| Yesterday the FLGS had the Dungeon of Dread Pre-Release event. As their previous TO and WotC Rep I usually ran the tourneys for the store. Since I am not bothering with DDM 2.0 or DD4E, I did not show up to play. To my surprise no one else did either. The store did its usual level of advertising and what not and we have in the past had 30 players for a Pre-Release Event (though 18 was usual). This time...no one. No one even came in the store to ask about it, or see if they could scam a promo, or even just to see the new figs in person. Nothing.
I realize the local meta has a tendency to buck gaming trends. But, no one?

| That's terrible.
We had a great pre-release event witgh a record turnout of 17 people (14 was the maximum before). Both the old 1.0 crew as a number of new people showed up. The new rules are great to play with and the new set looks awesome.
Happy days,
D.
Edit - Everybody played and stayed to the end (11.00 am - 17.00 pm). I was actually the first to leave right after prizes had been distributed cause of the flu. | | Member of the Bearded Devils Champion of the Huge Spider (WotDQ 46/60), A New Umber Hulk (DoDe 57/60), and the Orog Fighter!

Since I heard that he was here in California this weekend (and it just didn't work out for him to make it to a pre-release here), I wouldn't read too deeply into the fact that he missed the Mesa pre-release.
We had 20 players at the Santa Clara pre-release for DDr, which is up from recent pre-release events if I remember correctly.

It's too bad about there being no players. That would have made me really sad.

Teflon Jeff said that most places were up and one had zero. Here is an analysis of what has been posted: Moloche—zero Dordledum—increase Vanrullz—did not state if up or down or normal Thenameless—normal (below peak) Corim Danex—decrease Stephengroy—decrease Majistral—normal LDS—increase Vrecknidj—good turnout (did not say if increased) Jacksonm—decrease Totals: Zero—One Decrease—Three Normal/unspecified—Three Increase—Two Only two of ten stated there were increases, while four stated they were below, including the one with nobody.
Corrected for Gryfalia's comments. Note that I wasn't saying decrease always meant a significant drop. A decrease is a decrease, just like an increase is an increase. 2-4 people is a swing, though how significant that swing is does relate proportionally to the overall total.

I believe it had a fairly serious effect.
I left the Delegate program based on the presentation at the WotC Delegate Dinner at GenCon. After the presentation I realized I had little confidence in the new direction of this game and the other product lines. Considering the new games they were introducing and and the lackluster support for the old ones weakened my resolve. Upon seeing the early previews of DDM2.0 and DD4E I walked away.
Even having left the program I still stayed up on the game and encouraged people to find out more. I made sure our local players were in touch with the previews that were released and answered any questions that came up about the new rule set. Since I had no reason to hurt the local store I did this with as much aplomb and enthusiasm as I could manage.
We have an active player base of half a dozen people who are happy with DDM 1.0 and see no reason to migrate to the new system. Possibly that number again who will occaisionnaly show up and that have not expressed any interest in 2.0. The 6-8 other players have drifted away from 1.0 and I expected them to be first in line for the new set. What surprised me was that they did not show up to the pre-release. Nor did the players from Jefferson City (30 miles away) and Kirksville (80 miles away) who make special trips for the pre-releases.

| Our LGS that had the prerelease had 16 (with three who dropped before playing and had signed up for the two boosters). Typically, there are 24 or more people at prereleases. This was confirmed by the hobby shop, which was surprised by the low turnout.
I don't play the skirmish game and haven't regularly for a long time. My only two guesses for the low turnout are disinterest in 2.0 and conflicting schedules. However, I didn't talk to anyone who didn't make it, so I have no way of knowing right now what the reasons were. | | "Look to God and live." | Glen Burnie MD, had 13 iirc. That is slightly down from normal. I think alot of the down isnt so much from 2.0 rules as it was from having played alot of DuD at XP. Many of the normal shows that were at XP didnt show. Alot of the excitement for the new set had already been eased.

Three large colleges which account for a majority of the transient player base and sales at the store. I am curious as well and hope my Quote from Daniel is off-base.
As a delegate I did a lot of demos and played a lot of games that quite literally sucked. I alsways got high marks from the stores I demoed at because my job at the time was to get the enthusiasm and fun of the game across to the players. With the new set I have seen little to capture my imagination so I read the rules and answered questions as they arose. Any good community builder would do the same. I pointed people to the proper websites and previews for more glad handing.

I think it was a pretty safe assumption that someone there was badmouthing the 2.0 DCI scene. Apparently it wasn't you, but the 6 regular 1.0 players determined to not move to the new edition would have a substantial effect. Basically if the regulars are going to boycott the new Standard format then the irregulars sure aren't going to show up since there's no longer a guarantee that the number of players will reach critical mass.
Pretty much every edition change for games has a certain amount of dividing of the market. Sounds like central Missouri is likely voting to stick with the old.
So yes they have weighed the new edition, found it wanting, and brought about a rift in the player base. The initial post made it sound like a no-show pre-release was a vindication of the area's assessment of 2.0 and WotC -- that somehow the writing would be on the wall for the future of DDM.

It's possible that many of those college students were either on spring break or just finishing the first week of the term.

| I think if we were measuring the skirmish game, the second prerelease would give a better indicator than the first perhaps. With this one, several may have come out of curiosity. If people are showing up based on whether or not they like 2.0, I would think that some time to play it would show an overall impact better than the first release. We should give it time to see what the general reaction really is before jumping to conclusions.

Grats on killing DDM and D&D in general in your area for a while. Or maybe you just drove all of your regulars to a different store to get away from the bad attitude about a game.
Was slightly up in Howell, MI. Other falling outs have killed some of the other venues near Detroit before 2.0 really came to front.

| I was talking to JQ about the Bloomington IN prerelease and he told me why they were a bit down there, there were more than a few that didn't want to play without seeing the new rulebook. We forget there are quite a few players, both regular and casual, who don't frequent the boards or don't have good computers or internet access. Some of the players were on board for playing 2.0 or at least giving it a chance but not without reading and studying the rulebook in hand and unfortunately the starter didn't come out till a week after the prerelease. We had 8 guys at a sealed tournament yesterday and that is phenomenal for Southern Illinois (would have been 9 but I had to work ). At least 3 of the players were brand new, just bought the starter and wanted to learn to play, one of them took 3rd place | | | |
