| | Aside from some very cartoony sculpt and paint choices, I'm actually fairly pleasantly surprised. Granted, there aren't many minis in AtG I'll want tons of. I have a feeling that will be the case with any set from now on since my collection is already sufficiently over-sized. | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. Where's my pie? | I like this set.
IMO the HUGES are better than the last set (with the exception of the two dragon gods).
And yes I agree it seems like the gallery is up early.

It was probably easier to get the gallery up than a lot of the other things we want, so they got it up to distract us.

Wow, it just isn't easy to please anyone around here. I'm sure if the gallery didn't go up for 2 weeks, then there would be a bitchfest about that.
I personally am pleased that the gallery is up. Thanks WotC.
I'm OK with most of the set, but too many cartoony pieces. I don't like the dramatic increase in colour, some of these pieces will stand out dramatically from minis from previous sets. But, I'll live.
Hate the Dragonborne & Tieflings and that isn't going to change, til they give up on 4E.
The huges are growing on me. I am a huge fan of the Fire Titan, it's the only 10/10 mini to me and probably the best in the set.
There are no 0/10 minis in this set which I'm pleased with but a bunch o crap at the bottom (Dragonborn, Tieflings, Carrion Crawler)
Overall feeling on the set right now is a 6.7 average, which puts it 7th overall amongst the other sets. This may change when I have them in hand.

| I don't think I'm the target consumer for WotC anymore. I'm sticking with 3.5 D&D and don't play DDM yet. (I'd like to, but haven't been able to find a game to join and learn.) That being said, only 10 of the rares appeal to me and only one of the huge uncommons strikes my fancy. The rest don't really have a place at my 3.5 D&D table. I used to be a whole set collector, but this set is the perfect opportunity to curb my habit. My lack of fervor for this set is good news considering that I am trying to reduce my consumerism in general and specifically WotC products. However, I do want almost all the other commons and uncommons in the set. Perhaps I'll buy some boosters after all and trade away the rares I don't want for the uncommons and commons I do. Man, I wish Reaper's prepainted looked this good or my skill with a brush would allow me to complete a mini in a reasonable time - then I might be able to resist WotC miniatures. | | Have/Want List http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=11890568 | |

| As an avid collector, RPGer, and minis gamer, I've got mixed emotions about this set: As a disclaimer, I do see that with the advent of 4.0 (and its relative lack of monsters), WotC is limited in the figures they can produce at the moment, but I'm a little put off by the fact that there are so many remakes or near-remakes. Since WotC has (somewhat) phased out 1.0 minis, I really don't buy the "it's for the gamers who are new to the game" excuse. While it's a nice gesture, almost all minis are completely accessible for the right price - and I'm not griping that I don't have a first edition Dungeons and Dragons boxed set!
For instance:
Boneclaw Impaler (remake w/ template) Blazing Skeleton (already have a skeleton on fire) Bugbear Lancebreaker (...though it's good to have variety with mon. hum. races) Cave Bear (we already have big bears, small bears, owlbears [j/k], bears with axes...) Elf Arcane Archer (I love it, however) Enormous Carrion Crawler (seriously???) Elder Red Dragon (already been there with the huge red, though it has ended up one of the most difficult pieces to find) Elder White Dragon (looks very similar to the garg. white, and we already have a few large whites) Fire Giant Raider (different pose from GoL; add helmet) Furious Owlbear (no, No, NO!!!) Goblin Runner (though a D&D staple, how many of these do we need?) Hobgoblin Guard (it's the Hobgoblin Sergeant w/o fake-n-bake orangeglo tan) Lizardfolk Raider (they need some variety, these guys all look the same) Lurking Wraith (ooooh, he's lurking now) Ochre Jelly (why more ochre? Has someone in the office been watching too much HGTV while designing minis?) Orc Zombie (staple monster w/ a twist) Plaguechanged Ghoul (staple monster w/ a twist) Shadow Hulk (hmmm, not quite sure) Storm Giant Thunderer (mini-remake showing us the new face of giants) Voracious Ice Devil (did someone not feed the Ice Devil between blood war and now?) Xorn Ravager (took some tips from the ogre; no blood and axe, though)
Now that my snarky ranting about remakes is over, I do have to say that the stats for this set are very impressive. I can't even entertain anyone's thoughts of powercreep, since 2.0 hasn't really leveled out yet, but there's nothing worse than a new set that only has three or four competative pieces in it, and this set is definitely not that!
The huges are about par for the course in that most of the rares look excellent and most of the uncommons are severe wastes of plastic. My group has never really played Epic too much, so it doesn't really bug me either way (barring the set collection aspect).
Visually, the paint jobs aren't getting any worse, which I was afraid of for a while. Some of the huges have some pretty good detail - from what I can see, anyway. The final paints that we see are, unfortunately, often not like what we see on the website.
All in all, the set is visually and statistically appealing, though some of the piece choices are somewhat undesireable to me. I'm still buying at a consistant rate and can't wait for the pre-release tourny.

