I am about to start a 4e campaign and am about to start buying up for the upcoming game sessions.

I am complete and total newbie when it comes to mini's so I thought I would come to the experts and bombard you with my stupid questions.

Stupid Question One
Is there any one best place to buy mini's? Or is it just a mixture of Auggies, Ebay, Miniatures Markets, trades etc? I live in Australia - does this make one place better than the others?

Stupid Question Two
Are there any other companies that release prepainted minis that are on the same scale as the D&D prepainted minis that would be usable for the game? Pro's and con's of these brands?

Stupid Question Three
Has there been any size changes in the DDM mini's or can I get some from any set and not have to worry about size issues?

Stupid Question Four
When I look on the WotC website they have a "Master List" but it only includes a few of the sets - what is the reason for this? Am I able to buy single minis from the older sets from stores - what is the availability like

Stupid Question Five
For the first adventure I have the following encounters, can you suggest suitable miniatures for these?

For those that I have already found a good fit (in my opinion) I will write that mini next to it, if you have different options that would be much appreciated. Only prepainted mini suggestions please. Also if you think that a particular suggestion will be very hard to track down can you please also indicate that.

Goblin Minions x12 (generic style goblin) Goblin Runner
Goblin Blackblade x2 (sneaky, assassin type goblin) Goblin Warrior
Goblin Sharpshooter x2 (any archery type goblin)
Goblin Hexer x1 (Spellcaster, Witchdoctor goblin)
Goblin Skullcleaver x1 (berserker, warrior goblin)
Kobold Minion x 6 Flamescorched Kobold
Kobold Skirmisher x1 (sneaky kobold)
Kobold Wild Mage x1 (spellcaster kobold)
Kobold Slinger x1 (archery kobold)
Vine Horror (humanoid vine/plant monster - a man made of vines basically)
Stirges x3
Ochre Jelly x2 (any ooze here will do fine - a Large and Medium would be fantastic)
Dire Boar x1
Skeleton x12
Zombie x12
Undead Shaman x1

I have cross-posted this in the 4e forum as well as I was not too sure where the best place for it was.

If anyone has any advice on what they did when they started a campaign and bought some mini's that would be great to hear.

Thankyou in advance for your assistance.

Not sure if Auggies ships to AU, might want to check that out. If you are a fan of the 4.0 art, then Desert of Desolation, Dungeons of Dread and Against the Giants, and the 2008 Starter are the set that use the 4.0 art.

As far as other companies, Reaper Miniatures makes PPPM (prepainted plastic miniatures) in their Legendary Encounters line. It's just taking off, so their selection isn't huge. Also, Rackham as some PPPM that look great but are a bit expensive. Again, their line is also just taking off, so there are only a few factions to choose from.

As far as you list goes, here are my recommendations:
Goblin Minions x12 (generic style goblin) Goblin Runner/Goblin Picador
Goblin Blackblade x2 (sneaky, assassin type goblin) Goblin Blackblade
Goblin Sharpshooter x2 (any archery type goblin) Greypeak Goblin Archer
Goblin Hexer x1 (Spellcaster, Witchdoctor goblin) Goblin Adpet/Blue
Goblin Skullcleaver x1 (berserker, warrior goblin) Snig the Axe
Kobold Minion x 6 Flamescorched Kobold/Kobold Soldier/Kobold Monk
Kobold Skirmisher x1 (sneaky kobold) Kobold Trapmaker/Flamescorched Kobold/Kobold Soldier/Kobold Monk
Kobold Wild Mage x1 (spellcaster kobold) Kobold Sorceror
Kobold Slinger x1 (archery kobold) Kobold Archer
Vine Horror (humanoid vine/plant monster - a man made of vines basically) (large) Stormrage Shambler
Stirges x3 Stirge
Ochre Jelly x2 (any ooze here will do fine - a Large and Medium would be fantastic) Ochre Jelly
Dire Boar x1 Thundertusk Boar
Skeleton x12 Skeletal Legionaire/Boneshard Skeleton
Zombie x12 Greavtouched Ghoul/Strahd Zombie/Orc Zombie/Chilborn
Undead Shaman x1 Doresain the Ghoul King/Deathpriest of Orcus/Snaketongue Cultist

Stirges will not be easy to find, and will be rather expensive for uncommons. Might I suggest proxying them with gnaw demons.

if the vine horror should be medium you could use the wizened elder watcher from WotDQ, it's a cheap rare.

Blame it on the market...

$4 a piece still isn't that bad...... cheaper than Auggies I think.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

About a buck cheaper.  I aim to please with low, low prices (the reason I think I just sold out of 99% of my Uc/C).

Sydney, Australia

Hi and welcome to maxminis, mate!

1. I always order at AHubb (eBay). Very reliable, though shipping takes between 1 and 6 weeks to Australia (which is probably due to customs).
As far as I know Auggie still doesn't ship to Oz.

2. Sorry, I don't know. When I just started and lacked orcs and goblins, I just used my "Hero Quest" minis.

3. There is a slight? size creep in DDM. Some dwarves just don't mix very well for example (Guard of Mithril Hall). But it's all minor. No need to worry.

4. No idea about the "Master List", sorry. Minis from older sets are heaps expensive though (old Huge Red vs. new Huge Red = 80 vs. 30 bucks; old Fire Giant vs. new Fire Giant 30 vs. 12 bucks etc...)
Do you live in Sydney? If so, there is are two stores (at least) selling singles to prices just slightly higher than on ebay.
