That griffon looks horrible.

After seeing that only four rares I want (although Big Red...Dragon that is looks pretty sweet). A lot of uncommons I'll definitely want at least one of. One or two I'd want more than one of.

I added a couple Unc's I was on the fence about to my wants, but removed several rares...I think the Drow Spiderguard has the least paint of any mini ever released.

Would be interesting to see if actual looks of the minis changed other folks lists as well.

The year: 1994. From out of space comes a runaway planet, hurtling between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction! Man's civilization is cast in ruin!
Two thousand years later, Earth is reborn...
A strange new world rises from the old: a world of savagery, super science, and sorcery. But one man bursts his bonds to fight for justice! With his companions Ookla the Mok and Princess Ariel, he pits his strength, his courage, and his fabulous Sunsword against the forces of evil.
He is Thundarr, the Barbarian!

The griffon is a pretty nice sculpt, the paintjob is subpar.

A lot of the other things are really nice though.

I think that award is fiercely protected by the Spider of Lolth...I have one (and seen many more) that is just plain 100% black.

On the set, there are many minis that I like: Ascendant Hellsword, Vampire Vizier, Rakshasa Baron and many more (I'm not THAT strongly attached to 3.5).

Totally agree on the Griffon...way to kill a nice sculpt.

Overall, for me this is an awesome set that will take a noticeable amount of cash from my wallet.

Ascendant Hellsword gets my vote as well. I hope the actual piece retains all the intricacies.
(Dwarf Warlord is my other choice)

The griffon kinda reminds me of some chocolate dessert.

The Defiant Rake and Warrior Wight seem to be pointing at the same thing.

I found the Angel of Valor disappointing. It doesn't strike me at all as angelic. I wonder, will they ever redo the classic angel look on future sets?

wow this set is teribble. its like stunningly bad. this is the first set where there are fewer than 10 minis from the whole set that I'd ever want. The paint jobs are what really makes it looks bad. half the creatures in the set have only 2 colors on them. I doubt if I will even bother to buy anything from this set

It is only my opinion but, for me, this is the worst set ever (for both 2.0 rules and sculpt/paintjob).Griffon, magma brute, wyvern and green dragon are simply an incredibly bad sculpt/paintjob combo. Not to mention the new desing of certain creatures (the new troglodyte is...).But I have to say that the lamia and the new silver dragon are awesome.

The paint jobs look really poor on most of this set, below the standard I'd become accustomed to from DDM. Unfortunately I already ordered two cases and they are on their way, so too late to cancel. Some minis look good, but overall there seems to have been a definite drop in quality. I will hope that they look better in person. But if they look as bad as in the pics, I will hold off on ordering cases next time and wait for reviews from people who have seen them in hand before deciding whether to just order singles.

Distribution remains reliable and I thought the paint jobs were fine given the paint steps economy.

The common/uc/rare distribution was better than most starter sets with only one character race as a common and only a couple character figs in the rare slots.

Things you need large numbers of for encounters were common, things you need few of were rare and things in between were uncommon.

I was on the fence about ordering cases this time but did (2).  Looking at the gallery makes me wish I hadn't.  I am a completist and want every mini.  However, I am starting to have significant reservations in continuing to buy cases if future minis look like this.

The paint jobs look terrible.  There are so many which seem to have 1 or 2 colors and with no shading.  Very disappointed.  I will probably be getting my cases some time next week so then I will be able to comment first hand.  So far...NO GOOD!

I thought it looked pretty nice when I first saw it in pictures, but you're right, it's pathetic in person.  Way too small.

In my opinion, most of the minis look better in hand.

It looks like the gallery pictures were over lit, which lost a lot of real-life shading and details in the process. For example, the centipede actually has a dark grey metallic paint on its upper carapace, even though it looks like unpainted black plastic in the picture.

Ironically, the large scale of the images also emphasis some of the "solid-color" areas a lot more than in real life, and the lighting probably also contributed to making colors look more saturated than they really are. All of the Bugbear Headreaver minis I've seen are more brownish-yellow than bright yellow.

There are a few minis that have bad paint jobs, but that's normal for every set (the lack of paint on the Drow Spiderguard is pretty bad; if you didn't already dislike the new Grick because of the sculpt, the bright blue paint might just do it; the Mind Flayer Scourge has also been holding its breath far too long...)

There are also a couple of noticeable errors in the paint order that slipped through (Dwarf Warlord as a duergar, Drow Spiderguard has a flaming sword instead of a frost sword, etc...), although I'm willing to be forgiving on that point, since they probably had significantly more outside changes that disrupted the process and caused minis to be added or removed from the set as work on 4E progressed.

Overall, I don't think this paint of this set is any better or worse than other recent sets, and I think we'll gradually see some overall improvement a few sets down the road as WotC learns to take better advantage of the "texturing" effects that CAD has allowed them to add to many sculpts. There's actually a lot more sculpted detail on many of the minis than there would have been in past sets.

as i have said before the spiderguards sword is frostBURN... it probably is a fire/ice mix that just ended up showing too much flame

I was wondering, did WOTC release information about a new paint method or approach? I see two comments on this thread about it (the "paint step economy" and "texturing effects that CAD has allowed them to add". Was this info from a convension seminar, or from the Wizards' website, or somewhere else?

I would have liked the griffon if it were 50% larger. Right now even new halflings might have difficulties riding one.

Wow, I hadn't checked my spiderguard before this. Where's the paint? This reminds me of Wardrums again >:(

Immolith also needed a touch of pencil, but it was easily fixed. Spiderguard might be ok after a bit of dryburshing, maybe dark blue & silver.

And the orcs, the ugliest orcs made so far... Well, maybe we need some well-equiped orcs in well-kept armor too. Too bad they are the only ones available for DDM2 right now.

This sets is the WORST yet. Can sure tell their attentions were elsewhere (4e?) when they developed this mess.

The truely horrid include Wyvern, Vampire Spawn, Runecarved Eidolon, Orc Raider!, Lamia, Magma Brute, Griffon, Goblin Picador, Grick, Gnoll Marauder, Chillborn, Bralani.

The Orc Raider is the worst! WTH Looks like those 70's D&D toys. And why redo the Wyvern, Griffon and grick with minis that are fugly compared to originals?

The Bulette, Cleric of Pelor, Eye of Flame, Vrock, Shadow Demon, Giant Centipede, Gargoyle and Young Silver Dragon are worth owning, but not much else. The Fen Hydra sculpt is decent, but the paint is so nasty.

Vrock and Eye of Flame are the only minis I am excited about. Oh and the Yuan-Ti Swiftscale from the starter!

The upside is I will be spending almost nothing on this set.

It's definitely the set I've bought the least of. I spent $96 including shipping and including 5 Yuan-Tis from the starter and 3 Vrocks(want more please!!) and with a couple trades am pretty much done with the set.

The thing I think is really sad is that the set list is awesome for the most part. Just going by the list, I would figure 2-3 cases, but the execution is so poor, there were only 19 minis I even wanted and only 8 of them in multiples.

The year: 1994. From out of space comes a runaway planet, hurtling between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction! Man's civilization is cast in ruin!

True, the paintjob really sucks. Two colours on most of the minis and at the top the drow. I like about 10 minis for paint. There are some cool sculpts, but they are either sucky in colours, or the Griffon is so so small and badly painted.

Plus, have you noticed the Dwarf Shieldmaiden looks like a Warhammer Space Marine? :)
