Hello all!

Well, I've got the poster in hand, and thus have my first real good look at all the figures.  Here are my impressions.  Caveats:  I've been collecting since Harbinger, and thus have a LOT of minis.  Also, I mostly get minis for RPG, and we're sticking with 3.5 for the foreseeable future.  Here we go:

1.  Dwarf Warlord -- Nice looking Dwarf w/ Axe, or perhaps Hammer.  I have both already, although admittedly not as nice.  One, please.
2.  Angel of Valor -- Ick.  Don't use angels much, and I wouldn't use this mess.  None.
3.  Cleric of Pelor -- Nice Sun Priest.  I've got Sun Priests.  One, please.
4.  Halfling Paladin -- This will actually be a good PC mini for one of our campaigns.  Still, one, please.
5.  Young Silver Dragon -- To paraphrase the Frenchmen, I've already got one.  But I may keep this if I pull it.
6.  Elf Archer -- Ah, Elf w/ Bow.  I've got a bunch already, but I'll take a few more.
7.  Death Knight -- At least we know what's going to happen to Obould when he dies...  One, please, 'cuz variety is good for high-level undead.
8.  Orc Raider -- I've got more orcs than you can shake a stick at, but a few more are always welcome.
9.  Young Red Dragon -- Looks very nice, and one will be a good addition to my dragon menagerie.
10.  Gargoyle -- Boy, I've got a lot of these.  I may use the EEG for "Gargoyle in repose" and this one for "Gargoyle in action."
11.  Oni -- Looks good, but I still yearn for the Naginata-wielding bad dude from the 1st edition Monster Manual.  The one time I NEED something to be inspired by Japanese art...  One, please.
12.  Chillborn -- Zombie variety is always nice, but these look a little too niche.  Just a few.
13.  Drow Spiderguard -- I've got a lot of Elves of Color.  Just a couple.
14.  Eye of Flame -- I need lots of Beholder variety, since no two are alike.  One, please.
15.  Immolith -- Um, no.  Looks silly with the Jazz Hands, and there are other, cooler, demons I can use.
16.  Shadow Demon -- Long-awaited.  Gimme a half-dozen, at least.
17.  Warrior Wight -- I've got armored undead.  I'll take a few, though.
18.  Howling Hag -- I wish I could have a large hag, for when my conjuror polymorphs.  It's a nice sculpt, though, so I'll take a coven of three.
19.  Magma Brute -- Hmmm.  I have enough large elementals, especially firey ones.  Maybe one or two.
20.  Vrock -- I've already got a flock o' Vrock, but 2-3 of these bad boys would fill it out nicely.Â
21.  Ascendant Hellsword -- Meh.  Nice half-demon.  I'll keep it if I pull it.
22.  Rakshasa Baron -- Won't turn down a different Rak.  Like the sculpt.
23.  Vampire Spawn -- Don't like the Y-M-C-A pose.  Just a few, for variety.
24.  Champ of Baphomet -- Not too fond of a Minotaur without a Labrys, but the hammer looks OK.  I'll takle one or two.
25.  Balhannoth -- I always thought this one would be difficult to cast in a mini, and I was right.  One, 'cuz I wanna use the monster, but I'm not in love with the scuplt.