| I hope WotC is listening to the opinions being expressed here, which I believe they are at times. My concern is some of the 4th edition art work and mini designs are starting to seem a bit cartoonish. If this trend continues I will quit buying the new products, and especially the mini's. This set looks decent and I did buy two cases even though I wasn't sure what to expect. I just want to warn the designers that the cover art on the new products is pushing into that cartoon look and I see some miniatures that appear to do the same. That huge red dragon looks terrible and I can only hope that once it is in hand it will be much better, as often seems to be the case. I love the look of the huge white though, well done! One last thing I notice in the pics of the minis is the lack of an ink wash, why? The painting of the minis just looks flat and poor without the proper shading. I thought the blistered starters pack with the green dragon looked great and in large part not only because the sculpts were nice but they looked to be ink washed. No ink wash often makes the paint job look caroon-like once again.
Just some suggestions from those of us that dread our precious D&D being turned into cartoons or anime! Next thing that will happen is someone will try making Dragonlance into a cartoon movie and butcher it to death - oh wait that already happened :-( | | Here is my have want list: http://www.maxminis.com/hw_list.asp?user=tirwin Successful Trades: Irav222 (x2), Darkfather, Kaya Kenobi, conanb1, dudeeehm, Uk, Master Elminster, tmertz, Shasack, Drewskie, et39100 (x2), Gaddszooks (x4), Romers, Weinbergphp, Vaasic, Navaire, lurch_E_bean, dobblegog, cjmax, jthm, Meds x2, hellfire2, w33zrfan, unmaker, sthig, Eldarion, drowdude, DM Lackey, griffat, eryador, tsech (not sure if this is his screen name?), Jordan, entropysoda, MikeWis, HalifaxDM, Targan, Drakul, wraith428, dmindock, mythoscreature, Tenlado,Chaotic Good, Asteroidjawa, Puggins, Bdog, slapdragon, Drakkengi,WarRabbit(2), Mnpatsfan, Greymouse, Snapdragon, Isondaho, Halofurry, Krush, Ekomega, Amator, Minatoman38, + many new trades recorded by maxminis, and never had a bad trade so please help keep the streak alive, thanks! | The Hellwasp almost beats out the Hierophant of the Seven Winds for a spot on my bottom 5 minis...only the fact that a rebase and repaint could save it somewhat keeps it from joining it there.
Surprisingly, it's less the horrible paint (which is bad imho) and more the fact that they chose to put the - obviously not flying - wasp on a clear plastic support, giving it the impression of flight. I mean, c'mon! the wings are folded back and the feet are all sitting flat. It seriously needs a rebase.
Overall though, there are some nice things about this set imho. A number of the PC/NPC minis are unusual enough that I don't mind getting them. There are some nice sculpts and several that I want. My biggest problem now is affording them...many of these seem to be fetching really high pre-sale prices on eBay.

It seems to be a trend...there's always a couple mini pictures in the galleries that make me wonder if they really do have a professional photographer on staff or if they just turned the intern loose with a digital camera and promised him/her a raise.
The Elder Red Dragon is a great example. If they had just turned the mini a litte bit more sideways it would look a whole lot better.

