| For those involved at the last 5 Community Draft events, you’ll know that we have played our events on a custom Map, Robbdaman’s, Minotaur Labyrinth at Winter Fantasy 06, Jenkii's Merchant Quarter Gate at Gen Con 06, and Robbdaman's (again!) Spider Caverns at D&D XP 07. At GenCon 07 we moved to TWO maps, with submissions by Jayne Cobb/Sulaco (Mechanus) and Robbdaman's (Dark Alleyways), and at XP 08 we used the Hordelings 07 "Temple of Unseening" Fundraiser map by Kevin Tatroe/Jeff Engle, and the "Ancient Shrines of Battle" by Rafa Polit/Chadthedragonlordofauir.
This has been such a popular feature of the Draft's that we are again holding a contest and requesting that anyone who is willing, to submit a map for consideration for the up coming Gen Con 2008 Community Draft Event Details can be found here: [http://www.hordelings.com/forums/postView.php?post_id=144378&viewPage=0#144378 Community Draft - Gen Con 2008]
This thread is your official invitation to create up to 2 maps for consideration of the community for selection as the official map of the Gen Con 08 Community Draft DDM event, to be held on Saturday, August 16th, 2008.
Rules:
• General Theme: All entries will be considered, but as we have asked at the previous 3 events we’ll have a theme that people can use as a jumping off point...
• The theme for this event is: "Crossroads". Our game is at a crossroads. The rules have changed, D&D has changed. Old players are leaving, new players are arriving. How do you interpret this Cross roads of our game?! As we think about the roads, and paths, I know that I can see a crossroad at a ford, in a mushroom cavern, in a dwarven complex, in mines, in a city, in the hills, in the forest.... Let us know in your submission how your map is reflecting the crossroads the game faces in some way...
• As we are (once again) short on time, there will be no restriction to "new" maps. Even if your map has been entered in a previous contest, or has been published elsewhere, it's welcome for consideration here.
• Maps may contain new rules, but they should be SIMPLE. A good example is the sigils of Obedience that were contained on the Minotaur Labyrinth “Sigils of Obedience: When a creature sets up on a Sigil of Obedience at the start of a skirmish, treat this creature as if it did not have any difficult, wild or always out of command abilities.”
Any new rule MUST be clearly defined and printed in an out of the way corner/wall of the map. It is so very important for our players, and judges to not have to make on the fly decision about how a new rule on your map may interact with some bizarre combination of miniatures from Unhallowed and Against the Giants!
• Maps may contain any terrain types currently released in official WotC Maps
• Maps must be limited to “Fantastic Location” WIDTH (21 squares). Length of the map should be either 30, 32 or 34 squares
• Efforts should be made for the map to be balanced, but they do not have to be “mirrored” from Side A to Side B.
• During design keep in mind that the Community Draft event is a fast paced, FUN environment. A Map which make it difficult to engage with the enemy until Round 3 isn’t going to be nearly as fun, and is far less likely to have a clear winner by the end of the match.
• Maps should have 1 or more starting location for each side, large enough for warbands to be placed.
Submitters are free to edit their work based on feedback until the submission deadline
I encourge those who have strong map idea's but no time to photoshop it to find a partner. Jai had a nice map idea, and worked with Robbdaman to have it worked on, and it was nearly chosen for an earlier event.
The Submission period will last until July 25th.
Submissions should be made to this thread.
The best format for a map is .PDF - after you finish your map, if you can convert it to a .PDF, well that would be ideal!
Next choice is .TIF then would be .JPG! Please avoid .BMP and .GIF!
As was done for the Map Contest for XP 08, we will be having a panel of judges (The panel will be composed of current players ranked in the top 20 for Standard play) vette the maps prior to community voting. Maps will be appraised by the judges for 3 criteria:
Playability Includes balance, ease of using a new rule, ability to get to engagement quickly etc. Thematic Does you map follow the Theme of the contest?! RPG Value/general looks Does it have RPG value by itself? Does it look as good as a WotC Map?!
These 3 criteria will be weighted. The best looking make which is unplayable will be highly unlikely to be selected by the judges for consideration by the Community.
The map that wins will get played in round 1 and 3, and the map that comes in 2nd will be used in round 2 and 4 (time permitting).
Voting will will be streamlined. More on this to follow.
Please spread word of this contest to any DDM site you visit, as I can no longer get to them all with my limited net time at home. (websense at work ... grrr...)
Questions? Fire away!
Got a map idea, submission? POST IT!
Thanks all!

| I'm a couple years out of date on DDM (only check by here every now and then for the RPG section) but would this be a legal map these days?

Takes the crossroads concept literally with a fairly simple no frills map.
Probably has too much difficult terrain down the center (something I've been called on before with previous maps) but I like water.
Larger .PDF version available here.

True, very true.

| Vry I have missed your maps quite a bit since your old site when down. Do you have a high resolution image of this map for download anywhere? If not can you email me concerning it? Thanks!

I will put a full .pdf up. Just waiting to see if any changes are needed/wanted for now.
Preview images above have been updated (slightly).

| Hey Folks!
I've been having terrible problems with my Home PC, and I haven't been able to take the steps I was hoping for to get the maps to the next step.
We will have a Survey up soon (new format if things work out...). We will give people the option to select which iteration of Demetri0us' map they prefer as well.
I ask ALL the Map makers to listen to any feedback in this thread: http://www.hordelings.com/forums/postView.php?post_id=153105&viewPage=1#159862 and tweak their entries if they can to address the feedback. (Vry: Your maps looks terrific, but some people are concerned about first turn fireball's (and such) into the starting area's...).
Ping me with questions!

Not surprising that there’d be some things like that since
the map was originally designed with all of the wooded areas as walls. They
were changed to forest tiles once it was pointed out to me that those exist
now. If you want some more forest to help block the starting areas, just tell me
exactly which squares to make forested.