26 -- Mind Flayer Scourge -- As with Beholders and Death Knights, variety is good.  Gimme one.
27 -- Trog Bonecrusher -- I don't like the sculpt, but one of our DMs likes odd reptilians, so I'll take some.
28 -- Vampire Vizier -- Gimme variety.  One, please.
29 -- Ice Archon -- My jury is still out on archons.  I'll take one for now.
30 -- Lamia -- I may actually warm to the new Lamia.  I'll take one in the meantime.
31 -- Gnoll Marauder -- I've got a lot of Gnolls.  The spear is nice, though.  I'll take half a dozen.
32 -- Bugbear Headhunter -- Nice bugbear, but the head is a bit much, and makes it less utilitarian.  Just a few.
33 -- Dwarf Shieldmaiden -- Yeah, yeah, it's a nice sculpt.  But it's still a Dwarf w/ Hammer.  Should have been a rare.  One.
34 -- Goblin Picador -- More gobbos are nice, but I gotta lotta gobbos.  Half-dozen.
35 -- Human Fighter -- Dude w/ sword.  Nice sculpt, but just a few.
36 -- Iron Defender -- A metal dog.  Hm.  I'll take a few.
37 -- Dire Wolf -- I have many of these.  And I like spiky bits.  Gimme a few.
38 -- Ettin Jack-of-Irons -- Nice.  Gimme a couple.
39 -- Everfrost Ranger -- His bare arms are to show how rugged he is.  Meh.  Gimme one.
40 -- Griffon -- Killer pose, meh paint job.  Still, 2 or 3 would fill out my flock nicely.
41 -- Kobold Archer -- Gotta lotta kobolds.  But these have BOWS!  Gleee!  Yum, yum, gimme some!
42 -- Wyvern -- Different look, but I'll have to see it in hand, it's so dark.Â
43 -- Defiant Rake -- Nice mini, but why would I need more than one?
44 -- Emerald Orb Wizard -- See 43 above.
45 -- Grick -- I'm not as down on this sculpt as others are.  Gimme a few to supplement my pack.
46 -- Spectral Magelord -- Wa?  I am not excited by this mini.
47 -- Tiefling Warlock -- Another Tiefling.  Meh.  One.
48 -- Warforged Infiltrator -- See above, with "warforged" for "tiefling"
49 -- Runecarved Eidolon -- Double wa?  Could be a golem?
50 -- Drow Wand Mage -- Nice sculpt.  Just need one.
51 -- Shade Knight -- Transparent Guy w/ Sword.  Could be a ghost?  I'm not feelin' it.
52 -- Skeletal Tomb Guardian -- I actually have a use for 4-armed skellies in my game.  Hopefully my Valued Trading Partners will despise it.
53 -- Bulette -- Aw, ain't it precious?  And shouldn't they be aquatic, now that Halflings are river rats?  I'll take a couple.
54 -- Deathjump Spider -- I'm a sucker for spiders.  Gimme a half dozen.
55 -- Fen Hydra -- I'm actually grooving on this throwback to the original Greek myth.  Won't need more than a couple, though.
56 -- Giant Centipede -- YES!!! GIMME dat Bigbug!
57 -- Hook Horror -- Hellooooo Valued Trading Partners!
58 -- Shadowhunter Bat -- Hmmm.  Things are not finishing strong.  If I ran a Call of Cthulhu campaign, I'd need Nightgaunts.  For D&D?  Not so much.
59 -- Spectral Panther -- What a cute li'l Hellkitten!  I'll probably take a few.Â
60 -- Bralani -- Ah, an Elf-LIKE Dude w/ Bow.  How... innovative.  Still, it's nice, and I'll keep one.

