| Recently while going through a large package of recently acquired AtG, my wife asked me, "Why are yoiu getting so many of the same figure," to which I replied, "Because I like them." That little exchange got me to thinking - with several minis of the same type out, why do I have so much of one given mini. Why do I have X amount of X generic guard/soldier type? After going over my collection, I figured I could cut down the number of individual minis and yet still have a sizeable force.
For example, I thought about the ogres I owned:
1 Ogre 1 Ogre Ravager 1 Ogre Mage 4 Half-Ogre Barbarian 1 Half-Fiend Ogre 1 Ogre Warhulk 4 Ogre Skirmisher 1 Ogre Executioner 1 Ogre Brute 1 Oni (in the future) 4 Ogre Pulverizer 1 Brutal Ogre Warhulk Plus any other future Ogre (slight multiples for Uc)
Total, that's 21 ogres. Why on earth would I want more than that? When (and why) would any RPG encounter consist of over 20 ogres at one time?
Again, I used to own a dozen, then ten, then 8 of each generic human guard/soldier type. I looked at them and said thought, "Why?" So now I've count down to 4 each, which still adds up to about 40 soldiers.
As for rares, I only have 1 of each (not counting mounted minis) because of Uc counterparts, proxies and most likely resculpts.
So, I guess my question/point is, how do you rationalize the size of your collection? | | Originally posted by Schooly_D Username - he deals in minis Champion of Lhesh Haruuc Shaarat'kor

| I've restricted most of my collection to 12, 8, 4, 2, 1, 0, only a few get the 24 figure treatment (Goblin Archer for instance). It all hinges greatly on whether or not I think I'll be able to get more of the said figure in an upcoming set, and how many I would use.
Even though some figures like the Merchant Guard, can be swapped out for other figures, I do like certain forces to match. So I would prefer to use the numbered stickers to divide them, instead of completely different figures.
However, as each set comes out, there are many figures that I will be looking at swapping out... like the large black/blue dragons. I have 4 of each, but don't need 6 or 8 large black dragons... to my knowledge... so, I may be getting rid of 2 of my older ones to make room for 2 of the newer ones. Maybe. I mean, I am addicted afterall. | | Greyhaze's DDM Spoilers Champion of a Medium Dog & then a Darkenbeast , Raistlin Majere, Nightmare WDQ25/60, Warduke WD60/60, Anti-Champion of Guns, "Knight of Bugbears", and Joke Champion of Venger. I can understand why you would want X amount of a specialty mini, but I can't justify the need for it. I used to have 30 Graypeak Goblin Archers. Why?! Now, I've whittled it down to 4. Add my 4 Goblin Sneaks to that, and that's 8 ranged gobos, not counting the 4 skirmishers, picadors and runners.

| | Yeh, but they're not ARCHERS. I guess that's the key for me. Specifics. Now, the picador/runners are extremely close in use. While the adept to me looks like a tribal shaman, and I never picked up many of him as a result, cause to me - it's - "how many goblin shamans do i need?" The goblin sneak however, has a crossbow, and is specific to that. Not sure I follow. I'll still only have 4 large blue/black dragons, 2 will be new and 2 will be old... it'd be half of what they would sell to me than if they put something new out. So, I guess my question/point is, how do you rationalize the size of your collection? I get hit in the head with sticks for a hobby.
I went through your ogre list and was pretty close to it, plus about a dozen more. So like 30+ ogres, how can you really justify needing that? I have 8 Formorian Giants, where would I ever use that?
I think my main motivation is driven a bit by general happiness, resources and a bit of fear.
I always wanted to run miniature battles as a kid (ie Warhammer, 40,000), but the lack of patience and talent kept me from painting cause I'm a perfectionist and I just suck at painting. So my collection never amounted to much.
Then these came along (plus SWM and AAM) and since I got a fair amount of disposable cash and an understanding wife so the collection has gone nuts... 6000+ DDM, 1500+SMW (AAM will come along at some point I'm sure)
The fear is that the lines will come to an end, so I need to collect as much stuff to fill in every possible situation in the future.
On the plus side, is that I have been replacing some older minis with new ones if I like them better. So good bye ugly ghouls, ghasts, wights, zombies...

It's not bad, but when it comes to storage space and money, rethinking my collection was a good thing.

Once I broke through my mental barrier of wanting tons of anything I did want, I found I could get rid of tons of stuff. I ended up trimming about 3-4k from my collection which is now sitting comfortably at around 1k-1,200. | | Eye dun no why youse guys think im not relly a person im jimgang from canada but im moving to cali as soon as i get a master card -Jimgang So, you stand at your grave, Has your soul yet been taken away? Ahhhdiction... haven't got the foggiest of what you're talking about...
And I think I'm in the same boat as berus316, although I don't label it as "fear", but rather as "possibilities". It's possible, I could have an encounter with 4 fomorians, not likely, but hey, it could happen - I could also just make it happen... however, I also split my collection between two locations long ago, and as a result I essentially was short on stuff in one or the other location.
In regards to the "mentality" issue, yeh, I don't think I'll every get over that, bow users are bow users, not ranged units, so if some guy's got a crossbow, that's what he's got - I use the closest models first, then proxies. I'm probably close to 7,000 figures, but my storage isn't half full... I could show a pic, but it's disturbing. I also keep my SWMs and HeroClix in there too. That shelf nearly claimed 3 lives during my last move... | I've never really thought about getting rid of things completely. I'm a collector at heart. I collect things. If I don't have one of everything, I feel incomplete.
I never really get more of something than I think I'll actually use, beyond getting one of everything. Sure, I've got a lot of things, and tons of commons and uncommons I could do without, but it's just too much effort to find out what I don't need and then try to sell or trade them off. | | Completed trades: Brenigin, desiderata, HockeyFan, MikeyChraal, Raland, GuJiaXian

