriors.
Wizards and archers don't have too much trouble with rust monsters.
From what I have heard about reviews for 4e at D&DXP, one of the complaints is that there isn't enough variety.
It isn't the rust monster that's dumb, it's the players who don't know how to handle them.
With D&D, it's much easier for a DM to give out too much treasure than to take it back. If the party loses some key weapons or armor, it isn't that hard to give them stuff later to compensate if the rust monster(s) cause too many problems.

Every set has a lot of things I don't care for - warforged, dragonspawn, anything that is is poorly painted/sculpted, has very visible seams, etc.. That's why I'm on the singles market.
However, I must note that the last three sets have seen a dramatic increase in minis I want, so I'm not complaining! :)