All in all, a nice set, but no IT MUST BE MINE! reactions, except perhaps for the quadro-manual skellies.  Then again, maybe I just have too many minis.

The Against the Giants boxes are at the bottom.  Looks like a Noble Efreet, a Huge Red Dragon, and one of those big Fire Titan thingies.

::Cough, Cough:: Call of Cthulhu gaming.Â

I'm still undecided if I want a full case for this set.  There are however quite a few nice critters for my dark fantasy games.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

The local FLGS gave me a poster yesterday; sorry, I don't have a scanner, so I can't post pics. However, I think it's a good set overall, with only a few duds. I use minis only for rpg, so I can't comment on their skirmish usefulness.

1. Dwarf Warlord, excellent sculpt, but why paint him like a duergar? I'll have to fix that....
2. Angel of Valor. DUD! Reeks of Dreamblade. Whoever thought this is how angels should look needs to be sacked.
3. Cleric of Pelor. Awesome sculpt; hope the paint job in hand is as nice as this pic.
4. Halfling Paladin. Great pc mini. If he stood up straight, he'd be as tall as the cleric, so could pass for a human/elf pc.
5. Silver Dragon. Scaly goodness!!!
6. Elf Archer. Blah common.
7. Death Knight. Blah pose but a useful mini.
8. Orc Raider. A decent orc common.
9. Red Dragon. Even more scaly goodness! Why couldn't they get the look of the starter green dragon right?
10. Gargoyle. Good looking mini, useful in rpg.
11. Oni. Nice sculpt. I don't have a need for it, but I like it.
12. Chillborn. Odd looking zombie, but zombies are always nice to have.
13. Drow Spiderguard. Nice uncommon; looking forward to adding them to my drow forces.
14. Beholder. Hate the new beholder design, but it's a good sculpt.
15. Immolith. The WTF of the set. More Dreamblade spillover and perhaps the worst concept ever in DDM.
16. Shadow Demon. Highly useful mini; i'll want two or three.
17. Warrior Wight. Cool armored undead!
18. Howling Hag. Finally, a cool looking hag!
19. Magma Brute. How silly looking!
20. Vrock. I will have to get three!
21. Ascendant Hellsword. Nice BBEG mini; but why give him a spear instead of a sword?
22. Rakshasa Baron. Nice sculpt! I don't use Rakshasa but he'll make a lot of gamemasters happy.
23. Vampire Spawn. Why do they sculpt vampire spawn so poorly? Blah common.
24. Champion of Baphomet. One day WOTC will sculpt a good minotaur, but not today.....
25. Balhannoth. I'll use it for Call of C'Thulhu!
26. Mind Flayer Scourge. Great mini, but when will we see an Uncommon mindflayer? Can't be that hard to design.
27. Troglodyte Bonecrusher. Somewhere, Troglodytes are planning a defamation lawsuit. Terrible design, blah paint job.
28. Vampire Vizier. Nothing exceptional looking, but a nice sculpt overall.
29. Ice Archon. I'm not a fan of the elemental archon concepts 4E is introducing. No, sir; don't like it.
30. Lamia. As a lamia, it sucks! But it makes a great Vermin Lord.
31. Gnoll Marauder. Solid common mini; very useful.
32. Bugbear Headreaver. Cool sculpt; will make a great leader for all my Bugbear Footpads!
33. Dwarf Shieldmaiden. I like her, but why is she hunched over as though looking for a lost contact lens?
34. Goblin Picador. Goblins are always welcome!
35. Human Fighter. Another solid pc figure.
36. Iron Defender. They can give us this lame thing and not a war dog?
37. Dire Wolf. Yes! I'll collect a pack of them as I never liked the spikey concept for dire animals.
38. Ettin. Goofy looking, but useful.
39. Everfrost Ranger. Another good pc mini!
40. Griffin. They've done better griffins.
41. Kobold Archer. Another welcomed humaniod!
42. Wyvern. Looks better than the fiendish chicken they previously released as a wyvern.
43. Defiant Rake. Nice pose but the face seems to lack any detail. Good npc figure.
44. Emerald Orb Wizard. Another good pc mini.
45. Grick. Dud. I've got plenty of the superior gricks from the previous release.
46. Spectral Magelord. Nice fig!
47. Tiefling Warlock. Don't use tieflings; useless to me.
48. Warforged Infiltrator. Don't use warforged; useless to me.
49. Runecarved Eidolon. meh.
50. Drow Wand Mage. Male drow caster! Thank you, WOTC.
51. Shade Knight. I'll find lots of uses for this.
52. Skeletal Tomb Guardian. An ok mini; don't want it.
53. Bulette. How cute!  Great uncommon sculpt and paint job.
54. Deathjump Spider. Creepy crawlies are always useful.
55. Fen Hydra. Lackluster sculpt with a decent paintjob; wish it had legs....
56. Giant Centipede. Creepy crawlies are always useful.
57. Hook Horror. The previous version is far superior to this thing.
58. Shadowhunter Bat. Nice; will want a few of these!
59. Spectral Panther. Nice kitty!
60. Bralani. An ok figure, but he forgot his pants.

