| Username, please stop making negative comments directed toward posters. The winks don't really help.
You do not need to know everything about 4e to dislike parts of it. I don't know everything about 3.5 and I have been playing it for a few years. Yes, I do have the core books for 3.5, so I have more information to base my opinion on. But if I were playing a previous to 3.5 edition, and I got to look at 3.5, I would be looking through the book, and not really understanding everything before I made a decision on whether to play it or not. The more experience we have, the more we can have an established opinion. I do not pretend to have an established opinion on 4e--the books aren't out yet. However, I can take the pieces which are presented and decide if I like the bits I am sampling. I don't need to read the whole book to get a feel for the flavor.
Feel free to enjoy 4e as much as you want. Feel free to wait for the books to come out and get them and play 4e and get a more established perspective.
I don't want to. I don't like it. Stop bashing me (indirectly) for making up my mind in a negative way before you think I should. Your bashing makes me want to learn about it even less.
Not once have I bashed players who have accepted 4e. I am getting tired of being bashed by people who have accepted 4e and want to bully others into playing it. Or tell others to not voice their opinions about not liking it. Either in the RPG game form or in minis form.
This whole 4e thing makes me want to disable my account at maxminis and not come back. Even for previews/spoilers. The fun of the messageboard is about dead.
The thing that makes me hold on is keeping in contact with traders. But I could probably just get the emails of those I want to contact in the future and just leave this messageboard. | | "Look to God and live." Alma 37:47 Vindicated Champ of Hippogriff (Arcadian Hippogriff) and Uncommon Horse | |

| Hi Everyone,
First, Maxminis contains the most mature hobbyist in mnis collecting anywhere on the web. For the most part, we are great fans of minis in general. We all have our preferences whether it is Skirmish, RPG, chainmail, A&A, etc. But we all see worth in the collecting, whether it is for play or for the collecting sake.
Very few of us have any real authority or say with WotC. That makes us like soldiers. Soldiers just have to follow the leaders. And that gives us the same right as a soldier and that is the right to complain. So, please let us complain. We so enjoy our hobby that when we see things we do not like, we feel the need to vent. Some of our venting has paid off. WotC decided to restat all the earlier sets. This was not WotC original intent. But due to the complaining and pessimism, WotC saw the errors of their ways and changed things. There is a horrible but true phrase that goes, "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." If we are not squeaking, then WotC will not realize there may be a problem.
Some say wait for the new system to be released before we complain. But I see problems with the new system already. The idea that a Death Knight can not warband with a Nightmare seems fundamentally wrong to me. The new faction system in 2.0 was a good idea in principle. It just does not seem to be working in a sensible way. Maybe I am a purist, but in my fantasy world good triumphs over evil. In the new world, there is not much good or evil, it seems mostly neutral. How politically correct have we become? There is something uniquely wrong with neutral Trolls. That would be an aberration, something rare or unique; not unlike a good Drow. :)
I am hopeful, that when 4.0 is in my hands, and I have actually played and DMed the game a few times, I will find it a much better system. I truly do hope so. It is just I don't like what I see to date. Now by my complaints and the complaints of others, maybe someone, someone within the know, will set the matter straight, and show us that we have nothing to complain about. So please assure me that the new system will be a far greater thing than the systems past. Tell me how the game play has improved. Tell me what areas are so much better than those previous. Please give us a reason not to complain.
Later,

I'll agree with you here Wraithborne, no one should be telling you if you are having fun or not. That being said, what I believe WotC is trying to say is that they've received feedback about things that aren't fun.
It's the tone and wording of the comments from them that get me. It would honestly be easier to take if they said, "We got a lot of feedback and folks don't like this". As it is, it comes off as an I don't like this and you shouldn't either kind of statement.
For example, I recently got the Rules Compendium. I found it neat that they had added comment blurbs from the designers in here and there. There was one, however that I found annoying. Matthew Sernett's blurb about conceal, "...the miss chance becomes a roll to see whether or not you have fun." It goes on to say that hitting is fun and missing is disappointment. I think this (among other things) points to a myopic, living in the moment kind of development catered to the instant gratification audience that they are trying to lure away from online games.
I've had polar opposite reactions over time. Of course no one *wants* to miss, but in hindsight, the tension creates much more memorable encounters. I don't think my players would be retelling the epic battle they had with a Shadow Dragon 3 years ago where they had failed a buncha conceal rolls and been Level Drained (the most un-fun concept in D&D, or so I've read) down to 2-4 from 14 and the wizard risked horrendous backfires casting Finger of Death from a scroll if the'd just hit all of those rolls and killed it quick and easy. It would have just been a ho-hum encounter. Instead, it became a life and death struggle that ended with the dragon rolling a 2 on his FoD save. Â

