| We're up to the penultimate preview for Dungeons of Dread, and that means it's about time for the set to be released. In less than two weeks, you'll have a chance to get your hands on these figures at the Dungeons of Dread prerelease. Check the prerelease schedule to find a game store near you! Skeletal Tomb Guardian This is a collective favorite around the office. I played a game last weekend against this undead, and it's a real brute. While the attacks are a bit lower than other pieces at a similar point cost, they have the potential to deal far more damage. If you roll well, Cascade of Steel can whip out 100 points of damage, and that doesn't include criticals or other bonuses! Anything that increases the chance to hit helps this piece, because Cascade of Steel ends when you miss the target. The most obvious way to gain a bonus to hit, however, is combat advantage, which this creature will always have. Thanks to Multiple Threats, the Skeletal Tomb Guardian automatically gets combat advantage against adjacent creatures. Mind Flayer Scourge Illithids are an iconic monster in Dungeons & Dragons, and here is their first Dungeons of Dread incarnation. This controller has the ability to shut down the enemy with repeated stuns. Clever players should be able to get the most out of its rechargeable Mind Blast cone. In warbands with additional stunning creatures, the Mind Flayer's first Champion effect is likely to see the most use. Teaming the Mind Flayer with a strong brute (such as the Skeletal Tomb Guardian) can really help dish out the damage. Getting an additional +4 attack for one of the Cascade of Steel swings against an automatically stunned opponent is a great way to start. Next week, the final preview for Dungeons of Dread!

| So the Skeletal Tomb Guardian will always swing at +16 (25 damage) up to 4 times?!? Wow. Sounds like a thread for a lot of things with low AC. Wulfgar at 23 could be gone in the blink of an eye.
Shadow Dragons with high AC and Conceal could exclude the four-armed-monster from play, I guess.
Not sure about the Mind Flayer. Without the new 5-foot-step rule, I think he'd be ineffective as soon as based. But now he could be valuable.
Just a general question by the way: Are undead not immun to critical hits anymore? | | Champion of Regis

| The Skeleton looks good, but it's something i'd want about 8 of and I'm just not willing to chase it as a rare.
My guess on the minflayer is that it's like the new beholder, another product of the "revolutionary" CAD design. WotC don't need no stinkin' sculptors. It's pathetic. I love mind flayers and had high hopes for this guy, but it's just bad. Play-Dough blue skin, some silver highlights and that's pretty much it for paint. I cringe every time I see something with a lot of black anymore because I know it's just unpainted. | | Eye dun no why youse guys think im not relly a person im jimgang from canada but im moving to cali as soon as i get a master card -Jimgang So, you stand at your grave, Has your soul yet been taken away? Both sculpts look meh to me. I hope that in person the MFS will look better.
This preview is kinda for nothing, because we already now the whole set...wasted time it seems. So why not start the previews earlier, I think it would be useful for both sides? | | 2007 & 2008 Czech Republic Champion 2008 Czech Republic's Player of the Year

| I have both of these from XP and the sculpts are rock soild.Â
I palyed the Skeletal Tomb Guardian in one of the pre-releases and in one game he rolled like 7 hits (2 were criticals) in two rounds doing like 225 pts of damage and downed an Immoloth and something else. Cascade of Steel is deadly.Â
I saw the Mind Flayer played in a pre-release and he's ok. Still IMO maybe a little over costed.Â

| | CAD (Computer Aided Design) is all done on a computer as opposed to a physical sculpt. It's something they started with this set, though most are still traditional sculpts. They're pushing hard to go this way for all minis. I'm honestly guessing on the Flayer, but looking at it's lack of detail, it seems likely. | | Eye dun no why youse guys think im not relly a person im jimgang from canada but im moving to cali as soon as i get a master card -Jimgang So, you stand at your grave, Has your soul yet been taken away? I couldn't agree more... The colour scheme and sculpt were perfect on the mind flayer telepath, and it's one of my favourite minis. The mind flayer sourge actually has some delicate detail with the silver lining on the black garb, but the colour scheme here makes it look cheap, not to mention those pink globs on the tentacles of the turquoise head.

| Hi Everyone,
I like the skeleton. It reminds of something out of a Ray Harryhausen movie.
I agree with the general sentiment. The Mindflayer is just wrong. The Mindflayer Telepath is much better. Even the Harbinger Mindflayer is a better sculpt, though mine has a lousy paint job. I have been wanting to repaint it for some time.
Later,

| Skeleton is uber cool, I seem to recall one of it in one of the early modules of 1E (unless it was for OD&D...) One is OK, but I'll gladly take a duplicate. Mindflayer is, err, meh. Head colors are strange (did I say ugly ?). I suppose a bit of paint can fix it, but I suck at painting... The rest of the body is OK.

| I could swear that I remember a 2nd ed. Bone Golem looked like the 4-armed skeleton pictured...at least I remember some art in some book/module somewhere in my earlier gaming days that looked like that. I can't say for sure about it being a bone golem, so I'll do some digging through my old 2ed. stuff sometime soon if I get the time. Hopefully I still have it.
On a slightly releated note, is there anyplace that has a good archive of older D&D art from books and modules?

| First off, as for the arm thing, it states in the flavor text "Each sword arm was taken from a skilled soldier.", so presumably this is stitched together from 4 human/humanoid fighters.
As for the CAD design, I hate to break it to ya, Wraithborne, but CAD design allows for a LOT more detail than conventional sculpting. I mean, I work with CAD every day, and I sculpt now and then, and you really just can't do by hand what a machine can do. Otherwise, we'd still be using claymation and hand assembled electronic components. Also, the coloration has noting to do with CAD, unless the plastic itself is colored (probably not economically efficient). | | Yes, I do commissions. Allows for a lot more detail.... maybe, but we're not going to get it. More detail means more time and this is clearly being done as a cost saving measure. We're gonna get polygons like the Beholder with it's flat mouth and Satan Summoning head shape and dull, featureless minis like the Mind Flayer.
As for technology analogies, you can make them all day, but they're ultimately meaningless and irrelevant. Making hand assembled electronics has about as much to do with ddm as the price of a wheel of cheese in Montana and they still make movies today with CGI that looks worse than anything Harryhausen ever thought of doing. Having technology and using it to it's utmost potential are 2 vrey different things and I just don't think they're going to even come close to that potential. | | Eye dun no why youse guys think im not relly a person im jimgang from canada but im moving to cali as soon as i get a master card -Jimgang So, you stand at your grave, Has your soul yet been taken away? | | look wraith, stop being negative, they actually can give us more good detail by saving time and money with the CAD technique.