Regards,

V

1. Dwarf Warlord - Sweet! Looks like a duergar though. I'll take 2.
2. Angel of Valor - Change the swords and wings. Bleh. 1 only.
3. Cleric of Pelor - Pretty cool. I'll take 2.
4. Halfling Paladin - Meh. 4 since it's a common.
5. Young Silver Dragon - Looks nice! 1 because it's rare.
6. Elf Archer - Should compliment my Wild Elf Warsingers for a wild elf war party. 6 please.
7. Death Knight - Updated Skeletor. 1 only.
8. Orc Raider - I hope it looks better in hand. The WD common orcs looked great compared to this. 6 like all other common orcs.
9. Young Red Dragon - Not sure I like the pose. I'll take one.
10. Gargoyle - Cool, but I like the BW one better. 4 for me.
11. Oni - Awesome! 1 like all other rares.
12. Chillborn - Pretty cool. The little things sticking out of the back of his head are creepy looking. 6 like all other common zombies.
13. Drow Spider Guard - Bleh! Looks like a drow stole the Bat suit! 4 only.
14. Eye of Flame - Pretty cool. I like the variation among beholders. Can't wait to see an umteplated 4.0 one. 1 please.
15. Immolith - Would have looked a lot better w/o hands and the head painted as a skull. I'll take 1.
16. Shadow Demon - Pretty cool. 4 please.
17. Warrior Wight - Love how the face looks. 2 please.
18. Howling Hag - Looks great! Doubles as a banshee! 2 please.
19. Magma Brute - Eh, hope he looks better in hand. 4 like all other uncommon elementals.
20. Vrock - MUCH better than the original one. 1 please.
21. Ascendant Hellsword - Meh on double sword. Cool for a neat looking humanoid devil. 1 like all other rares.
22. Rakshasa Baron - OK now, time to make human/elf/dwarf nobles! 1 please.
23. Vampire Spawn - I generally like it. 6 for me.
24. Champion of Baphomet - A long awaited minotaur and it's rare and doesn't look that good. Want an uncommon one (feral doesn't count). 1 only.
25. Balhannoth - I like it! If I ever get my Hellgate/Doom/Sci-fi game going, he will be a BBEG. 1 please.
26. Mind Flayer Scourge - Looks really shiney and not quite oozy. Disappointed in the color scheme. 1 only.
27. Troglodyte Bonecrusher - I'm a bit undecided on this one. Just a drastic turn on something I am used to. 10 please.
28. Vampire Vizier - Very cool, but wish he didn't have a sword. 1 please.
29. Ice Archon - The head and upper body are straight out of Tron! 4 please.
30. Lamia - A lamia by any other one would still be as cool. Very nice! 1 please.
31. Gnoll Marauder - Not the best common gnoll, but not bad. I'll take 10.
32. Bugbear Headreaver - Dislike the head in his hand. Kind of cuts down on the utility of the mini. 4 please.
33. Dwarf Shieldmaiden - MUCH better looking that the XP photos. I think I'll take 4.
34. Goblin Picador - Nice! 10 please.
35. Human Fighter - I dig it! If he had a scimitar, he would be great in a desert campaign. I think I'll go with 2. Maybe 4.
36. Iron Defender - Nice little surprise and pet for an Eberron artificer. 6 please.
37. Dire Wolf - Looks cool, but I like the UH one better and would rather have had a saber toothed cat. I'll take 6.
38. Ettin Jack-of-Irons - By the power of Greyskull!!! 1 please.
39. Everfrost Ranger - Yussssss! Axe and sword! Now only to make a ranger type with a tomahawk and long knife (picky I know). 2 please.
40. Griffon - Points for a cool pose. Points off for the color scheme! 1 please.
41. Kobold Archer - Me gusta! 10 please.
42. Wyvern - I dunno...just dunno. 1 only.
43. Defiant Rake - To go along with my nappy hoe? 2 please.
44. Emerald Orb Wizard - Been excited for this guy since seeing him in the rulebook. Very nice! 1 please.
45. Grick - I much prefer the GoL one. The placement of the tentacles on this one make it look goofy. 10 for a swarm.
46. Spectral Magelord - I can't tell. 1 please.
47. Tiefling Warlock - Not really big on tieflings. 2 please.
48. Warforged Infiltrator - Dr. Doom! 2 only.
49. Runecarved Eidolon - It's the new clay golem! 1 please.
50. Drow Wand Mage - Very cool. Much better than the drow wizard. 4 please.
51. Shade Knight - This guy is really cool looking. I'll take 4.
52. Skeletal Tomb Guardian - Me likey! 1 please.
53. Bulette - Not much of a fan of this one or the GoL one. 2 please.
54. Deathjump Spider - Nice. I think I like it better than the UD one. 10 please.
55. Fen Hydra - Sweet! I like it! 1 please.
56. Giant Centipede - Finally!!! I'll take 10.
57. Hook Horror - Umm...I dunno yet. Looks a bit too much like Foghorn Leghorn. Glad it's Uc though. 4 please.
58. Shadowhunter Bat - Awesome! 4 please.
59. Spectral Panther - Very cool. 4 please.
60. Bralani - Eh. Meh. 1 please.

