Greetings folks. The question has been raised a few times about my general assertition about scaling of prices between EBAY and the Price Guide. Well until recently there was no easily acessible listing of EBAY pricing. A gentleman on the WotC boards - KAGE - has undertaken to compile such data. Here is what I found using the data KAGE had tabulated for the first 5 sets. I compared it to the price guide data from the same timeframe in general. (The EBAY data was collected over the span of many weeks, so it is not a "snapshot" but almost a moving average, and I have no insight into how robust or accurate the number are, but I am willing to accept them as a valid reference list for this exercise.) When comparing the total pricing for all 332 minis from the first 5 sets we find <br> EBAY %<br> EBAY Madda of madda<br>5 Set $2,234 $3,703 60%<br> When comparing the total prices of the three rarity grades on average against each other we see. `EBAY % EBAY Madda of madda Commons $86 $192 45% Rares $1,853 $3,033 61% Unc $295 $477 62%` What this shows is that the average prices for Rares and Uncommons fall into the range I have generally cited of close to 2/3 of guide prices, however the prices of commons turns out to be much lower on average. How about by Set `EBAY % EBAY Madda of madda HARBINGER $709 $1,085 65% DRAGONEYE $293 $526 56% ARCHFIENDS $542 $973 56% GIANTS of LEG $492 $753 65% ABERRATIONS $197 $364 54%` Some of those sets are dragged down by having lots of relatively worthless commons. 5 of the lowest 7 rated commons all come from the Aberrations Set. This is not surprising since most buyers do not have perfect knowledge of the market. Hopefully this comparitive exercise will address the questions that were raised. In this example the EBAY numbers are just the sum of the individual prices. Good information. There is no doubt ebay is much cheaper in general. I'd like to see the original post. Do you have a link ? When extending my tool to include ebay price harvesting I encountered many problems with excessive shipment costs to offset cheap miniature prices. Taking this into account can be daunting work. I'm considering adding some well known ebay shops (Auggie's shop for example) to the list. (No auctions, only buy now prices). This will no doubt give more accurate price estimation for in production minis.

A few comments: 1) Thanks for all the hard work, Zenako. I did a bit of the same analysis (as we discussed), but I didn't have the time to go through the extreme efforts you did. Your dedication to the community is amazing. 2) The 'by set' prices on Ebay have consistently been around 60% (with a deviation around 4%) of the store prices in the price guide. If you're looking to buy by the set, the comparison between Ebay and store prices tends to be pretty reliable. This may be due, in part, to stores being one of the major purchasers of sets (which they then sell as singles). 3) I have been spot checking the Ebay/Price Guide comparison for singles for over a year. The results above are fairly representative of differences you'll be likely to find at any given point. However, as they are a snapshot of Ebay and OPG listed prices, they don't capture the dynamics of the situation. Ebay prices hop around like mad. Figures adopt an average Ebay price after release, but there are huge aberrations on either side fo that average. Whether you decide to include these outliers or not, you'll discover that the average Ebay price of the figures do not remain consistent. They rise and fall over time, often quite unpredictably. As evidenced by the Warbound Impaler, a figure can be almost worthless one month and then climb to the middle of the value range for a set within a few months. Whether these variations are reflections of actual market value changing rapidly or are merely aberrations is something that you'll have to consider for yourself. 4.) If you truly care about the market value of figures in a trade, the best thing to do is consider both the OPG and Ebay average sale prices. These are both measures that can provide some insight into the value of pieces, and both have strengths and weaknesses that are best when blended with the other. By considering both, you get a better picture. However, this is a lot of work... and it may not be worth the time you devote to save yourself a couple dollars worth of figure value in a trade. I strongly advise people to worry less about market value and more about personal value when making trades. Both parties should understand the relative market values of the pieces involved, but not making a trade that would make both people happy because the dollar figure value of the minis on one side is $65 and the dollar value of figures ont he other side is $63 is silly (IMHO).

The lessons learned in my opinion are: 1) There is a pretty consistent relative value ratio between the pricing schemes. 55-65% pretty much covers the range 2) There is a large volitility on EBAY due to often much smaller sample size (plus the uncertainty of shipping costs in the average) so it REALLY pays to shop around if you are looking for a specific mini or two. 3) The best place to pick cheap commons is EBAY, even with shipping you will almost certainly save money. 4) EBAY sales are often not just single minis so the savings can be even more, IF you are in the right place at the right time, whereas the stores have the minis at a ~fixed price 24/7 available for purchase whenever you want them. That alone merits some of the price premimum. 5) No single source determines the value of a mini to someone. I would guess that I would be lucky to get most of my trades within about 10% value of each other on a side. So on a $200 trade, getting boths sides within $20 of each other was probably as much fine tuning as I used. Slavish devotion to "pennies" was and is foolish and using the info in ways that exceed its precision. (As a scientist I have a huge appreciation for using data within the limits of the significant digits. Just because that Instron Tensile Tester gives 6 digit readout on load, does not mean I should care at all about anything past the first 3 digits. The rest are meaningless system noise. (If those extra digits make a difference in pass/fail, then we have the wrong materials in the first place!!) 6) Based on the snapshot of data that KAGE collected and posted on WotC thread, I am going to revising downward slightly the ratio of 2/3 that I used to cite frequently to something closer to 60% on average over the range of sets. 7) My feelings are any changes in the EBAY data would probably offset other changes, that the overall answer remains about the same. Individual minis WILL change dramtically depending on which window of time you gather the data from, but that the population tendancies transcend the fluctuation of single minis. Zenako

