I've always been adverse to kobolds. Maybe it was that pit trap at the entrance to their lair in Keep of the Borderlands. Yeah, I fell for it (remember that one, old-timers?). But now that my players have reached 8th level, I'm yearning to use some of the great minis for low-level monsters that we've seen in recent sets (especially the Darkmantle) and I'm ready to make friends with those little dog-headed pests. I want to work up a 1st-level 3.5 adventure involving kobolds (perhaps as a holiday for my players; perhaps for some new players; perhaps just for fun). With my extras from the new DDM set (I'm a 3-case guy), I should be able to trade for what I need. I'll have more than enough of the new kobold archers, I'm sure, but wanted to hear from you guys: 1. What are your top three favorite kobold minis? 2. Did you like the 3.5e kobold/dragon relationship (and what is the best resource for this, if you like it)? 3. In your campaign, who keeps kobolds company in their lair? Do they have pets, guardian monsters, etc.? SGB

1. Kobold Sorcerer, Kobold Champion, Kobold Miner (or Soldier)
2. No.
3. Dire Weasel, maybe a Krenshar (scare someone in to a trap), Rust Monster, Oozes (gelatinous), Swarm, Bats, Macetail Behemoth named "Krunk" who's name they chant from a distant high ledge, maybe a Construct or some Undead controlled by the necromantic kobold leader...

Hi xuthal,

Kobolds were almost pointless in 1st edition. Kobolds came into their own with 3.0 with the wonderful Kobold lair in the Sunless Citadel. This is one of the best beginner modules.

To answer your questions:

1.) Meepo, Kobold Sorcerer, Kobold Champion
2.) Yes. It enhanced the back story of Kobolds. I don't have a resourse, but Meepo's appearance in the Dragondown Grotto Fantastic Locations was a pleasant surprise. It helped to tie together the Sunless Citadel with this later adventures in one of my campaigns. The Dragondown Grotto may be the best of the Fantastic Locations. (Meepo is now a regular NPC overlooking the rearing of young dragons for Player Characters in my campaign.)
3.) In addition to the Sunless Citadel set up, I borrowed heavily from Baldur's Gate and make Kobolds a terror with magic flaming arrows prepared by a Kobold Sorcerer. More recently I have them act as servants and fodder for Dragonspawns. I am using the Dragonspawns more and more lately. They can make for some interesting encounters, and it allows me to use the horde of Dragonspawn figurines I have collected. PseudoDragons make good Kobold pets. And obviously the key to their lairs is to make them deviously trap laden.

Later,

Mazra

1. Champion, sorceror, miner
2. Absolutely not
3. Snares, pits, traps and captured big'uns (macetail is a great idea Greyhaze), or maybe just a case of random potions (bull's strength, invis, stoneskin, speed, etc)...

I wrote the framework for a 20th level 3.5 adventure featuring a lair full of kobolds but never flushed out all the stats or actually playtested. Was going to use it for a Dungeon Mag adventure submission at some point. Basically the lair was a crystaline tower located on a planar nexus where a kobold archmage was doing research. I couldn't wait to throw Kobold Fighter 18's with vorpal swords at my party backed by kobold high priests their planar allies.

Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested!

Thanks for the replies. Yes, the Macetail is a great idea. I love the idea of those little guys harboring a real beast for a pet.

Looks like I'll be trading for a bunch of kobolds once my cases arrive . . .

sorry, missed the other two bits.

2. Somewhat. read Mongoose Publishing's Dragon Magic for an interesting take on it.

3. Mostly, just regualr animals, but occassionally, depending on the tribe, they'll have various Magical beasts if they can steal the eggs.

1) Kobold Miner, Kobold Champion, Kobold Sorcerer - in no particular order.

2) yes and no...I still am a fan of the older dog-like kobold simply because it brings back memories. With the passing of Gary Gygax I've been a bit more nonstalgic for the old school D&D I remember from my younger gaming days. Still though, I do like the fact that WoTC gave the kobold a very rich backstory which is easy to fit into a campaign. I'm planning a campaign (when I finally have the time to make one up!) in which I would like the kobold to be an available character race. Currently I have yet to decide one way or another which 'version' I'll stick with, or if the relationship to dragons will be there as well.

3) A kobold lair/cave would have traps of course. As for monsters they would keep/train, I am a big fan of:

Dire Weasles - good mounts for kobolds
Mimics - fits in to the trap thing
Green Slime - nothing like a good ol' pit trap full of it!
Dire Bats - a flying kobold!!!???

In my upcoming campaign, I plan on having a few kobold cities even. I have yet to decide exactly who their allies would be. The more civilized kobold societies would tend more towards lawful neutral, while there will still be some of the more remote tribes in the wilderness that will occasionally be Lawful Evil...in fact I've toyed with creating a subrace of kobolds whose relationship with the civilized ones would be about that of the relationship between Dunwich and the rest of the 'modern' world in a Lovecraftian setting. I just get a kick out of the idea of a bunch of civilized kobolds...and then you find a tribe of inbred, very superstitious and degenerate types somewhere. I dunno, I've yet to really hammer out the details.

Even at low level they can be a challenge.  Hit and run tactics in the underdark with small tunnels perched throughout the walls tossing alchemist fire and such and then scrambling back through their numerous small cave openings.  Nothing wrong with some oil on the floor and then a toss of a torch.  Just keep them moving and have the players panic when they step upon their numerous traps placed throughout.  Kobold sorcerer with a fireball and such just makes it worse.

As you may have noticed I have done this before and my group is always wary of these little pests, but do not consider them by this term.  They consider them a big time threat!

Give me more MIND FLAYERS!

I like to use kobolds as opportunists that can find a niche nearly anywhere, be it in the sewers, an abandonded mine, or a stretch of wilderness occupied by a more powerful monster oblivious to their presence.

1. Kobold Soldier, Kobold Miner, Kobold Sorcerer (probably in that order)
2. No. Well, I can accept that the kobolds would like to see some sort of relation there...
3. Whatever sort of critter they can safely contain and incorporate into their traps (carrion crawlers maybe).

Dragon Mountain was a 2nd edition dungeon crawl that really brought kobolds to light for me.

Those poison arrow little B*****s cause us more character lives than anything in the entire campaign. Facing hundreds of 1st level runts each armed with a crossbow with poison arrows (make your save suffer 20 damage/fail your save and die) was to this day my worst experience as a player in D&D. Everybody dying and then being brought back and then dying again at the hands of those little pests was so demoralizing for the group the campaign ended right after that adventure. You spend 12 levels building up your uber character only to have him cut down repeatedly by 1st level kobolds went a long way towards killing all interest in that game. One member of the group never played roleplaying games again.

Kobolds...gotta hate'em.

Kobolds can be nasty as hell if played properly. Once had two PCs polymorphed into goldfish by a Kobold sorceror.

I made the mistake of saying in front of my DM that I thought kobolds were useless.

My friends once wanted to try old-school 1E gaming. I DM'd. 2nd encounter, at about 3rd level, 100 kobolds with Short bows. They went back to 3.5 after that.

Scariest thing in 1E- 100 kobolds with shortbows, and the auto-crit rules.