Overall, it's an ok set. I just think I am spoiled with the great pieces from BW, UH & NB!

The Red Light District

03/17/2008 6:23 PM
I'll just go over the ones that I changed my mind on, or at least wavered my opinion:

Dwarf Warlord- Kinda regretting pre-ordering this guy. His weapon looks silly. Is he a Duergar?

Young Red Dragon- I'm not one to usually complain about overhang, or oversized minis in general, but this takes it to a whole new level. I guess I'll have to pony up some tradebait for an old LRD after all.

Gargoyle- I may pick up a few and put them on large bases.

Warrior Wight- Almost preordered a handful, but held off. Now I may get one if any. Just not feeling this one.

Rakshasa Baron- Prolly gonna pick one of these up now.

Mind Flayer Scourge- I think I'm gonna pass on this one and I love mind flayers.

Wyvern- Still can't see it good enough to know if I want one....looks promising though.

Emerald Orb Wizard- Got fooled by the rulebook paint master and was planning on picking one up when it went down to $2-3. Not now.

Shade Knight- gonna have to up the preorder on this guy by a couple/few.

All in all, the poster changed my mind to want more on 3 minis, changed it negatively on 5 and further entrenched the Wyvern on the fence.

Eye dun no why youse guys think im not relly a person im jimgang from canada but im moving to cali as soon as i get a master card

Was there a light, enchantingly bright, A Question, just how did it end?
Just let me sift through your calm remains, And tear you away from your skin.

All right, at the risk of getting piles of mockery heaped upon me. . .

I think the Immolith looks REALLY cool.  And my rpg group has recently acquired scads of new Elemental PC's in all sorts of combinations.  This guy is perfect for representing anything with a Fire, Darkness, or Light component.  If you've got one (or more) you want to unload, email me, since I want at least 3.

Cheers,

I'm really disappointed about the Dwarf Warlord. One of my most anticipated minis until I saw him having grey skin. Maybe I just change my anticipation of getting a dwarf leader into new anticipation: I'll get a Duergar king!!! Good use for underdark campaigns!

The Large Silver Dragon is just amazing. My favourite dragon, and I couldn't afford the the old large silver.

Regarding Rares in general, I just don't see many must-haves. The two dragons are actually the only two.
The Rares I wouldn't mind to pull but would not buy as singles: Raksasa, Mind Flayer, Minotaur, Death Knight.
Other than that, I'm pretty low on all rares in the set and look more forward to some great uncommons.

Very cheap set for me which is gonna make my wife happy. ;)

I just want one Immolith.  It will make a nice demon for my Stormbringer games.

