You know, I think that they're about 15 years ahead of themselves.  I think that what the D&D guys want the software and hardware to be able to do won't exist for a while yet, and that they're fooling themselves thinking they can pull this off.

Yes, it would be cool to have an online gaming experience that was 99% as good as an around-the-table gaming experience.

But, with network problems (not just at WotC's servers), with so many different OS/software variations out there, with all the functionality they want, it's going to be a problem.  Not everyone has a $10,000 super, ultra, mega machine with every bell and whistle.  If the Gaming Table ever launches, it's going to be slow as hell for a lot of people.  If you think sitting around waiting for your friends to count their damage is bad, just you wait.  With lagging and intensive graphics, it could take 2 or 3 minutes to move your mini.

Once upon a time, I was secretly pretty hopeful about this, but the more I think about it, the more pessimistic I'm becoming.

The minimum reqs for the gaming table are fairly steep. I'd guess for smooth running the average end-user is probably looking at a $1000+ computer upgrade and good broadband internet service (i.e. cable with decent upstream speed).

My laptop exceeds the minimum reqs but I'd bet I'd still get some serious frame rate speed issues (granted, my laptop doesn't have much of a graphics card).

The graphics don't appear to be anywhere near as advanced as say WoW or Age of Conan and I can run either of those with some frame rate drop (and no server/net lag).

If WotC properly implements the connectivity structure I imagine that the game table will actually be a decent product (which is amazing since I really dislike the D&DI in general). If they don't implement it properly (i.e. inadequate central servers or poorly designed peer-hosting) then the whole thing will tank hard.

I'd like it to be awesome, but the key is keeping the graphics down. Basically, all it needs to be is a mapper/IM, with a master user. The better the mapper, cool, but don't let it get to bogged down.

I'd rather have good content and good content management than 'good' graphics.

Sorry, the best part of D&D is getting together with your friends for a good time.

Granted, there are some who's group has split apart, or those that live out in the boonies, but I really hope this isn't the future of D&D. It seems to be turning into user manipulated WoW. Then again, I'm an old fart who had to be dragged kicking and screaming into 3E. (which turned into 3.5 because they don't know how to properly play test things)

It turned into 3.5 because Hasbro gave them a deadline they told Hasbro they couldn't possibly be ready by to print 3.0. If they had been able to playtest it as much as they thought they needed to, there would not have been two separate editions

I still don't think 3.X was playtested enough. That doesn't mean I don't like it. I don't think 4e will be playtested enough either.

love the idea... In practice I'm guessing they are not ready at all. Which is sad... Vassal works very well on very little, if they can do it wizards should be able to figure it out.

I would be all for Internet gaming if it worked even 75-85% as well as the real thing; my groups over an hour away and we're scattered up there too. It's 32 bucks in gas alone for me to play. I would also be out of sight of our one player who insists on reading through at least one splat book a session while he game is going. Give and take.

My guess is they hope sales will be high enough that they can then convince hasbro to kick some funds that way... I hope so...

The quality of most MMORGs leads me to think that it's not *that* hard, and that it won't be a lagfest. Unless it coded very poorly :|

Though I think an online experience can only be a part of the experience of sitting at table together. Of course in the plus side there is is potential of PUGs (pick up groups) where you are at a virtual tavern and someone announces 'game for 2nd-4th level in ten minutes' could be fantastic fun, albeit constrained without the Rule:0 being enforcable.

The experience of sitting at a table together is ideal, yes, but I can't do that with my group. We're spread across no fewer than four states, and possibly five. This is a godsend for us, and I can't wait for its launch.

Considering how WotC handled Master Tools/e-Tools as well as how they have handled the electronic versions of Dungeon and Dragon so far (read: poorly), I don't have a lot of faith in them to pull this off.

If they do, then good on them.  But I'll believe it when I see it.  There track record with this sort of thing is pretty bad.

Not to be TOO crass, but there are already perfectly good free applications out there (have been for some time) to play battle-mat-endowed D&D and similar. Paying for some mediocre graphics which in the end still will rely on player imagination to fill in the details doesn't seem like much of a deal.

If you're paying for Inside, it should be for content like articles and such.

I'll be paying for the whol experience.

I'm hoping it will be able to straight upload an adventure. Imagine just clicking on [insert random adventure name here] and it will have everything made already. Maps, the goblins, etc. i don't have to manually build it. I'll still control movements, tactics, and I could customize it, but it's already loaded.

I've seen the site down several times in the last few weeks.  it's pretty bad.  Don't want to be shelling out 14 muchs a month for that.

If it was 5 bucks a month, swallowing that would be better.  not 15.  If I wanted to pay 15, I'd go play WOW or something.

May you find peace and happiness at the hand of Hextor.

One thing to keep in mind with what may seem as 'steep' requirements right now is that they expect to have this software be a corner stone for them for years to come. In a year or two the requirements wont seem as steep as they do now (let along in 6mo when the software has a chance of going live).

I agree, there is plenty of free, open source programs that will do it all.
There is also many one time only commerical programs that are superb.
