| Welcome to the final preview for Dungeons of Dread! It's been
a quick two and a half months, but the wait for the newest set of
miniatures is nearly at an end! The next three weeks hold some exciting
developments for D&D Miniatures. First, be sure to check the schedule for local retail shops hosting prereleases for Dungeons of Dread. If you can't make it to a prerelease event, you won't need to wait long. Over the next couple of weeks, both Dungeons of Dread and the revised D&D Miniatures starter are being released so everyone can play! For this week, we have two figures that you might find in any Dungeons of Dread pack. At common and uncommon, these creatures are quite likely to drop out of your boosters. Ice Archon Two types of elemental archons can be found in the 4th edition Monster Manual. You already have a miniature of the first type with the Fire Archon from Desert of Desolation. In Dungeons of Dread,
you can find the second -- the uncommon Ice Archon. I think this is one
of the best uses of transparent plastic to date -- the clear plastic
really invokes an icy aura to this elemental humanoid miniature. These footsoldiers from the elemental chaos aren't shoehorned into a
single role. In June, you'll be able to use this figure to represent
three different Ice Archons. This soldier looks closest to the level 19
Ice Archon Rimehammer, but DMs will be able to flesh out encounters
with Ice Archon controller and artillery versions.
Iron Defender Homunculi
are magically powered constructs created to maintain a watch. The exact
nature of the homunculus depends on what needs watching -- some
homunculi are adept at guarding areas while others prefer guarding
objects. The Iron Defender is a homunculus created to guard a person. This 3rd-level soldier protects by getting free attacks whenever the
guarded creature is attacked. For the skirmish game, this is handled by
the Defender ability. You may have already seen the Defender ability on
previous creatures such as the Eternal Blade from the redesigned Desert of Desolation figures.
If you haven't, here's how it works -- when someone attacks a different
creature while adjacent to an Iron Defender, that Iron Defender can
immediately attack. This encourages creatures to attack the Iron
Defender before any others; a perfect example of how a soldier should
work.
That's it for the Dungeons of Dread previews! It will be an exciting couple of months with the upcoming release of the new edition of Dungeons & Dragons.
Keep an eye open in this space -- the next set of previews begins in
just a few months. Before you know, it will be time to ramp up your
battles Against the Giants. | | | |

| Ahh the Warforged Dog....in the same set as the Blink Panther....these guys must really hate Zoons. Long story short, it sucks.
The Ice Archon looks decent. I'm not too keen on the new Shoehorned Elementals, but since it's Unc. I may pick up a couple to use as something else. | | The year: 1994. | The Iron Defender, in skirmish, is nice. Finally, a piece with enough speed to get to Victory Areas. With the Mercenary General, he can be Speed 10, which is even more effective.
The Ice Archon is a piece I don't think will have much use in skirmish, but I could be wrong.
I rather like the Ice Archon for RPG. Why not? He's cool looking.

They never said no more elementals. They said they wanted elemental types with more of a purpose than just chilling waiting to be summoned from plane X.Â
I think both of these figs are great for RPG unless some one is specifically looking for a reason to dislike them.  Â
Mechanical critters have long been used (Iron Cobra, Steel predator, Iron golem, MODRONS!) and we didn't have a dog or med. sized 4 legger yet.  It can work as a familiar for a tinker mage, a tomb guardian for an advanced society, a mount for a warforged scout, or a number of other uses. If you can't find a non eberron use for this than you need to work on your DM creativity. Â
Ice Archon is a bit tougher but still can have a few uses. It's a great looking fig to use as is, but could also be an elemental templated devil soldier, a humanoid race with the elemental ice template, a bad ass statue in an ice temple, a spell created effect from an ice mage akin to the old 1st edition shadow monster spells, or a medium Ice elemental with warrior levels. | | Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested! See, that can work with anything.
Just because someone doesn't want to shove something into their campaign because WotC made a mini they think sucks doesn't mean they lack creativity. I can think of several ways to bring Warforged into my homebrew. Doesn't mean I wanna use 'em and doesn't make me any worse (or better) of a DM for choosing not to. | | The year: 1994. Agreed 100%, but its definatly interesting to have a race of cool looking elementals that have specific motivation plan to invade other planes and are gearing up war. You could argue that other races needed to get the same treatment before the elementals but I'm not sure they would look as fricken sweet.

I'm gonna go and disagree here. Iron Golems and Iron Cobras are golems made of metal, which is just a material type for a golem. That doesn't make them any more mechnaical than a flesh or clay golem (imo).
A Modron, kolyarut, steel predator, modrons and warforged are creatures with a mechanical nature, all of which I am very unlikely to use in my campaigns. Living steel creatures and animated steel with sentience just aren't my bag. I'm just gonna use the robot dogs as golems, which they appear to be in the description anyways.
As for the lacking DM creativity comments, kinda low blows. | | Greyhaze's DDM Spoilers Champion of a Medium Dog & then a Darkenbeast , Raistlin Majere, Nightmare WDQ25/60, Warduke WD60/60, Anti-Champion of Guns, "Knight of Bugbears", and Joke Champion of Venger. DM creativity or lack thereof has nothing to do with it. It has everything to do with figures that provide the most utility and long term usage value. These two figures provide neither of those things for me.

Of course there are. If they made all of them in the order of utility, they would have been dry about 3 sets ago, and they'd be making nothing but crap. Desire sells. For the strength of the DDM line, we will never have a perfect set.

| | I disagree. im not saying we need all the core monsters but the stratetgy of reimagining monsters such as the trog wasnt needed. There were no complaints of this monster on how it looked and there are/were plenty of opportunites to release new class types for this monster. How about Trog chieftain or assasin. Same goes with the elementals. Fine they gave us another dire wolf and it looks nice but another dire bear or better tire tiger would have been better. | | The ROCK layeth the smacketh down. Now I am confused! Most everything in these new sets are Neutral with a very few rare Goods and Evils scattered in. Why is the Ice Archon evil when a Fire Archon is neutral? Alignment in this new system is just bizarre.
