It is very safe to trade here. Unfortunatly there are a couple of bad apples. That is why we have a disputed trades list. It is always best to check here to see who has a disputed trade.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask Lab Monkey or myself. Oopps forgot about Zenko. 
As you are a new member you'll be asked to send first. New members always do until you have a few trades under your belt.
Don't be afraid to trade, there are many many reliable traders on this site.

There is alot of distrust and genuine underhandedness it seems with trades according to certain post. So who should I trade with. How about a list of guarenteed traders. Is that possible? Otherwise I am better off just waiting until a major convention and trading face to face. Sure is safer than some random name associated with some random address. Oh and I have to send first which guarentees that if the other individual is a thief that I will never see any compensation. Your asking alot given the way things look. There really is no list of guaranteed/safe traders. The best you can do however is to check their references. Links are provided. If not, check their completed trades at the system. The more references and completed trades, the better.
If you trade without checking your partner's background, then it's like you're having sex without a condom. That would be stupid and irresponsible. It doesn't have to be by faith as you say.Â
Sending first is really a major turn off. But everyone new has to go through it if they ever want to get established. And to get established is to have a dozen trades with reputable partners. I've done it when I started. And it was harder for me then because nobody at the time wanted to trade internationally with Filipinos (due to a certain scammer named Thayil/Datapwat). But I went through it nonetheless. And I made sure I picked my partners to minimize the risk. I chose those who have been members for at least a year, had a good standing, had 25+ completed trades, and generally had a good rep to lose if they tried to scam people. So obviously, don't send first to someone who's also new to Maxminis or only has a few trades to his name. That's just too risky unless someone reputable can back him or her up.
Yes, it isn't 100% full proof (i.e. CG). But that's why it's important to pick your partners to minimize the risk. If you smell something fishy, then don't trade. Find somebody else. It takes some patience and work to get your self as an established trader.  Anywhere. Not just in Maxminis.Â
The point of this thread is to help warn people of problematic traders. It may look ugly, but it serves a purpose. If it turns you off trading here, remember that the bad apples are only a few handful compared to the hundreds that are good and reliable.   In fact, it's just about the same with any responsible trading community (Wizards, Hordelings, etc.) There will always be bad apples.  But there will be scores more of traders you can trust. That's why it's kinda silly to just dismiss trading here all because of what you've read.
Once you've gotten yourself established, then and only then will you really appreciate why sending first is important. Because now you can protect yourself from potential scammers (like Varez).
I wouldn't have completed 160+ international trades if not for the good folks of Maxminis.  And in case you are wondering, I had to send first at least 14 times when I started. Thankfully, I've only been scammed twice. One of them hurt bad, but nowhere near enough for me to quit trading at Maxminis. No, the payoff of being an active Maxminis trader is still way, way, more advantageous.

If your saying don't trade with anyone without at least 25 completed positive trades then fine. It seems more to me like you saying pre-emptively complete background checks on possible trade partners. I just don't have the time and energy for that. For now I think I will just buy what I want off ebay then get rid of what I don't need at either the local shop or at origins/gencon. Again thanks to those who have tried unsucessfully to disuade me. | | | |

I merely tried to defend Maxminis from your earlier statement that it isn't safe to trade here. That says it isn't safe to trade with me, since I'm part of the Maxminis community.
Ultimately, it is really up to you (individual) to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of trading online. If you think the risk is too great than just simply buying from ebay (which isn't really entirely safe) and trading locally, then do the latter. Heck, I'll do the same if those opportunities were open to me.
But for those (like myself) who don't have a large local DDM community, can't take advantage of ebay (due to local import taxes, inability to access bidpay, etc.), or isn't wealthy enough, trading online is the next best thing. You don't spend on anything except postage fees. To date, I've probably already earned at least $500 net from trading abroad, selling here, and still get enough for my rpg needs. Of course it took a lot of work, time, and god knows how many hours of lurking in the trade threads. But I wouldn't be able to achieve that if I relied on local trades and ebay. That's just something to consider. There may be risks involved, but you may actually end up spending less or not at all.
I respect your decision. It's really none of my business whatever you decide. But it is my business when you make a nasty generalization about the Maxminis trading community based on a few bad traders. | |

As an outsider who first reads this entire thread it would appear that there are some trade difficiencies in the system. While I know there is no perfect way of trading short of face to face I was just seeking to gain some other opinions about trades here. If I hear from enough people that its worth the risk then I would certainly take trading under advisment. As for your comment kritter,If I was out to "flame the whole community" I wouldn't have taken the time to single out this thread under the dispued trade thread alone. I would have put my statements on the main board so please allow me some latitude. I think this is a nice site with good gaming content and thats all I am really looking for. It's all a matter of perspective really. Surely if you first come to this thread, you'll see that there have been a couple of dozen bad and failed trades here. That may seem like a lot.
But it's really not when you realize how much trading goes on here. There have literally been around 20,000 or more Maxminis trades. If 200 or so of them have gone awry, that's still 99% of the trades that happen here have been good, honest deals.
I've had about 170 transactions through Maxminis and every single one of them has been successful in the end.
This thread is just a measure to protect members from the bad apples. Nothing can provide perfect protection from getting burned, but we do the best we can to identify potential bad traders quickly to minimize the damage.
As always, if you have suggestions for how the system can be improved, please let us know.

You've had problems sending first to long-time established maxminis members who have dozens of trades. You've also encountered a number of trade mishaps and misunderstandings. By now people would assume you'd be more careful and very picky with your trading partners.
And yet you agreed to a simultaneous trade with a problematic trader who has only 1 maxminis trade to his name?

this trade started off bad and has got worse.
i have 3 other successful trades with IB so simu-send was ok, well he waited till he recieved to send, stating money and health issues
when his end arrived, it was not right and he offered to send replacements. that was on aug 26 and he has stopped answering emails. so i was forced to come here.
i can report that not only did Ironfist make good on this trade he also gave me a bunch of unexpected extras
so please remove Ironfist Boulderbender from the naughty list
