Hi Everyone,

I have been tracking Ebay auctions for quite a while now.  For the fun of it, I created an Ebay auctions Hall of Fame.  I thought I might share it with you.  I have tracked enough Against the Giants auctions to have a decent sampling of this set too.  So here are the Ebay top 20 DDMs.  Ranking is by means and not averages.  With Ebay you can luck out and get a bargain in auctions and then there are the bid wars that throw the closing auction price well over the norm.  The mean eliminates the wild lows or highs and looks for the very middle auction price.  So here goes:

  1. – Drizzt – Archfiends - $58.50
  2. – Huge Gold Dragon – Giants of Legend - $36.07
  3. – Huge Red Dragon – Giants of Legend - $35.00
  4. – Drow Cleric of Lolth – Harbinger - $34.45
  5. – Large Silver Dragon – Archfiends - $32.79
  6. – Umber Hulk – Harbinger - $31.07
  7. – Beholder – Deathknell - $30.05
  8. – Aspect of Tiamat – War of the Dragon Queen - $30.00
  9. – Displacer Beast – Harbinger - $29.52
  10. – Champion of Eilistraee – Archfiends - $28.47
  11. – Mindflayer – Harbinger - $27.77
  12. – Elder Red Dragon – Against the Giants - $27.26
  13. – Troll – Harbinger - $25.94
  14. – Elder White Dragon – Against the Giants - $25.49
  15. – Large Red Dragon – Dragoneye – S24.25
  16. – Wraith – Harbinger - $24.00
  17. – Aspect of Lloth –Archfiends -$23.99
  18. – Large Black Dragon – Night Below $23.25
  19. – Eye of Flame – Dungeons of Dread $23.01
  20. – Orc Champion – Archfiends $23.00

I have noticed that recent auctions are tracking below the mean nearly across the board with the exception of the newest set.  I have seen some steals on some of the old Harbingers of late.  The effects of the overall economy appear to be the culprit.  The Troll and Wraith may eventually drop out of this list.  I could see the Horned Devil and Pit Fiend from Blood War eventually enter the list.

So this is my tracking. YMMV

Wow, some significant drops there. Ouch.

I don't expect the Orc Champion to stay for long as its All Star stats aren't compelling.

Means and averages are definitely taking a plunge.  I agree, the Orc Champion will likely drop off after just a few more auctions tracked.  I have the Harb Ogre at 21.  I believe it will keep dropping too. The Horned Devil and Pit Fiend should overtake both.

The Troll surprises me because I've seen some of them go really reasonably lately.

I've been trying to get an Aspect of Lolth for a while since I acquired her epic card, and haven't seen but one go below $25.00 in a few weeks.

The same for the Large Red Dragon I've been wanting to acquire a couple more, and not seen but one go for less than $30. If I could find some for $24 I'll take two.

Hi paladin72,

There is nothing scientific in this list.  From Harbinger to Deathknell the tracking is over many years.  This is more of an all time Top 20 moreso than a current Top 20.  The Troll has been dropping in price and will likely drop off the list over time; but just a couple of years ago the Harbinger Troll was very pricey.  By contrast, the Behir was relatively cheap with closing auctions under $15.  It is very difficult to find a Behir for under $30 today.

The Large Red took a climb about a year and half ago.  For a long time it sold for under $20.    I have seen only one under $30 in the last sixteen auctions I have tracked.  Drzzt was selling for over $70 for a long time, and then has been dropping steadily since the Icingdeath Icon Drzzt.  I disagree with the idea that resculpts do not hurt pricing.  My tracking indicates they do.

Just to clarify, are you using arithmetic mean or median?

I'm surprised that Blood War doesn't have any figure on the list yet.  I wonder if that is because there are so many other good figures in the set.  I have a theory that median pricing of single for readily available sets is more or less inelastic.  If singles prices for a set start to get too high, buyers will have more incentive to buy boosters and sell off unwanted figures.  If singles prices start to dip too low, sellers will stop restocking a set.  For a specific figure to reach really high prices there needs to be some stinkers that have really low prices.

When a boosters for a set are less available singles' prices shouldn't be as tied to the set.  Maybe when Blood War boosters become hard to find the singles prices will shoot up.

Do you like games John?
Absolutely!

Hi portermj,

You are so right!  It is the median or middle price, instead of the average or mean price that I based this list on.

Two figures from Blood War are numbers 22 (Horned Devil) and 23 (Pit Fiend)  in my tracking.  As some of the older Harbingers and Archfiends lose their values, these Blood War minis will overtake them.  As long as you can buy Blood War boosters, these figures should remain more constant in pricing; that is unless WotC makes more versions of the Horned Devil and Pit Fiend like they did with the Ice Devil.

Hi Mazra,

I really like the way you say hi to everyone.

I see what you are saying now. I didn't realize it was over the years. It's a good list though. I really wish I had bought more of the Large Reds when they were $20, but at the time I only wanted one.

I do agree the resculpts do hurt value, but it doesn't bother me much. Everyone should be able to have a Drizzt if they want one.

The Mind Flayer, and the Wraith have still eluded me. Hopefully they will go down to the price I'm willing to pay soon. I prefer them to the resculpts.

Hi again paladin72,

I agree with you.  Resculpts really do not bother me either.  As long as WotC does resculpts and does not reissue older sculpts it is as you say, a chance for those entering the hobby to get a Drzzt or a Huge Red Dragon.   Sometimes I like getting a different looking figurine of a type.  Having several unique Trolls on the game map as flavor.

The Harb Mind Flayer is a great sculpt with a poor paint job.  I have one and would like a second to repaint it.   I also prefer the Harb Wraith.  It is very LotRs.

I agree, I bought the two I have at ~ $15.

However, the best deal I got was finding the chainmail version in a discontinued bin for $3.99. Steal!

Hi Teflon Jeff,

If you bought two Orc Champions for $15, you are still ahead of the game and you have one more than the $16 one I have.  Just over a year ago I saw one sell for over $50, but I seen several for under $20 within the last several months; but none sold below $15.  Collectibles tend to take a hit in a poor economy.  Now may be a good time to complete some early sets or get some duplicates.

I too would like to see your chainmail version.  (Pics Please!)