| Posted By auggest on 03/10/2008 4:40 PM I just found that the one point ironic in that you are saying it's pathetic behavior which is just an opionion  and you trying to prove your point.Â
The point of my rant wasn't about me trying to prove anyone "wrong" though. I was pointing out what I see as being problems/reasons why this community isn't a very close-nit community. I gave an opinion & tried using an example to back up my opinion...which is usually what you do when you're trying to make a point
Posted By auggest I make very few posts intentionally because I believe there should be a place for gamers to go that's free of alterior motives.
Honestly, I've seen you mention this publicly before in a thread where someone was asking you a question about your store. It came off as if you were trying to appear to be the bigger guy by not spamming people with ads as if that's what people like me are doing...yet the only time you socialize with these gamers is when you're promoting your store. I was pretty irritated when you said this the first time because I felt like you were personally accusing people like me as doing nothing but using the forums to sell minis (which is basically what you do since you only use the forums to sell your minis). I just sucked it up rather than crapping on your "customer service" thread by defending myself. It's like you're trying to make yourself look better in the publics eye and make guys like me look like spammers in order to improve your customer base.
I'm more of a D&D fan than I am an online merchant. Selling minis isn't even my full time job or even a career path...I work full time as an animator/graphic artist at Stanford University. I've spent the last 5 years taking night classes at community college to further my education in 3d animation. I hope to get a job by the end of this year at a movie studio or possibly work in the video game industry. On top of this, I sell minis to fellow gamers to help pay for my night classes and so I could afford to get married last summer. I don't go into the minis market looking to put other sellers out of business just so I can get rich. I try to look at myself as a fellow gamer, not a competitor to you guys. If I make pocket money for the week I'm happy.
I've been playing D&D for about 13 years (I started late), and I DM a Planescape campaign every other week that's been going for about 8 years now. I got my wife into playing D&D and she plays with us every session for the past 5 years. I post frequently on several D&D forums and lurk on a couple more. I have more than enough gaming supplies and I know a lot about D&D stuff in general. I always try to improve my DMing skills and I ask gamers for advice on forums all the time. I'm also eager to offer advice to anyone that listens. I've traded & sold D&D stuff to people at a loss just so I could make them happy and help improve their game. The only thing I regret not having on my D&D resume is GenCon only because I could never get anyone to go with me, but I'm hoping to change that this year.
I can confidently say that I am a gamer first and a minis seller last. I have the post counts on several sites to back it up. I see nothing wrong with linking my inventory in my sig & occasionally promoting myself when people ask where to buy minis. I'm helping gamers find some good stuff and they are helping me in return. But I'm more likely to be discussing D&D with these people than I am about promoting my minis store. It would be pretty easy for you to be social in a D&D forum without
"intentionally" promoting your store. So I find your comment hard to
believe and pretty unfair to me as a fellow gamer if you truly think of yourself as "one of the guys".
Sorry for the long-winded rant but I figured I should defend myself this time

Much like the chainmail converts? I have zero faith in WotC updating all the stat cards. The difference with this restatting is WotC has already created a format (Vintage) for the DDM game using all older figures. They also have already annouced a Championship for this format. They'll restat it all over time. On topic I agree, I've for the most part stopped reading things in the general forums on this site due to the fact that the community posts here have become so negative. *still waiting for Chainmail equivalencies*

So I offer you my heartfelt appologies and hopes that we can be friends in the future, or if not friends at least fellow gamers who can respect and respond to one another without it turning into a ploy to discredit the other. .........Andrew

I'm sorry man, I love ya Bert but I once again have to express my opinion. This whole thread was started with the basic intention of "lets make maxminis a tight community and stop all the gamer nonsense".
In all the years that I have posted on various forums, I have always been a big supporter of "let people talk without parenting them". One of the big problems with this site is the fact people try to control what others can and can't say just because it's not "lighthearted". That does nothing but make the place unfriendly and intolerable even though it's meant to be done in good faith. Telling me that I can't rant when I have insulted no one and broke no rules is going to just prove me right about this site and show that it's hard for people here to be a community.
I know you mean well, but I will continue to always say what I want to say here unless I get banned. I will never intentionally troll & flame and I will always try to show respect to those that deserve it. But if I'm in the mood to rant, I will rant. Some people like reading rants. If they don't, they can skip over it. There's no reason to warn people or suggest that they stop. I have never liked when a moderator acted like a dictator and decided himself when a thread has "ran its course". That happened way too often here back in the day. A community is full of people that talk. Let them talk; and let them talk until they decide the conversation has run it's course. If it turns into a flame war, then put the smackdown on them & the thread in question. Otherwise, it's not a community.