My overall impression from looking at the poster is that, despite an impressively good selection of monsters, the paint jobs look generally pretty bad...bad enough to make me unexcited about many of the minis. There are some exceptions which look really good (vrock, I'm looking at you).

Man, I feel the opposite...somewhat. There are a few rares that I'd like which are currently somewhat pricey. The two dragons, the Vrock, the Eye of Flame come to mind. I've so far got a bit over $120 in minis I'd like to buy but that may change as I'll wait to see some in-hand before going too nuts over purchases.

Admittedly, some of the paint looks horrid, but not much can compete with some of the nastiness in Night Below (Hierophant of the Seventh Wind I'm looking at you!). The poster scans go a long ways towards cluing me in on what I might want but I also do not have very high faith in WoTC's ability to take good photos of their minis. Too many times in the past I've seen a spoiler picture on their site which has (due to bad camera angles) looked dorky when the in-hand looks good...or vice versa.

Bottom Line For Me:

1. Dwarf Warlord -- Well, it is a bit different for a dwarf in that it looks like a king...one please.

2. Angel of Valor -- Not a fan of the new angels at all...the wings are what actually kills interest for me - too fake-metal looking. One for set completion only.

3. Cleric of Pelor -- Cool PC/NPC type but, as with all humans, dwarves, elves, halflings, etc. I've got lots already. One please.

4. Halfling Paladin -- See #3.

5. Young Silver Dragon -- HOLY GREAT-LOOKING MINI BATMAN! I'll most certainly take one, but probably only need one.

6. Elf Archer -- Archers are cool, though another PC/NPC type rates mostly disinterest from me. Maybe 4-5 would be nice to form a company of archers with.

7. Death Knight -- Undead are always welcome (usually) so having another Death Knight is good with me. One only though since the sculpt/paint is kinda so-so.

8. Orc Raider -- I'll take a couple, but only since they are a) an orc, and b) common. There have been much better C/UC orcs in past sets.

9. Young Red Dragon -- SUPERB! Though it does look like the overhang on this mini is major. I'll still take one, possibly two though it may be better as trade fodder if I get a second one.

10. Gargoyle -- I do like the sculpt, hate the size (almost as big as several of the Larges). I'm happy with my BW gargoyles so probably 2 of these for me.

11. Oni -- Undecided...I've seen pictures where this guy looks great, and others where he looks like total dung. I'll take one for the set of course, but I'll wait to see in-hand before deciding on keeping others.

12. Chillborn -- Common, undead, zombie...probably 3-5 of these since there's always a use for these guys.

13. Drow Spiderguard -- More drow are OK, though I probably only will want 1-2 of these since I have a wide assortment of drow already.

14. Eye of Flame -- 2 for sure... I love Beholders and (except for Gauth) I have 2 of each so far anyways.

15. Immolith -- Cool looking mini...except for the no-arm look. I'll take one for the set, but will hold off until I see it in-hand before decision on if I want more than one.

16. Shadow Demon -- Yeah, give me a half-dozen at least! Great looking mini!

17. Warrior Wight -- Unusual looking undead. I'll take 3-4 of them for sure.

18. Howling Hag -- As stated by previous posters, a coven of 3 will do nicely...looking forward to repainting at least one of them!

19. Magma Brute -- Cool idea, but it looks like it was sculpted from leftover clay in about 10 minutes. Perhaps it will look better in-hand. I'll want at least 2...one for set and one to try and salvage with a repaint.

20. Vrock -- ZOMFG! Great Mini!!! I'd happily take 4-6 of these, though I'll probably trade duplicates off at first since I'm predicting that these will be hot items in trades initially.

21. Ascendant Hellsword -- On the fence with this guy...he looks cool, though I probably won't have a whole lot of use for him. One please.

22. Rakshasa Baron -- Looks much better in the poster pics than the ones I've seen so far. Still, I'll probably only take 2 and call it good.