| Posted By thekidxii on 07/30/2008 9:42 AM i think he meant the addiction part. no? Exactly. They know most people who already have a LBD will get at least one just to have something different.
If a newer player wants a dragon they will try to get the one just released instead of going to the secondary market and purchasing the older LBD.
The bad choices (IMO) of the last few months have eased my addiction to boosters though. I'm not happy at all with the new artwork. I am happy to see the new Ogre though. Maybe there is some hope.
I'm happy with most of the dragons I have though. I have no need for newer ones. Unless of course they come out with a new Large Gold, which I will have to take a look at.
The good thing is I'm just about out of space anyway. My collection is not growing nearly as fast as it was about a year and a half ago. It is also giving me a chance to fill in the holes in my older sets.

| My collection isn't nearly as OCD as others (looking at you, Greyhaze... ) but I still have far more minis than I need/use.
Due mostly to budget (have to buy a car and plan to live in China for 9 months...these things add up) I'm only snagging singles of minis I don't have and need for RPG (picked up both AtG Dragonborn because my D&D game has two dragonborn characters), and specific minis to fill encounters for adventures I want to run (Please, let there be an uncommon Arbalester and c/u Spiretop Drake in Demonweb ).
My AtG list is rather short. My Demonweb list so far is even shorter.
I've almost completely given up getting new PC-type humanoids. Already have way too many Human sword & board, Dwarf with hammer/axe and board, Elf with bow, etc.
Things that I'll make exceptions for are c/u which can be repainted and proxied (I picked up 16 ochre jellies and I'm leaning towards another 16), really awesome sculpts (Emerald Orb Wizard), and critters I'd like to have alternate sculpts for (Fire Giant Raider).

| I like collecting so I'm always trying to get at least one of everything, even if its not one I particularly like. Generally I only look to collect 1/rare, 2/uncommon, & 4/common per set & limit myself to no more than 5 of any particular mini. For me this is finding the middle ground between getting enough and having some similarity for needed groups, but not being overwhelmed by the sheer number of minis & allowing me to continue collecting into the future. | | Champion of Minsc & Boo

| I seriously need to cut-back on ogres indeed. I think I have like 30-40 now, and counting. I guess it's a "just in case" scenario. That huge battle someday in the future? I think I got over 100 soldier minis (12 axe soldiers, 12 royal guards, etc.), but never use them. What do I need 4 Ice devils for? Just in case, I might one day need them.
But I am swapping as well. I only want 2 large blue dragons for rpg for instance, and the new one looks so much better. So, I want one of each.
Sometimes skirmish makes me to need multiples of some rares though. | | Member of the Bearded Devils Champion of the Huge Spider (WotDQ 46/60), A New Umber Hulk (DoDe 57/60), and the Orog Fighter!

| It wasnt a marketing plan to reprint older minis... It was done cause WOTC f'ed up... Well they didnt realize that many people would freak if they didnt restat the older minis. So they already did these next 2 sets with reprints to get the monsters back in for RPG's and the so called newbees ta have a chance at getting these reprints...
I think its dumb even though i dont have a huge collection. I dont even have one LBD or LBD yet. But still i dont like the reprints.

| | There are too many cases where people claim a figure is a reprint, that are not, example; Mighty Blademaster and Kalashtar Bodyguard - is not a reprint. They're just similar. So 3-5 reprints max would be fine, but there will still be plenty of "similar" figures that come out in each set. To each his own. I don't think WotC messed up at all. With a new edition coming out, it just made sense to have some basic RPG staples available in the newest sets. Do you have proof that WotC messed up, or is it just ramblings from another message board?

| Also, as far as the resculpt dragons go, that's ok with me. The Large Blue Dragon is from set #6 and will be resculpted in set #17 (3 sets a year and that is over 3 years). It's about time to have another large size blue dragon. The Large Black Dragon is from set 12# and will be resculpted in set 17# which is a bit close, but over a year apart.

| I generally get 8 of each common. this is nice, because I have two cases worth, and I can use them as chess pawns when I play.
I try to get one of each rare, and UC get the all or 1 treatment. either I get as many a spossible, or only 1, if it's teh suxx0rz.
I have no justification for my collection size, other than like having a lot of minis.

| My collection is still really small and I'm fairly green, but I've certainly got the collector vibe. I promised the fella that I wouldn't buy any more minis this month, but I still keep watching eBay daily and twitching and feigning for more pieces of plastic. (I did order two boosters of ATG since they were cheap at B&N and a friend had a coupon I thiefed.)
My original plan was 4 of each common, 2 of each uncommon, 1 of each rare.
I've got so many plate-wearing-sword-wielding humanoids, I could swim in them.
My current collection strategy is 4/2 of each non-PC type and 2/1 of each PC type. Rares are all one each unless I think I need more (like three Vrocks).