To clarify what I meant. Civil rants are fine (I mean fine by maxmini rules, not any other standard), and I very much agree that community is about people talking. I very much enjoy different opinions to my own.
The difference is what is construed as an insult over just talking/ranting, and I was concerned that your discussion was going to pass that. I'd rather (or at least I try to) ask people to consider how others are viewing thier posts than locking a thread. | | "Mutton yesterday, mutton today, and blimey, if it don't look like mutton again tomorrer." I'd rather (or at least I try to) ask people to consider how others are viewing thier posts than locking a thread. I have been nothing but civil. Again, you're trying to judge me on my tone and speaking style and using that as a reason to lock threads (as I noticed you locked the other thread). Many of us don't have the patience to walk on ice and worry about upsetting some poor guys sensitive feelings. You and a few others may *think* that what I'm saying and how I'm saying it is the beginnings of an insult, but I'm sorry...it's not. This is normal "bar counter" conversational speaking and if someone isn't used to it or gets nervous/insulted by it, that's their problem. I've not flamed anyone, I've not even used foul language (which I am prone to do in person). I don't deserve to be reprimanded for my personality and have threads locked because of it. Gamers in general are pretty socially awkward to begin with...don't critisize me because I can carry a normal conversation the way an average joe would talk to his friends.
I'm so tired of sensitive people here getting their way and making people like me look like we're the bad ones. Don't lock a thread just because it "might" turn into a flame war. Lock it if it does. A cop doesn't ticket me because I might speed...he waits until I broke the law. We are all grown adults, I swear some of you people need to thicken that skin of yours and man-up (I'm not targeting you Bert). I personally am a grown man that doesn't need to be babysat and "tell" on others when they upset me. I'm old enough to suck it up and deal with it myself. And I don't see enough real children posting here to warrent a babysitter.
That's a major reason why this website is so alienated...no one can be themselves and just hang out. I don't mind if there's sensitive people here with very positive outlooks on everything...it's a breath of fresh air. But don't crap on people just because they are outspoken or blunt.

| I have (many) reservations on 4E and especially DDM2, and I have expressed them on other threads, but that doesn't mean I will not give it a try or bash people who will "migrate" to the new system. At the same time, I'll continue playing DDM1 as I find it suits my style of play (and besides, I'm a nostalgic!). I too was not confident on WoTC releasing the old cards converted for us old players, but the fact that Pat Lee is working on them gives me reassurance. By that I mean that he's laying down the list of sets to convert after the All Stars, so things are moving. It seems some work will be given to Freelancers and I think they'll try to give us what we want:
See this thread http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=15311690#post15311690
(for the WoTC websensed, here's the quotation: "We have a schedule, but some things need to be ironed out before that's
released. I'm only now writing up the design guidelines that would be
supplied to the freelancers. Pat Lee")
So I agree with Greyhaze, love & peace to everybody and let's enjoy our games, whatever they'll be!