| Hm. OK, here are my first thoughts, commenting on all of the Rares and Huges (I play RPG and not the Minis game): Angel of Retribution: I really dislike the new "jelly worm" look of the angels in 4E. No exception to that here. Boneclaw Impaler: This guy isn't too bad. I already have a Boneclaw that I've never used though. Armored Guulvorg: I don't care for the Guulvorg so my opinion may be biased. I'm not fond of this sculpt. If nothing else the armor forces me to further alter the only stand-in choice I could make for this guy in my Eberron campaign -- he'd have to be an ARMORED advanced horrid wolf.
Blackroot Treant: A Nightwalker wearing a Tiki mask. Nuff said.
Chain Golem: I actually like this guy. Wouldn't mind pulling two of him. The level of detail doesn't look bad and I could use this as a monster in my game.
Cockatrice: Only an Uncommon, but worth mentioning. I like this piece. Decent sculpt, decent pose, and we needed a cockatrice.
Cloaktrick Rogue: I'm worried about the lack of facial detail on this one. Might be good as an Uncommon, rather disappointing as a Rare.
Doresain, the Ghoul King: The name is more impressive than the mini IMO. Too much white. Would it have broken the bank to have put shading in the skull's eye sockets?
Death Titan: Decent pose. I wouldn't mind pulling this guy. The axe haft should have been thicker though. And what's with the air or water swirling around him?
Dragonborn Defender & Dragonborn Myrmidon: OK, these guys tick me off. They're actually decent sculpts and it's clear they were earmarked for extra detail. The poses and paint jobs (other than the Defender's curiously white sword) are good. The problem is that I hate the Dragonborn. I think WotC wants to create more Dragonborn love and these sculpts were an attempt to do that, but all I can think when I see them is how the level of detail on these was taken away from other sculpts that I'd actually WANT. I hate them and I can't help but feel doomed to pull both of them when my case comes in. Die Dragonborn Die!!!
Earth Titan: Yeah, I can use a Huge Earth Elemental.
Efreeti Flamestrider: I'll want to repaint this guy to make him a darker red. Otherwise he looks like he has potential.
Enourmous Carrior Crawler: My current campaign is in Eberron and the main villains are aberrations led by the Daelkyr. I'll actually be using this guy -- I even hope I pull more than one -- but I recognize that my personal situaiton isn't typical and may be coloring my opinion of the mini. Still, even outside of my situation, this guy is one of the better looking minis in the set IMO. As with many of this set's minis, there is room for more sculpt detail, but its pose is dynamic enough. He could be an evil psionic mastermind -- THE BOOKWORM!
Elder Red Dragon: He looks like he was put together by a 5-year-old with a lump of red clay and a pile of crudely detailed plastic parts. Seriously. Color me unimpressed.
Elder White Dragon: In contrast the the Red, this guy has a decent dynamic pose and hints at decent sculpt detail. In addition I've been waiting for a Huge White for some time now. Nice. This guy is one of my "top three" rares for the set.
Fire Giant Raider: I like the fire giant minis overall (past and present) for their dynamic poses and interesting sculpt details. This guy looks to be no exception. I like him and hope to pull him.
Fire Titan: See Fire Giant Raider, above, although I'm no fan of the orange Jell-O and this guys detail level seems lower to me.
Furious Owlbear: More like "Puffball Owlbear" or just "Fat Owlbear". Maybe it's just the angle of the shot but this guy looks too roly-poly to take as seriously as the previous two Owlbear sculpts. Just move back and fire arrows as he tries to waddle up to you.
Galeb Duhr: Only a Common but worth mentioning as it is clearly the "WTF" piece of the set.
Mighty Blademaster: Meh. Disappointing rare that I'll probably pull two of.
Roper: This guy is actually a lot better than the Roper from Underdark (not that that is a great accomplishment, but still). Even aside from that comparision he looks like a good piece to me, one of the best in the set actually. Again, nice dynamic pose for an enemy and good level of detail. Hope I pull one.
Shadow Hulk: High-Tech Hulk. This guy looks like a robot or psionic construct to me. Which isn't all bad. Not my favorite piece but I wouldn't mind pulling one.
Shifter Claw Adept: A claw fighter without claws? Meh and double meh. Another piece I'll pull two of and curse. Could have been much better if they'd taken a look at the Gnoll Clawfighter before designing it (that guy I like).
Skullcleave Warrior: Another fighter with an axe. Meh.
Storm Giant Thunderer: A passably good giant. I like the maul. I'm worried that the paint job looks extremely basic/undetailed.
Thunderblast Cyclone: Yeah, I can use a Huge Air Elemental.
Tiefling Gladiator & Tomebound Arcanist: I want to call these yawners, but I have to admit I do like their poses. Don't want either one eating up my precious rare slots though (so of course I'll end up pulling both).
Voracious Ice Devil: I know we already had an Ice Devil recently (and I have him), but still I like this guy. If I pull him I'll just have to design an encounter for my campaign featuring two Ice Devils. Curious why they didn't go with clear blue "ice" for the spearhead though -- it would have worked.
Young Adamantine Dragon: A decent dragon that I'd be happy to pull. Repaint him and it looks like you'd have a classic Green dragon.
Yuan-Ti Anathema: When I first heard this mini was going to be in the set, I was very excited -- until I actually saw the preview image. My dislike for this sculpt probably stems less from the fact that it's a poor sculpt than from the fact that they deviated too much from the fantastic look that the YTA had in its original artwork (in the MM3, I think). That was a very cool looking monster, while this guy looks too much like a "snaked up" Animal from the Muppet Show to me. The snake fingers are a nice touch but not enough to compensate for losing the cool look of the original.
That's it!

| Well the red does look a little better from the side.
This is the flagship monster for D&D though. It should knock your socks off, and this one just doesn't do it for me.
A wash on this one would have done wonders.

