New Gargyole and Ettin. I still don't like the look of the Ettin. The prepainted reaper figure looks so much better. I don't mind the moss on the new gargoyle.Â

| I think the Gargoyle is ok but I prefer the Blood War version still (which is quite possibly my favourite DDM mini sculpt). I also don't know why we needed another Gargoyle so soon.  The Ettin looks ok as well, although I was one of the (seemingly few) people that liked the old sculpt. He does look like he's spent a little bit too much time in the sun though. Don't Ettins think about skin cancer these days? :-P  Olaf the Stout | | My Trade Thread 12 Trades Completed - Bert the Troll, Keoki, elf_ranger, kalle, Dropbear, twilightraven, SkYlyn3, Monolthicus (x2), qillan_dvra, xuthal, MMT 2007 My Reference Thread | |

| Got it now, so for the websensed
We're coming up to the release of Dungeons of Dread in just a few more weeks. Time is short here, so let's go straight to the miniatures. Enjoy! Gargoyle Our first monster this week is an old favorite -- the Gargoyle, a 9th-level lurker. A lurker is a type of creature that, throughout the course of a battle, switches between an active battle position and a lurking form. This could be as simple as a drow hiding in shadows or an insubstantial ghost walking through a wall. The lurking mode for the Gargoyle is called Stone Form, and it transforms the creature into something similar to a statue. In the skirmish game, this grants the Gargoyle Resist 20 All, which is similar to DR from the previous versions of the game. When a gargoyle in Stone Form would take damage, you add up all the damage applied to it and reduce it by 20. This means an attack that deals 10 + 10 Fire damage would have no effect. The fun part of lurking mode is the attack that comes after. A lurker typically deals its best attack when it leaves lurking mode. An invisible creature with Sneak Attack is a great example of this. When the Gargoyle leaves its Stone Form in the skirmish game, it can use its Stonesoul Frenzy attack. In the next round, it can return to the lurking Stone Form. The result is a creature that plays quite a bit differently from a standard brute beater or artillery piece. Ettin Jack-Of-Irons Encounters in 4th Edition are designed to typically include five monsters. Some monsters, like ettins, are exceptions to this rule. As an elite brute, this two-headed monstrosity counts as two creatures when filling out an encounter. Elite creatures need to influence the battle as much as two 'standard' creatures would. The Ettin uses the simplest way -- multiple activations. In the RPG, you roll initiative twice for each ettin. In the skirmish game, you activate it twice per round. That's it for miniatures this week. Make sure you look at the revised, review-ready Night Below stat cards. Next week, mind your skeletons!

| | The gargoyle looks fine, but I'm quite happy with the ones I have. I like the Ettin pretty well and will pick one up for sure even if his arms are too big for his body. It's not like they could've made it worse than the DK version. | | The year: 1994. From out of space comes a runaway planet, hurtling between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction! | | Both sculpts are well done but I think we do not need another gargoyle (we have two,one of them recently released).About the ettin I have to say I prefer the old one but the new could be used as an ettin lord or something like this | | LOVE THIS GIRL | |

| Resist 20 All.... on a flying creature....
Not sure about it in the game. To me, this sounds too much like another option to "cheat". Get some of those guys (Gargoyles), get a quick kill on a weak piece. Park them (the Gargoyles) in any victory area and swap them from time to time if anything can hurt them at all.
Surely, the final stats have yet to be revealed, though. | | Champion of Regis

Ettin looks a thousand times better than the old one, but i still won't be keeping one. Is this the one from the English legend? (Or maybe Welsh) | | 2007 & 2008 Czech Republic Champion 2008 Czech Republic's Player of the Year

I kind of like the new gargoyle, interested to see how it looks in my hands for a final decision.

Wow! I really like them both. I could use more gargolyes with different looks and the same for the Ettin.

| Lots of people like this new ettin better. I actually really like the DK Ettin. That's one of my favorite minis from DK and I like it a lot better than this new version. The new one reminds me too much of a He-Man figure. It'll make a better Ettin to use in my upper planar rpg scenarios though!

Hi Yack and Everyone,
Oh, I like the DK Ettin better too. But that is not a bad thing. Getting a totally differently looking Ettin that in no way takes away from the DK Ettin is really the best of both worlds, something new without diminishing the older one. I doubt we will have that with the Silver Dragon. If you have spare AF LSDs now is the time to get the best deal for them. IMHO it will be dropping in value.
With the gargoyle, this new one may be better. I really like the green colorization. Very nice!
Later,
Mazra
btw The Chainmail Ettin is nice too!

| I still prefer my Chainmail Ettins and the Earth Elemental Gargoyle.
The new Gargoyle does seem to encourage pissy skirmish tactics. Kill a weak critter then use the gargoyles to protect a weak creature hiding in a victory area (stone form to choke off entrance). | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months.