I kinda think there will always be something to complain about in every set.
Sometimes those complaints have much merit and get results (eg war drums paint, re stating all cards), and otherwise they are just a matter of taste (yet another dwarf with axe, too much anime, and soon not suitable for 3.5).
People do have the right to complain 'civilly' about what they buy. IMO that's just part of what you get to do when you purchase something. ;)
Bert, I am very happy that you're here to moderate the thread. People obviously need to get some things out of their system, but it doesn't hurt for us all to be reminded of the need to be civil.
I do think, however, that your comment about some complaints having merit, and others not, is part of the problem rather than a way to a solution. You identify the paint quality of War Drums as an example of a valid complaint - but at the time there were a lot of people (including me) who did not view it as a big issue at all - not compared to our own preferred gripes (which might be scaling issues, or set list choices). My eyesight just isn't good enough to see the eyeballs of a dwarf when it's on a battlemat four feet from my face (whether those eyeballs are actually on the eyes or on the chin).
(In hindsight, I regret that after many weeks of rants about the paint issues, I lost my temper and posted an angry request for the tide of complaints to cease. I should have let it go.)
I think that paint issues, and re-statting of cards (another issue that is irrelevant to many buyers) should also be viewed as matters of taste, and not be given any precedence over any other sources of complaints. | | Champion of the Bodak.Knight of the Aboleth.Squire of Gnomes. | Posted By Corim Danex on 03/08/2008 1:24 PM Posted By greyhaze on 03/08/2008 12:44 PM This is what I'm talking about. Even though it's specifically a 4e game, a whole new game, 3.5 ppl are gonna complain... it's just that simple. It's still D&D and there will still be figures that are awesome for 3.5 edition players (or further back). Telling people that they're getting left behind repeatedly is part of the problem. I say let them complain like everyone else, they have that right. I'm hoping that the designers will keep that in mind when they have a choice between satisfying 1 portion of the gamers or both.
I've thought about it some more. And even though I have decided to stop collecting one of everything, I think the frustration at being left behind will spill over and I will complain. It affects me too much to keep quiet about the frustration. I actually think it is better for WotC that you continue to complain. If their sales do drop, they will need to understand why.
It ought to be obvious - they have many markets, and if they walk too far away from one of those markets - such as players who stick to older RPG systems - they will lose it. But I haven't seen many indications of WotC recognizing the problem... | | Champion of the Bodak.Knight of the Aboleth.Squire of Gnomes. Friend of (Non-Ugly) Fey. Actually, yes and no. In this particular argument, I believe I am right. We don't have all the info yet on 4.0 so it doesn't make sense to bash it (whine, complain, etc). Once we get that info, then let the whining and griping begin!
I disagree. I'm not saying they should have made 4E to my tastes alone (obviously), however I've seen enough of 4E to this point to know that it was not created with my gaming sensibilities and desires in mind. They are making something that I don't want and didn't ask for, thus my negative opinion of 4E. | | Ghendar - Bringin' the snark!

I will agree with that. Mods should never decide when a conversation is done. If someone is causing trouble in a thread then they should be removed, but the conversation should be allowed to continue. | | Ghendar - Bringin' the snark!

IMO I didn't see anything that you needed to 'defend' yourself with Auggies post.
Obviously you feel different but I think this thread has reached the point where you have stated clearly what you think, and further rants counter productive.

That's a major reason why this website is so alienated...no one can be themselves and just hang out. I don't mind if there's sensitive people here with very positive outlooks on everything...it's a breath of fresh air. But don't crap on people just because they are outspoken or blunt.
Where are you getting this from?
I have always felt welcome here. Even way back when I first signed up and no one knew me from anyone. I have never felt alienated. I have always felt that I can hang out and be myself.

| I don't wear panties and we're not sitting behind our monitors fuming with rage.
What a relief! ;o) Because for a second there, I could have sworn you really wore panties and were literally foaming at the mouth at my comments about a game. 8o)
I disagree. I'm not saying they should have made 4E to my tastes alone (obviously), however I've seen enough of 4E to this point to know that it was not created with my gaming sensibilities and desires in mind. They are making something that I don't want and didn't ask for, thus my negative opinion of 4E.
Ah, the imperfection of communication! I could say it a 100 ways and someone (or everyone) would not truly understand what I am saying. But that is ok Ghendar. If you don't want to play 4E, then don't. Play 1ed, 2ed, 3/3.5ed. Just have fun and play the game you love! BTW - what exactly don't you like about 4e and how much do you think you have seen that you believe is actually all involved in 4e? If people listed actual pros and cons of particular items in 4e, there would be a bit more constructive discourse.
Username, please stop making negative comments directed toward posters. The winks don't really help.
Oryan and I have been 'arguing' across 2 or 3 different threads. In fact, I actually have agreed with most of the stuff he has said (sorry Oryan, but I haven't read your last few posts, so I can't say if I agree with those or not). The winks are there to show I am joking. I thought that is what they were for. But then again Corim, I'm not the only one making negative comments towards posters. If you are going to police me, by all means, go ahead and police everyone! ;o) (that's one of those winks, it means I am being silly/facetious and/or all around jovial).
For those of you who think I am directly or indirectly 'bashing' you - lighten up! I'm just stating my opinion like everyone else on here. I'm not calling anyone out or pointing out anyone's 'flaws'. It's a game, this is an internet community, have fun! Sure there will be duds in DDM (skirmish and PRG wise) here and there, but even if you only have 5 awesome minis in a set, you get 5 awesome minis in a set! If you want to doom and gloom, then by all means, doom and gloom! I'm going to search out that silver lining on the clouds hanging over your head and run with it! I'm going to have fun playing with my little plastic dolls and dreaming up cool storylines for RPG sessions. Hi, I'm 26 and spend hundreds (perhaps thousands?) of dollars on little plastic fantasy dolls/men/action figures to play a game with elves, wizards, goblins, and castles......
It's just funny that every time something new comes out, lots of people who don't welcome it turn around and thoroughly enjoy it when it actually comes out. Sure there may be a hitch here and there to work out or get used to, but how many people said no to 2ed when it came out and then played it? 2ed to 3ed? 3.0 to 3.5? Yes, I do realize there are a few 'grognards' (sp?) here that still play 1ed (and that's ok!), but how many of the naysayers changed to fans when the edition actually came out?
Can someone please post something that'll set "username" (or anyone else) off on a rant.
Was that ranty enough for you? ;o)