23. Vampire Spawn -- OK, I never thought I'd be saying that there is an undead I don't really want, but this one is it. What's with the Michael Jackson Thriller look? One for set completion and thats it!

24. Champ of Baphomet -- Sorta cool, though the hammer is about dorky looking. I may eventually try a repaint and weapon swap if I get a spare of this guy. Till then, one only.

25. Balhannoth -- I'd like 2 of this guy eventually - one for set, one for repainting.

26 -- Mind Flayer Scourge -- Not a fan of the color scheme... too bright, which is a shame since the sculpt looks nice. I'll take a few, but only since my stock of Mind Flayers is low currently.

27 -- Trog Bonecrusher -- Doesn't look like a Troglodyte to me, but I might have a use for this one. 3-4 is sufficient but only because it is common.

28 -- Vampire Vizier -- 1 please. I've got lots of vampires already.

29 -- Ice Archon -- Not a huge fan of the archons in RPG, but this one at least looks cooler than his Flame counterpart. I'd take a couple I guess.

30 -- Lamia -- One please. Nice concept, but I just can't see a whole lot of use for multiples.

31 -- Gnoll Marauder -- Gnoll with spear...I'll take 3-4.

32 -- Bugbear Headhunter -- Props for the head! I'll take 3-4.

33 -- Dwarf Shieldmaiden -- Normally I don't care for PC/NPC types, but I do like the idea that there is finally a female dwarf... long overdue, but still I'd only take 1, possibly 2.

34 -- Goblin Picador -- Goblins...I'd take 3-4.

35 -- Human Fighter -- See #3.

36 -- Iron Defender -- Well, I'd have much rather seen a war dog or a plain ol' dog than this guy, but I'll probably keep a few of these.

37 -- Dire Wolf -- Yay Dire Wolf, I'll take 3-4...now quit making more uncommon Dire Wolves WoTC!

38 -- Ettin Jack-of-Irons -- One for the set, but I'm in the "looks too much like a He-Man Action Figure" crowd.

39 -- Everfrost Ranger -- A cool PC/NPC mini, but still only interested in 1.

40 -- Griffon -- This one is similar to the Oni...I've seen it look good in some photos, and others it has looked horrible. Only 1 for now, though I might change my mind once I have one in-hand.

41 -- Kobold Archer -- Finally a Kobold with a BOW! I'll take 6-8 please.

42 -- Wyvern -- Might be nice looking...I'll take one for sure.

43 -- Defiant Rake -- See #39.

44 -- Emerald Orb Wizard -- Finally a wizard with an orb instead of a staff/wand! Only one though since it is rare.

45 -- Grick -- This one almost makes me want to break my set collecting habits! Only one please! Even the Wrackspawn was better than this POC!

46 -- Spectral Magelord -- Could be really cool looking, though it is hard to tell real detail so far. I'll most certainly want one, perhaps more once seen in-hand.

47 -- Tiefling Warlock -- ENOUGH WITH THE TIEFLINGS ALREADY! One for the set and that's it.

48 -- Warforged Infiltrator -- Not real up on Warforged, though since we do have one Ebberron campaign I'd take one or two perhaps.

49 -- Runecarved Eidolon -- No way this could ever be as cool as the picture in the book from what I've seen (MM2??). One only, and an unhappy one at that since it is rare. Looks like this one may be the Phoelarch of the set to me.

50 -- Drow Wand Mage -- See #13.

51 -- Shade Knight -- WOW, I want multiples! I'd happily take at least 6-8.

52 -- Skeletal Tomb Guardian -- I'd love to eventually get 2-3 of these guys. They remind me of the old-school bone golems.

53 -- Bulette -- Large size?? WTF?? OK, since it IS a Land Shark I'll take a couple, perhaps I can use them for Young Bullettes or something...

54 -- Deathjump Spider -- Spiders!!! WOOT!!! I'll take at least 6.

55 -- Fen Hydra -- I love this sculpt, the paint not as much. Still, I'll only have a use for 1 anyways...