But that's a good thing! Absolutly. I'm not upset the gallery is up in the leat. Just suprised.

| I had my wife look through the gallery for fun, she is non-dnder, and her two comments were: "there are lots of monsters that don't look like they belong to dnd" "most look like they have very few colors" It was an interesting 2nd opinion for me. | | Champion of Minsc & Boo

| The Huge Red makes the Elder Red look like a child sculpted and painted it.
There are a lot of poor art design choices here; I didn't want action figures in my boosters. | | Life's a bowl of cultists.... _______________________________ Champion of the Scale-Creep Resistance ________________________ Champion of the Black Pudding

| No Case or Boosters for me this time. AtG has only very few good looking miniatures. The paintjobs get worse with every set! Best example ist Huge --> Elder Red Dragon. I am very dissapointed!
WotC please listen to the community and do a better job on the next set!!!

| Tomorrow is the day of the previews, I can't wait:-)
I also hope all the bad-painted figs will look much better in real. | | 2007 & 2008 Czech Republic Champion 2008 Czech Republic's Player of the Year

| | This set has tons of incredibly cool miniatures like the pyromancer, arcane archer and the captain (at least in my opinion since I simply love PCs) so it is not so bad.About the paintjob...well,it is a huge set so we can espect a better job than in previous sets (wich have been certainly horrible).Or at least I hope so.The huges choices have been bad done, that is true. And the new huge red is simply ridiculously bad desingned in all angles and positions. For me, a very good set....except the huge red wich is the worst thing | | LOVE THIS GIRL | |

| I'm starting to wonder if they take these pictures of figures before the final details are applied. For example, the Galeb Duhr in the gallery looks like it has no detail paint (like the Medium Earth Elemental(, but the actual one I has whatever the factory version of an ink wash and dry bushing (like the Elemental Wall).
On a side topic, I really like the Chain Golem repaint. It looks rusty and dirty. To me it is more intimidating than the fresh from Home Depot look of the regular. | | Do you like games John? Absolutely!

| Thanks for the pics, username.
I'm happy the Elder Red looks slightly better than the initial gallery photo, but compared to the Huge Red the new guy doesn't look like a mini for the same game. I completely agree with Paladin72 - the Huge Red should be a mini that makes you say "AWESOME!" when just thinking about it.
As I mentioned earlier, the pose is more fitting for a good aligned dragon. The shiny paint gives a toy- like look, and why they didn't even paint the claws (nails - see Huge Red) is beyond me.
I just started DDM with Underdark and was really looking forward to finally get a huge red dragon for my campaign:
DM: "You finally enter the main chamber of the underground complex. The humid air rests heavy on your armor while the smoke clouds your vision and you feel the stinging heat in your eyes. Suddenly ... some movement. Out of the corner of your eyes you realize some movement. A massive, horned head lifts itself from the stalagmite- filled bottom of the chamber. A huge red dragon! It's scales and scares witness countless battles, the intimidating glow in its eyes is frightening and a reflection of the intelligence of this ancient being. [...]"
(takes Elder Red Dragon out of box and sets on table)
Players: (looking at each other for seconds.... before bursting into laughter) "Did you steal that from your son?"
Seriously, I don't mind using (whatever) as proxis, but if you have heaps of minis to represent the monsters in every encounter, you'd like to see everything in accordance with the rest of the game.
So far, that's not the case with Dungeons of Dread and Against the Giants, unfortunately. Far too cartoonish! | | Champion of Regis

| The Red does need a few touch ups and an ink wash.

| I thought the production model of the Carrion Crawler looked reasonable, painted it's just...gah (maybe it's the photo angle). I can see the Hellwasp and a few others as repaint candidates (already pondering modding the Adept using limbs/hands from a Gnoll Claw Fighter).
The Furious Owlbear is just stupid-looking. Treant is OK (already seeing repaint potential).