Oh and as someone who just re-discovered 3.5 less than 2 years ago. I admit I really like the game, after much bitching. I believe it's human nature to resist change. | ...ok, if Wolf is handing out hugs, we need to be worried...
ON TOPIC:
I started playing D&D with the Red Book basic rules...and quickly moved to 1e (while still using D&D modules)...when 2e came out in 89 (I think), our group adopted it whole-heartedly...I devoured the system, learned it inside and out and modified many of the rules to my liking...and then in 2000 they announced 3.0...I was very, very insistent on not changing (I actually like 2e)...I didn't like the changes - but as it turned out, it was mostly due to the way the munchkins in my area were playing...so in 2007 our group changed to 3.5 - we enjoy it, but for myself it's not as good as 2e...
...as far as 4e goes, I'm abstaining...I see the changes taking D&D as far from the feel and concept of the game I know and love as possible...I'll support the 3rd party companies that continue to produce 3e material - and then when they stop, I'll either create my own or change to Rolemaster (permanently)...
So for my 2cp, the truth about 3.5 vs 4e is simply - it comes down to personal preference and style...not everyone can be pleased by every edition/version of a game... | | Shottglazz "Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand; I don't care, I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me."

I have always felt welcome here. Even way back when I first signed up and no one knew me from anyone. I have never felt alienated. I have always felt that I can hang out and be myself.
I enjoy this site much more now after the big Hordelings/Maxminis turnover. I post a lot more (as often as I can) and I've even started reading/posting in the off topic forum whenever I remember about it
I won't go into specifics or point fingers, but there were people that would make it hard for me to be part of the gang. I've also had mods get on to me via email about silly things just because certain types of people would complain about me. And I'm really not a bad guy trying to cause problems. I'm just a regular dude with a normal sense of humor...but gamers for some reason don't always know a joke when they see it (just like how Username had to defend his humor). D&D websites are the only sites where I see people insist that you use smilies just so they know if you're joking or not haha.
I've had 2 people that used to post here that would email me when buying minis and tell me about how bad they are treated here or how nobody responds to his posts. I started paying attention to one of them & watching his posts and sure enough, people were HARD on the guy. Granted he was foriegn and not the best at making his point using the english language, but he meant well and tried to make friends. That's why he reached out to me and I really felt sorry for him. I guess it just made me lose a lot of respect for the community at that time.
And what's the deal...no one likes my rants? If it wasn't for me then you'd be getting more work done & probably be able to read more useful posts! Oh wait....

This was directed at me, wasn't it? I was just reading along, minding my business... and you had to go and offend me.
There are some things about 4e that I'm unsure about and some things that sound interesting. One of my buddys has been able to collect enough information to put together a combat incounter and we gave it a try this past Saturday. It was fun. I ran a Ranger and man was he a death stick.
I'll give it a try, just as long as one of my buddy's buys the books. My 3.5 books are only a year old, I think that's what is killing me most... such is life.

| | It is in human nature to resist change. And it also doesn't help that many of us put a lot of time and money into 3.5. But the fact is is that there is going to be a 4.0. And soon. It's an inevitability. Whether we as a group accept or fall apart into smaller factions, it is going to happen. I myself would like to run a simple campaign with 4.0 before I make my judgement.