56 -- Giant Centipede -- This one looks great...and long-awaited too! I'll take at least 4-6.

57 -- Hook Horror -- OK, I really do not like his oversized, dorky-looking arms. I'll take one for the set, and perhaps one additional if I can find good replacement claws to do a mod/repaint with.

58 -- Shadowhunter Bat -- This one could be cool looking so I may want 2-3. In-hand will decide the final judgement for me.

59 -- Spectral Panther -- Looks more like a lion (with the mane) to me, but I'd take a couple to make a pride out of.

60 -- Bralani -- Since it lumps in (generally) with the PC/NPC minis...and it is rare to boot I'll only want one of these for the set.

Here's my impression. WotC has decided it's time for me to stop spending my money. First, I have no interest in buying 4th edition D&D books. 2nd, I'm not sure I want to bother with the new miniatures rules. And third, I have so many of these miniatures in their previous incarnation, I don't need to buy this set. Maybe I'll get a few singles of the new monsters.

Well it looks like the few advance cases will be more than enough with just the need to fill in the gaps...does make the collecting part less costly now...

crawls back to the DDO mill.......

Built the addition for this addiction, now on to the "gaming table" project....

Hi Everyone,

I took a few minutes to really look over the DuD poster. The final determination will be when we hold them in our hands, but this set really isn't a dud. Most of the scupts are very different from previous adaptations. From a purely RPG perspective, I like a variety of looks on a battle map. The new Ettin looks a little more intelligent than the old one, and may make a good leader of Ettins. Two different looking young Red Dragons will look good in a challenging mid-level encounter. Another good challenge would be the now three different looks I have for Death Knights. Death Knights should all look unique anyway. Another Grick, another Gargolye, a very ugly Beholder, a putrid mind flayer, another Hook Horror, Rakshasa, a beauty of a Vrock, a Magma Brute to go with the Hurler, and a throw-back wyvern will all look good on my gaming table. How about two different Bulettes to come storming out of the ground after your player characters? One could be bad enough!

Then we have a number of new monsters not seen before in the minis. When the Fire Archon first came out, I thought what a silly monster. It looked like something out of a bad sci-fi movie. But after reading the back story at WotC, I began to see uses for this new type of monster. They could be quite the addition to a fire based encounter. The same looks to be true with the Ice Archon. Maybe the Immolith will fall into this category too. I would like to see the RPG stats for the Ascendant Hellsword. The Balhannoth may not be the best sculpt, but it is a ugly monster anyway. Then there is the Spectral Magelord, the Runecarved Eidolon. Fen Hydra and Shadowhunter bat would all be new encounters for my PCs. I like throwing new things at them. They don't know what to do. hehehe

And we will finally get a Giant Centipede and a Shadow Demon. Not to mention, but to mention we are getting the Shade Knight and Spectral Panther.

Overall it is really not that bad. True, it is no Bloodwar set, but at least WotC has been sensible enought not to re-release Harbingers or Archfiends sculpts.

Later,

Mazra

I am very pleased we are finally getting the Medium giant centipede. That is one I had been awaiting a long time. I still would also like to get a Large giant centipede, and hopefully this time we won't have to wait as long for the next centipede as we waited for the first one.

Despite many peoples criticisms, I really like the way this sets looks. I've only been collecting and playing for close to two years, and have managed to get my hands on most of the older figures that I wanted, large silver, large red, and large green dragons come to mind, among others. The fact that many of them are being resculpted here doesn't bother me in the least, as variation is always nice!

This set is also fantastic for new players. I've seen it dubbed Harbinger 2, and I think that's not a bad moniker for it. The sheer load of iconic type figures in this set also leads me to believe that many of those icons that we DnD players know and love will remain a key part of the game. So in a roundabout way, I get some faith for DnD 4E out of this set too!

Sometimes it's the really weird pieces like this that we forget about.  They're quite common monsters, especially for relatively low-level adventures, and yet they've been so hard to come by...

I'm still waiting for a Rust Monster.
