yuan ti and chain golem 2 of my least favorite scupts... The old anamathea was amazing in the original artwork... This new thing is cool but not an animathea... Chain golem should have been all kinds ofcool and dynamic... Boring... Statwise the yuanti is totally playable if your opponent isn't immune to poison... Chain golem: ehh... Underwhelming but a cool mechanic.

I think I prefer the Dreamblade "chain golem" over the DDM one.  The Anathema however, love it.   The fact that it's a rare... not so nice.

I completely agree with Cthulhufnord on the Dreamblade chain golem being much better. I don't like the Anathema though.

Hooboy. What a couple of duds. Incredibly hokey sculpts, mediocre paint, and I love the used-car-salesman grin on the Yuan-ti.

This week, we inspect a couple of monsters whose looks were recreated during the D&D minis design process for the upcoming Against the Giants set.

Yuan-ti Anathema

Click to display stat card

The heroes emerge from the secret passageway into a chamber deep underneath the vine-choked yuan-ti ziggurat. The floor of the chamber writhes with snakes, though the vipers and asps seem to move away from the flames of the heroes’ torches. But then the snakes start sliding toward each other, slithering into a massive, ophidian mound. A horrid cobra head rises from the ground, appearing as if from nowhere amidst the mass of snakes, which begins rising into the monstrous form of the anathema.

The Yuan-ti Anathema was one of the Huge creatures on our initial list for inclusion in a Huge minis set. At the time, we were also in the process of building the 4th edition D&D world, and James Wyatt and the story team had been germinating the idea that anathemas were more like barely-controlled deadly forces, and even normal yuan-ti were terrified of them. The Monster Manual now describes how the anathema once ruled the yuan-ti as kings until they were stricken with madness and imprisoned. Now the yuan-ti regard them as holy creatures but fear that the anathemas would swarm, slay, and eat everything if released. While discussing the new anathema role, we also decided that the look needed to change a bit to reflect their role as a force of nature. I suggested rendering them as a “snake elemental,” a mass of snakes given vaguely humanoid proportions, with its massive cobra head a manifestation of the anathema’s malevolent spirit. We ran with it, and the Yuan-ti Anathema miniature is the result.

Chain Golem

Click to display stat card

One of the minis of the Dreamblade line, the Iron Thug, provided inspiration for this monster. The Chain Golem is a creature made entirely from -- you guessed it -- chains! The concept is pretty straightforward. The Chain Golem is a great example of us getting exactly what we wanted, based on our initial art order, which read as follows:

A Huge humanoid form completely formed of masses of twined chains. Its fists are great chain links flexed to smash puny foes stupid enough to get too close. It might be that a few hooks and spiked iron balls are woven into the mass of chains that make up its body. Though the creature is Huge, its proportions are more stout, with stumpy legs, a lump for a head marked only by glowing red eye sockets, and thick arms that end in chain-wrapped fists.

I had fun with the Chain Golem’s abilities. Its basic attack can immobilize, but it can also use Chain Bind to entrap a target (I imagine it as the Chain Golem absorbing a screaming target into its body), which removes a target from the battle map, slowly squeezing it to death unless it makes a saving throw.

The anathema rocks. And immune stunned!

Is end of round after save ends saves are rolled?

Golem has few HP, but entrap has a powerful AB and it has a big AC. And it immobilizes with the greatest AB yet.

I think both have potential.

I will want both.

Blech. I already knew I didn't want either of these and this preview does nothing to change that. Thank God for June and beyond.

The anathema isn't as cool as it ought to have been. Very cartoony. And the chain golem is very boring. Horrible waste of a huge slot.

I wonder if aboleths, remorhaz, frost worms, nalfeshnees, catoblepi, and black puddings are still huge. I would vastly have prefered any one of those to these two (and the earth titan, guulvorg, enormous carrion crawler, and blackroot treant). Once again, some really odd choices for huges.

Frankly, I don't even care is the aboleth is large or huge. It isn't really relevant to the theme of the monster.

But if it IS huge, it is another wasted opportunity. Same goes for the nalfeshnee and the remorhaz. Some of my choices may be obscure, but remorhaz, nalfeshnee, and aboleth are oft-requested huges.

I'd like to see an Aboleth be it a large or a huge.  I figure we'd be more likely to see in a huge format, hence my disapointment over the selection of huges for the set.  I'd love for Wotc to prove me wrong and include a large Aboleth in this set, although we'd need a Skum minature as well.

As was said Aboleth is now large.

Remorhaz, Frost Worms, Nalfeshnees, Catoblepi, and Black Puddings are not in the 4e MM1.  Doesn't mean they won't show up, but we don't know if they might change size yet.

The other missing huge sculpt - hydra, now comes in large, huge, and gargantuan.

Looking a little more closely at the Anathema..... I'm disapointed by the roundness of the Teeth in the big head of the critter, as well as the lack of paint in the smaller heads mouths.  A rare indeed, it looks more like an uncommon to me.

Thank you for all this information. I don't mind a large aboleth at all.

And I would certainly love a huge hydra - if only to improve upon the flat paintjob and conspicuous seams of the one from DoD2.

What makes WotC think we wanted these huges? This set may have been designed by monkeys.
I've never been more disappointed with a mini set; I was hoping AtG would redeem the embarrassment that was Dungeons of Dreadful, but I guess the nose dive continues....

I like the Chain Golem and will happily take any that the above posters do not want.

As for the Anathema... It could look much better if the snakes weren't all a flat green. I wouldn't mind if they were all the same kind of snake as long as they had some color variation to them. Unfortunately, this remains my least favorite huge mini. Here's hoping that'll change once I get it in-hand.

IMO the previews for this set are zero for 10 so far.

Don't worry about the current metagame. It doesn't matter if it's ugly, bad, or the best ever. In 2 years time, set rotation will ban everything.

I gotta agree with most of you - the Chain Golem is BOOOORR-ing! I like the new Yuan Ti Anathema (being made out of snakes is just cool, imo) but the giant s**t-eating grin nearly ruins it for me. Add to the fact it is a rare and therefore likely to be very expensive on the single market and it is a thumbs down from me. Too bad - I love the huge sets but this one ain't shaping up too good.

As usual, the RPG value is about 50-50 for me; I have hundreds and hundreds of minis that I'll never use in RPG. This is just par for the course for me.
