| Some brainstorming over the past few days made me question something: if you know the stats of pieces, do you really want to make an All-Star set? I love the idea of the all-stars. It reminds me of the 'base sets' for Magic in how they've done the past few, allowing internet Magic:TG fans vote on certain inclusions - though, the current All-Stars is definatly a lot of heavy hitters, too many for a base-set inclusion.
If you know the stats ahead of time, do you really want to still vote for All-Stars? Are you afraid like me that too many 'broken' pieces will just be perpetual in Standard (read: Eternal Blade, Warhorse, Wild Mage). I hope the All-Stars are a one-time thing to throw veterans a bone for the transition and the process is NOT renewed.
Thoughts, concerns? | | | |

| I think it's a great idea to have different All Star sets. I like the idea that there will always be a few vintage pieces mixed in with the rotating Standard sets. But, I'm not sure I like how WotC handled the determination of the first All Star set. (Then again, they were operating under different assumptions than they will be next time.)
I think that if they constrain what's in the All Star set (and there are many different ways they might do this), that it can be made to work, without being a set full of broken, dominating pieces.

| What about randomly selecting a past-set to be included in the Standard format? (or voting, etc)
Instead of choosing 60 minis from across the board, perhaps they just include an entire set as the 'All-Stars'?

| I think the all-stars set should change nex summer to a different set of 60 (possibly with some overlap) and then, in 2010, no more. Then, they have open voting to reprint certain pieces once a year.

| | I like the idea of more allstars to throw in for standard, however I think everyone will vote good pieces, and the all-stars will becoe 60 T1 vintage stuff, and it'll throw off the standard meta. | | SoCal Colluder | |

| | I like the idea of there always being an All-Star set. WotC would have to limit the voting to figures that weren't in the previous set though I think, and that's not hard to do. Though I'd assume that figures like Rikka, Drizzt, and Thrall would always be auto-includes. | | Vindicated Champion of a Shadow Mastiff!! | I think they cause enough complications that the process does need to be looked at. Be completly different ball game next time around.
An all star set does seems easiest to mange the stats vs expecatations issues.
Seeing stats will heavily weigh the performers over the duds, which may or may not be bad. In theory we should know most if not all stats of the next allstars, and there wont be any restatting to snark over. Possibly even make them really 'stars'. And the newer peices will still be weighted on the good end of the scale, so the percieved disadvantage of some players having prior comminment to the game (or the money) will be less perhaps.

I dont mind the champ minis always being an auto include, but happily see drizzt fade away unless he gets votes. Which he should being such a fan piece. | | "Mutton yesterday, mutton today, and blimey, if it don't look like mutton again tomorrer." | Not having playable figs for 2.0 just makes me angry, since at FLGS no one plays 1.0 anymore. We have new guys who have no 1.0 figs. having 2.0 figs for all my old figs makes me feel like they're not just neat little pieces of plastic. With work and school, I hafta plan ahead to do D&D game Day, which I love, but really is the only time I get to play. | | Waiting for Chainmail Equivalencies since 2005

| I hope that with the next All-Star set, they'll use an actual set distribution (or something close to it) by requiring X commons, Y uncommons, and Z rares. This way, none of this overloading of high-cost titans and rares.
I also hope Rikka and Thrall are permanent All-Stars, being designed by previous champs.

I like both of these ideas.

| Wait....What?
I keep re-reading this thread and I think I missed the announcement. When did they say that there's would be new All Stars coming out?
Also by next year wouldn't they have Re-Stated back to Underdark or so, so wouldn't a "new" All Stars set be limited to Harbinger-Aberrations or something? Doesn't that seem a bit TOO limited? I'm all for it, but isn't the restating what will re-introduce old pieces into the competitive scene? Sorry if I'm off script...I can't tell if this is a flight of fancy or someone out there actually has heard they're not doing the restats/decided to do just another "All Star" set. -Jared

| There is going to be two types of DDM competive play; - The standard, which will include the sets for one years + all stars. - Vintage, which will be all sets that have been restatted or made for ddm 2.
The wording along with the annocument made it seem very likley that the all stars might be 60 pieces that keep getting voted or selected. That is that the standard competion with always be one year sets plus all stars, with the all stars changing.
Its not about ditching the currently planned restats.
It does seem likley to me that as everything else gets rotated out of play, that that the current all stars will do.
Being a way away, it may never get to a second vote or orginal intention. | | "Mutton yesterday, mutton today, and blimey, if it don't look like mutton again tomorrer."