i've been super busy so I havn't been able to finnish the final sets. i'm hoping to do that this weekend. I thought about coding it, but I only know VB, and with all the unknowns is could be a bigger job then doing it manually. once i've completed the lists, I will start adding high's lows, ect. and trying to update each set once a month. nice comparison Zenako.

Before adjusting down the percentage to expect from pieces, you may want to do another comparison after Madda's next Update. Paizo has drastically altered many of their prices since the Iuz saw the thread I started on the $35.00 Ambush Drake and the next price guide should show a significant change. The aforementioned Drake is now $14.00.

KAGE my programming expertise sucks, which is why I used to collect all the store data manually. Madda here developed the code to collect the data which is why I have gladly turned the price guide collection title over to him at this point. I know how much of a pain it would be to parse the data from the EBAY auctions. The the auctions where only a single model of a mini (with perhaps mutiples copies) is being sold is only a fraction of the auctions where you can get the mini. Do you count the ones selling 1 of each common from a set and devide by 12(or 16 or whatever as appropriate) and allocate the $4.08 evenly, or do you ignore the auction. Those types of questions are non-stop so I really do appreciate the effort required. I used to track EBAY sale prices of just the Rares back when we only had two sets (Herb, DragonEye), and that was a bit of a pain back then. As for the shifts in prices by a store. Happens all the time. And by large magnitudes like you just mentioned. Those shifts get smoothed out when averaging the data over a dozen plus stores, especially when the mini is still fairly available. The real outliers stick out when only a couple of sites have a mini available and the high price is not tempered as much. (Example using the Drake as a case in point: Prices in my last data collection 8.99 $8.95 8.99 9.95 $8.00 6.99 $10.00 $12.00 $8.99 9.99 9.49 $4.99 Average $8.94 Median $8.99 Now drop in one $35 instead of the $10 for example and the average changes a bit, but probably not enough for anyone to notice as being a big issue. Average $11.03 Median $8.99 So the influence of one outlier on the overall pricing is very minor, in absolute terms, which is also why I believe that changes in individual minis will have minor affects on the overall values. Population averages when gathered from a large enough sample base tend to change very slowly.

One more thing, I have a framework for ebay price mining, but it's not as robust since I don't run it daily or check it at all these days. It can be revived. The major problem is the fact that the sales history is very short (at least when I login) and provides a very little sample if any. Other problems are multiple quantities sales (which the script should analyze but it's not tested) and greatly varying shipping rates. One can argue that shipment cost should matter for online shops as well, but it's less frequent to put high shipment costs and low miniatures costs in shops.

Guys, Since I already have an ebay tool, I let it ran tonight (it takes forever to do all the queries). I'm using my own user when signing in ebay so the history is very limited (I have a simple account). The format is very similar to the auto price list format (they use the same tool). Instead of number of shops, the list shows number of transactions. Edit: The data was removed as there's a newer summary below. A few more notes : * Only automated tests were done. I didn't validate any of the data. * The search pattern for the advance search is: D&D . So missing transactions are possible. * When having the phrase "x10" or "X 4", or simply "[xX] " (as regular expression) the code divides the price by that number to get the price of a single. This counts however as one deal. The search is for completed transactions only, and includes BIN items. * Shipment cost is not included in the price. Hope this helps.

On a quick scan over it, I did not spot anything that looked too broken as far as prices. Unless you upgrade accounts you are limited to about a 2 week window of completed sales. Does your code limit the completed auctions to certain keywords in the auction title? Or does it just mine the whole world of completed auctions? I come across a few auctions with only the mini name, such as Umber Hulk, in the listing and there is nothing about D&D, or Harbinger, or Miniatures in the title. This may be too small a subset to worry about, but they are out there. I also agree that EBAY shipping is much more variable and generally expensive than store shipping on a per mini basis. Most EBAY sellers are looking to recoup all ther fees in the shipping and "handling" charge that they levy. This is usually offset by lower auction prices in the first place which in my mind accounts for a portion of the price delta that is observed. I will take your recent data and see how it compares to the stuff KAGE had compiled and see how consistent the numbers are from period to period. Thanks. There is a small fraction of us DDM'ers who enjoy this sort of number analysis and trend plotting...while many others enjoy the fruits of our obsessions...
